Best Campgrounds in South Dakota

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping and The Wall Boondocking Dispersed provide free camping options in South Dakota, with both located near Badlands National Park. South Dakota campgrounds range from primitive dispersed sites on public lands to fully developed private campgrounds with cabin rentals and RV hookups. Several established campgrounds in the Badlands region offer toilets and picnic tables at free or low-cost sites, while campgrounds near Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park provide more amenities including electric hookups and shower facilities.

The Black Hills region contains numerous campgrounds with varying amenities and reservation requirements. Cedar Pass Campground in Badlands National Park offers electric hookups and water but prohibits fires, while Sylvan Lake Campground in Custer State Park provides full amenities including showers and firewood. Dispersed camping areas typically have no facilities but allow pets and alcohol. Several campgrounds close seasonally, with most operating between May and October. A camper noted, "This is our third time here and this time there are markers for where to park to camp. The Forest service is managing the area so people cannot park right at the edge of the cliff like in times past."

National grasslands and forest service roads provide numerous opportunities for dispersed camping throughout South Dakota. Campers report particularly scenic experiences at overlooks within Buffalo Gap National Grassland. According to one review, "Beautiful overlook of the Cheyenne River on FS land. Gorgeous colorful landscape. Large turnaround with plenty of room." Established campgrounds in the Mount Rushmore area feature concrete pads, landscaped grounds, and resort amenities like pools and recreation facilities. Private campgrounds often include cabin rentals alongside traditional tent and RV camping options. Seasonal variations affect road conditions, especially for accessing dispersed camping areas, with some requiring high-clearance vehicles after rainfall. Many campgrounds implement fire restrictions during dry periods, particularly in the Badlands region.

    Rafter J Bar Ranch

    Great Park for Everyone

We meet family out here and stayed for a week. It's a great location, close to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, as well as being right on the Mickelson Trail. About 40 minutes to Rapid City so make sure you bring everything with you as the local grocery store is quite expensive.

They have a great park, volleyball and basketball courts, and pool for kids. The spots were nicely spaced with enough trees that each spot had shade. Where we stayed it wasn't very private but there are other RV spots that are more secluded.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, we will be back next year.

    Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping

    Perfect boondocking location but windy

Stayed here for two nights in early July. There are about 100 numbered sites strung for a couple of miles along a long butte ridge with access roads off of Hwy 240 on the North and South ends of the string. We found a good spot for our small trailer and had a great time exploring the Badlands NP. The Northern entrance to the NP is very close and we had a view into part of the park from our site. The sites are also close to Wall which was fun -- Wall Drug is a must-see and the Salty Steak restaurant was tops for dinner.

The only downside was the heavy winds that kicked up at sunset and stayed pretty constant throughout the night. Tent camping will be exciting unless you can find a spot lower on the ridge. Highly recommend.

We were on a road trip and found this spot along our route- it worked well for a quick overnight stay and shower before exploring Mount Rushmore and Black Hills. Host was super communicative and helpful.

    Badlands Hotel & Campground

    Unfortunately Disappointed

We booked online and received a confirmation at the same time we got an email notice that they did not have availability. We were several days out from arriving so we called to inquire as to whether we had a reservation or not. We were assured we did. Upon arrival, we were told there was nothing in the system. Then they rather unkindly scrambled to get us a partial group of days for what we’d reserved. In the meantime my wife, thinking we didn’t have a spot, booked alternate days in another place for the back of the reservation. So when I requested a modification of what they eventually offered us, they refused a “refund” of the final day of the reservation they’d messed up in the first place. Wow. Pretty poor customer service out here in the middle of nowhere and where the property actually doesn’t look much like their online pictures in the first place. Not inviting physically or warm and inviting personally. Guess it lives up to the Badlands reputation. We wanted to like it.

    Memorial Park

    Good stop for the night

Nice spot for my overnight stay. The camp host was nice and polite. There was an add-on fee for phone, online, and apparently in person reservations. I didn't get it but, I payed it, Inwas there and I was tired. I was fortunate enough to score a tent spot very close to the bathrooms and showers, which weren't pristine but were also much better than using a hole in the ground or not showering. My spot was also right on the water. I feel asleep to the sound of water breaking on the rocks. Would definitely stay again in the future.

Whistler Gulch Campground & RV Park

    Nice for the area

We enjoyed our stay. Fair price for FH. Close enough to town and the trolly comes by as well. Sites take some leveling.
