Tube floating: Nolichucky Gorge Campground offers equipment for river activities. "The water levels are perfect for floating around and playing in the river. There's even a little path you can take a tube up and float back down. They had a lily pad for general use and a little pond if you wanted something contained," explains Kara P.
Appalachian Trail access: USA Raft Adventure Resort provides convenient trail access. "The AT meanders along the River and is easily accessible from the campground," mentions Shelly S., who also noted they "whitewater rafted, the guides were excellent and it was an awesome trip."

River views: Riverpark Campground offers premium riverside sites. "The riverfront spaces are amazing and just inches away from the Nolichucky River. If you love to fish or kayak this is a great location," says Carissa D.
Private wooded sites: Woodsmoke Campground features secluded camping spots. "Quiet, wooded sites with full RV hook up. Nice large sites and private. This is a privately ran campground. Also has tent sites available," explains Matt F.
Temperature relief: Rock Creek Recreation Area provides cooler temperatures than surrounding areas. "We stayed in campsite #31. It's more than partially shaded. The temperature is cooler than in Erwin," notes Josh G.
Water recreation: Nolichucky Gorge Campground offers multiple water features. "At first I was a little panicked that it was going to be a campground that jammed in too many people and we'd have no privacy. It was surprisingly quiet and we had plenty of space. We stayed in the tent spots along the river," shares Kara P.
What you should know
Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds have strict policies while others are more relaxed. At Woodsmoke Campground, "No late check-in available. Not accommodating... super discouraged. We were looking forward to making the best out of unexpected short getaway. Had site available, but no budge on later check in," reports Brooks T.
Seasonal differences: Camping areas experience significant temperature fluctuations between seasons. "Wind your way up the mountains to this sweet state park! There was only one other couple camping when we arrived but I feel like this place wouldn't feel busy even if it was thanks to all the trees! We also felt super safe thanks to the park ranger driving around on patrol," describes Sarah C. about Roan Mountain State Park Campground.
Water access challenges: Not all riverside sites provide direct water access. "Our site was beautiful and overlooked the lake, but you couldn't get to the water from our site, there was about a 6 ft cliff so for kayaking you have to go down the road from the campground and pay $2.00 for a day pass," notes Catherine F. about Cardens Bluff Campground.
Noise levels: Campgrounds near the river can get louder than expected. "The campground was very close with people playing music every night until 1 am and it started about 7 am. People partying all night and loud. I turned my air to 60 so it would run and drown out the noise," warns David J. about Nolichucky Gorge Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Look for playground access: Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park Campground has family-friendly amenities. "The camp grounds run right up against the river which makes for a nice view and are well kept. Haven't been able to check out the new pool renovations yet but I hear from good friends it's pretty nice. Playground is great and was perfect for our girl scout trip," shares Rebecca M.
Consider tent-only areas: Some campgrounds offer separate zones for quiet family camping. "My teen daughter and I had a last minute midweek opportunity to go tent camping and they were so accommodating and friendly here. Beautiful riverfront grassy tent sites are serene and peaceful," says Laura E. about Nolichucky Gorge Campground.
Check bathroom facilities: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds. "The bathhouse was exceptionally nice and there was also laundry and wifi available," reports Gregg G. about Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park.
Ask about water safety: River sites may have challenging currents. "This is a small quaint Campground just off of I-26 near Erwin Tennessee right on the nolichucky river and off of the beaten path," notes Andrew W. about Nolichucky Gorge Campground, while USA Raft Adventure Resort offers more organized water activities with "guides [who] were excellent."
Tips from RVers
Check site sizes: Many campgrounds have limited space for larger RVs. "Tight turns, but manageable with our 40' Fifth Wheel. Relatively level parking. Spacious sites. 20-30-50 amp hookups available. No water on sites but available not far away, with plenty of extra hose, for refilling water tank," advises Robert L. about Rock Creek Recreation Area.
Water access planning: Most campgrounds require planning for water hookups. "If you can grab a spot by the little creek, I would. I was there during a pretty busy time but the noise was surprisingly not a problem," suggests Alisha M. about Roan Mountain State Park.
Consider cell reception: Connectivity varies by location. "Our loop was very private and shaded. The only negative point was the street light right across from us. It was pretty bright at night. Our campsite had a picnic table, a fire pit, a water spigot and electricity," shares Katrin M. about her experience at Roan Mountain State Park.
Look for full hookup options: Riverpark Campground offers complete amenities. "What a surprise. Small campground on the river. Very quiet while we were there. The owners and hosts were sooo nice. Bathrooms remodeled and clean. We didn't do river view but will definitely do it next time," reports Sandy G.
