Several tent campgrounds can be found within a 30-minute drive of Buchanan, Tennessee, primarily in the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Ginger Bay Basic Camping Area offers primitive tent camping directly on the water, requiring a dispersed camping permit. Forest Service Rd 343 provides secluded lakeside tent sites with established fire pits. Both locations are popular with campers seeking quieter alternatives to developed campgrounds while still maintaining water access.

Access roads to primitive tent sites vary considerably, with several requiring high-clearance vehicles. The gravel road to Ginger Bay has steep sections and deep ruts that make four-wheel drive vehicles necessary, especially after rainfall. Most tent campgrounds in the area lack amenities such as potable water, showers or flush toilets. Campers must pack in all supplies, including drinking water, and pack out all trash. Tent sites typically feature flat, cleared areas with established fire rings, though picnic tables are uncommon at primitive locations. Fires are permitted at most sites, but campers should bring their own firewood.

Tent campers at these locations enjoy direct lakefront access for swimming and fishing. Dispersed tent sites provide significantly more privacy than developed campgrounds, with many campers reporting having entire areas to themselves during weekday visits. The gravel tent pads at Ginger Bay accommodate multiple tents with ample space between neighboring sites. Walk-in tent areas allow for more secluded camping experiences away from vehicle traffic. A camper noted that Ginger Bay offers "great place for backcountry though you can drive right to the spot. We were able to setup 4 tents with lots of room to spare. We fished, we hiked, we kayaked! We all enjoyed the peaceful exclusivity this site offers."

      Tanglewood Campground & RV Resort

This was our first stay in our new camper. It was nice to just pull through our spot. Hookups were accessible and worked perfectly. Stayed for four nights over Halloween weekend. They had a little golf cart parade and other activities for the kids. People were nice and respectful of space. The campground was well taken care of. Bathrooms and showers were clean and they even had a laundry room. If we make it back that way, we’ll definitely be staying here again!

      Ginger Bay Basic Camping Area

Good remote site with clear areas

The area is free if you have the LBL backcountry dispersed camping permit. The road down is rough, so there aren't many people going there. I wouldn't recommend it for larger RV's. I camped with a 2dr Jeep and 4x8 camping trailer (offroad). The only amenities are bear-proof trash bins on the South end. The bay is large and there are places you can launch a kayak or canoe.

      Hurricane Creek

Campground hosts were fabulous, but the core part of it. The people at the core were very belligerent didn't want to help out. The roads were really narrow. Big ditches couldn't get into the sights that they said you could the real some of the sites are deep, but the roads are so narrow, you can't cut your vehicle into it. A lot of problems with that out here at this place

Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground

Nice campground with wooded area. Had a full hook up and pull through site since we were only here for one night. Facilities and showers very clean as is the entire place. Camp office and store are lovely and staff are exceptional. Easy to reserve by calling at last minute. Site was a bit tight on the side of a hill for trailer and truck but we did ok.

      Redd Hollow

      Will come again

Started at Gatlin Point. Moved because wanted something closer to the water.

Spacious spots give plenty of privacy. Was very quiet (12th). Facilities clean.

T-Mobile sometimes spotty but had coverage most of the time.

      Pisgah Point - DFWR

      Pretty, but Surprisingly Busy

We chose this spot to camp because it seemed out of the way and was hopefully quiet. We're not sure whether it was the beauty of the spot or the time of the year (Thursday before Columbus Day/fall break), but this spot was so busy!! We arrived early afternoon and there was someone driving in (most left again) every 10 minutes for the entire day!! Not the peaceful spot we were hoping for. We intended to stay a second night, but it was just too busy for us. Not a repeat site for us unfortunately.

We set up camp on the east side near the woods. It was a little challenging to find a flat area. The vault toilet was central to the area. We saw several large birds catching fish in the lake, so there must be decent fishing. There was a picnic table or two on the west side of the area and several fire pits (only one on the east side where we were). The 2 mile gravel road leading to Pisgah Point was pretty rough and washed out at points.

Cub Lake Campground #2 — Natchez Trace State Park

      Wonderful overnight spot

Beautiful camp area. The tent camp loop was closed so I stayed in the full hook up area. Did not need electricity or water but the great washroom had flush toilets and showers. Very clean. Camp host was wonderful. It says it’s just off I40 but the camping area was more like 7 or 8 miles in. Perfect for no road noise. The lake is wonderful. Great walking around the area.

    Guide to Buchanan

Dispersed camping opportunities extend throughout Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area with several sites within 25 miles of Buchanan, Tennessee. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley form the primary water features, with shoreline elevations ranging from 350-400 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-95°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons offer milder 60-75°F daytime temperatures with cooler nights.

    What to do

Kayaking from campsite to lake: Forest Service Rd 343 provides direct lake access for paddling. "The site is right on the lake... I was able to swim and had a great night to myself!" notes Andrew C., highlighting the convenient water entry points for kayaks and canoes.

Wildlife observation: Gatlin Point Self-Service Campground offers encounters with local wildlife. The campground sits on a peninsula with water views from multiple angles, making it ideal for wildlife spotting. "Beautiful, right by a little lake, super quiet and clean," mentions Marcella about the location.

ATV trail access: Primitive campers can reach extensive trail networks. "Bring your atv, dirt bike or sidexside and cruise the trails right along Lake Barkley. They have over 100 miles of trails," explains Chris O., describing the recreation options beyond just camping.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: At Ginger Bay Basic Camping Area, the layout provides natural separation. "Right on the water with a gravel opening beside it... with lots of room to spare," notes Juli G., describing the generous site dimensions that allow for privacy.

Solitude on weekdays: Most dispersed sites remain uncrowded Monday through Thursday. "No other people for 2 days!" reports a camper about their experience at a lakeside site, reinforcing how midweek visits often result in having entire areas to yourself.

Direct waterfront access: Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area Redd Hollow Campground offers prime water views. "Approx 30 sites. Sites are gravel and pretty level. At least half of the sites have a view of the lake," describes Randy S., explaining the campground layout.

    What you should know

Road conditions vary seasonally: Many access roads deteriorate after rainfall. "The road coming in is a little washed out but not too pitted. I'd recommend AWD/4WD and 8+ inches of clearance, especially if it has rained because it's pretty steep in sections," explains Tobias R. about Forest Service Rd 343.

Limited cell service: Most primitive sites have no reliable signal. "Remote is totally worth it... no cell access," notes one camper about Ginger Bay, emphasizing the disconnect from technology.

Permit requirements: Dispersed camping requires permits purchased at visitor centers. "Dispersed camping is a $10 fee. If you have the National Park pass you can go to a self check in campground for $5," explains Darryl H., detailing the current fee structure.

Water availability: No potable water exists at most primitive sites. "No water available in the campground so definitely bring your own!" warns a camper, highlighting the necessity of bringing sufficient drinking water.

    Tips for camping with families

Explore historical foundations: Jones Creek area contains remnants of old structures. "Check out what's left of the old foundations while your there," suggests Tim D., pointing out educational opportunities for children to learn about local history.

Playground access: Some day-use areas near primitive campsites have play equipment. "There are reservable pavilions, a playground and volleyball court and plenty of lake front to fish on," describes Shelly S. about nearby recreation facilities.

Swimming options: Multiple spots offer kid-friendly water access. "We fished, we hiked, we kayaked! We all enjoyed the peaceful exclusivity this site offers," shares Brittni F., highlighting the variety of water activities available directly from campsites.

Forest exploration: Santa's Woods provides wooded settings ideal for family discovery. "Santa's Woods is full of large trees and trails, he welcomes you to find the spot that calls to you for your camping adventure," describes a reviewer about the family-friendly forest environment.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Most primitive sites require additional leveling equipment. "Sites are gravel and pretty level," mentions Randy S. about Redd Hollow, one of the more RV-friendly options in the region compared to most primitive sites.

Access road reconnaissance: Scout roads before bringing trailers or RVs. "I don't recommend a pull behind trailer as the road is so rough you wont get a camper up it," cautions a camper about Ginger Bay's access road.

Smaller rigs only: Most dispersed sites accommodate vans or small trailers only. "We were looking for a place to park our van with a view where our dog could run... and this was perfect," explains Michelle T., confirming that compact rigs work best at these sites.
