Forest Service Road 343 provides free dispersed camping along a rough gravel route that demands attention from drivers. The final descent drops steeply on loose gravel with an 18-inch washout at the bottom, making this a challenging approach for towed rigs. Campers need a dispersed camping pass and should expect ranger patrols.
The main lakeside site offers direct water access and surprisingly decent cell service, with the north-facing shoreline working well for satellite internet. Rayzor R. notes "Wildlife-wise, raccoons and coyotes are regulars," so food storage matters here. Turkey Bay OHV Area sits across the bay, though noise from the off-road vehicles rarely carries to camp. The site gets regular traffic from other campers, dirt bikers, and horseback riders using the area's network of trails.
Multiple camping spots exist along the road, though the waterfront location fills first. The area has ongoing maintenance issues, with broken glass scattered around tent areas and construction debris creating nail hazards near old fire rings. Human waste problems persist on the hillside above the main camp, making a portable toilet system worthwhile. Those exploring the broader region can find campgrounds around Land Between the Lakes Other for different camping experiences.
Pack out all waste and arrive prepared for primitive conditions on this popular but challenging dispersed site.
