Camping near Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion around Bonneau, South Carolina features several waterfront campgrounds offering access to these popular fishing destinations. Short Stay Navy Outdoor Recreation Area provides waterfront sites with full hookups, though military affiliation is required for access. Other mixed-use campgrounds in the area include Francis Marion National Forest, Angels Landing Campground, and Johnston Landing, all providing various combinations of tent camping, RV sites, and cabin rentals. Most developed campgrounds in the region cater primarily to RV campers and those with boats, reflecting the area's strong fishing culture.
Water access dominates the camping experience in this region, with most campgrounds situated along Lake Marion, Lake Moultrie, or the connecting Diversion Canal. Many sites require advance reservations during peak fishing seasons, and several campgrounds primarily serve longer-term campers. Most developed campgrounds provide full hookups including water, electric, and sewer connections, though amenities vary considerably between locations. Cell service can be inconsistent in more remote areas, especially within Francis Marion National Forest. A visitor noted, "Having difficulty deciding between Lake Marion or Lake Moultrie? Well then, finding a spot here at Hills Landing and RV Park might just allow you to have the best of both worlds as this spot is perfectly situated between the two."
The lakefront campgrounds in this region are primarily designed for fishing enthusiasts, with boat launches, tackle shops, and fishing piers available at many locations. Campers report high satisfaction with waterfront sites, though several mention limited privacy at more developed RV parks. Several visitors highlighted the importance of mosquito repellent when camping near the water in this region. While most campgrounds offer basic amenities like showers and restrooms, their quality varies considerably between locations. A recent review described Rocks Pond Campground as "massive and has immediate access to water for your boat, kayak or canoe," though the reviewer also noted it consists of "seemingly endless barren rows full of slanted parking spots" with limited shade, making it noisy during busy weekends. For those seeking more natural surroundings, Francis Marion National Forest provides more rustic camping options with greater privacy.

Most campers are here to go out shrimping. It’s a beautiful, small campground with level sites, some shade, electric and water hookups and tent sites right along the water. The bathroom could use an update but it was very clean and the shower was roomy and hot enough. A dump station is available. I understand the park will close after shrimp season (mid November..?) for updates. I lucked out on a first come, first serve site for the night. I’d definitely stay here again.
You’ll find this hidden campground VERY far off the beaten trail (and trust me, this trail is as beaten up a road as you’ll find just about anywhere in South Carolina, so you'll want to drive down the lane here SLOW) on the easternmost side of Lake Marion off Ferguson Landing in southeastern part of the great Palmetto State. Given its direct access to Lake Marion, the place gets high marks for its location, but lower marks for overall upkeep and the basic downtrodden nature of the place. You’ll be impressed by the shallow water access and boat launch here, where you’ll have to maneuver around scores of submerged Cypress trees, which makes for quite the enchanting entry to Lake Marion, which if you weren’t aware, offers up 315 miles of shoreline, spans 110,000 square acres or 174 square miles and is the largest lake in South Carolina.
That said, IMHO Taylor’s Landing could use a serious bit of refurbishment and grooming, including the grounds themselves, which were quite overgrown when we stopped by. There is a general store of sorts on-site that sells sundries, ice and most camping needs as well as providing propane tanks for sale. Overall, this place is built more for the RV’ing crowd, although they do offer a few places for tent campers, but don’t offer much in terms of amenities. There was a communal dog area that was pretty worn down right near the area designated for tent camping, which given that most of the dog owners didn’t take their dogs for a walk, the smell emanating from this area was enough for us to decide not to camp here for the night. The entire CG is wide open without any benefit of shade or privacy between sites, although the perimeter has a nice treeline.
Insider’s tip? Here’s a few: (1) If you are a history buff, then you’ll be lured nearby to discover the Sunken Ghost Town of Ferguson, which was once a Congaree Indian Village, which we could access with our kayaks to explore; (2) There is a sandy beachhead that you’ll discover on one of the few trails you’ll come across here at Taylor’s Landing; (3) From an entertainment standpoint, this CG does offer up some interesting creative options during different times of the year – when we were there during the latter part of October, they offered up a ‘Trail of Terror’ for Halloween; (4) If you want to get your hike on, right nearby is Santee Cooper Nature Trail, which makes for some relative easy-to-modest hiking; (5) There’s nothing out in these parts, so if you want to grab a bite to eat, you’ll need to head back to Eutawville where there’s a few mom & pop joints like Tricia’s Café, Sweatman’s BBQ and Casters at Bells; (6) The fishing dock here is solid and offers great opportunity to reel in largemouth bass, catfish, striped bass, crappie and panfish like bluegill; and (7) The best asset here at Taylor's Landing is the fairly EZ to access boat launch that will have you in Lake Marion in no time flat, whether you have a motorized boat or a simple kayak or canoe.
Overall, Taylor's Landing could be a nice place, just in dire need of some upgrades and overall maintenance.
Happy Camping!
We were traveling with two large dogs and looking for a pet friendly site. This is a people friendly site so many game playing areas swimming pool and clean manicured lawns with a lake view on some sites.
Beautiful site at boat ramp but singns everywhere no camping no overnight
This is a great location, tucked away beautiful serene views and pretty well maintained. Bath house is clean with clean showers. It seems like most of the occupants are long term and everyone including the staff is very friendly. The waters are great for boating, fishing, and swimming. Tons of beautiful birds in this area. The site i got does not have sewage hookup but they can come by and pump out your tanks upon request.
Staff very friendly. Clean bathroom and showers. Farm animals around property and free eggs when available.
We stayed here while attending the Highwater Music Festival. We brought our bikes, but it’s not safe to ride out if the campground to the festival or the beach, so we drove them to a spot outside of the grounds and then ride from there.
So much to do inside this campground and park! It was very busy, but we didn’t feel it was too loud - still plenty of opportunity to enjoy nature.
Check in was easy, folks friendly. Water pressure to RV was weak, not sure we had 50 amp electric voltage, cause our battery level was down to 1/3 in am. It was very hot, ran two AC’s, and have electric fridge. Still trying to figure out why, when plugged into power, our battery level is lower then when we plugged into pole.

Kayaking access points: Short Stay Navy Recreation Area provides multiple lake entry points for smaller watercraft. "The main attraction is huge Lake Moultrie. Great for fishing, swimming, camping, RV, and much more. There is a swimming beach and the camp store has boat kayak rental and propane tank refill," notes Thom C. about Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner.
Hiking the Palmetto Trail: Located approximately 5 miles from Johnston Landing Campground, this trail features sunken cypress trees and bird watching opportunities. "One of the best hikes in all of South Carolina—the Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you'll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching (Ospreys and Herons in particular)," according to a review of Johnston Landing Campground & Cabins.
Wildlife observation: Francis Marion National Forest offers significant wildlife viewing opportunities. "Nature is abundant, both flaura and fauna. So bug spray is recommended to the unfortunate of us that are preyed upon by mosquitoes and the like," advises Caleb from his experience at Francis Marion National Forest.
Proximity to multiple lakes: Hills Landing RV Park sits between both major lakes. A camper described it as "perfectly situated between the two on a tributary of a slow-moving waterway dubbed Diversion Canal that connects the two" and mentioned it's "located about 1.5 hour northwest of Charleston."
Waterfront access: The ability to camp directly on the water appeals to many visitors. "The campsites aren't huge, but you can fish and the scenery is great with the sites right against the lake," says Matthew S. about Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner.
Family-friendly facilities: Santee Lakes KOA provides amenities specifically for families. "Great playground along the shore. If it wasn't near freezing, there was a nice spot for swimming. Ordered pizza and had it delivered to the campsite! Nice touch!" reports Molly F. about Santee Lakes KOA.
Military restrictions: Short Stay Navy Recreation Area limits access to military personnel. "This campground is for Active and retired military and other qualified DOD employees. Very quiet and secure great fishing and beautiful sunsets," explains Alan M. Additionally, another reviewer notes, "Recent changes allow active military to stay maximum of 30 days per year."
Variable site quality: Angels Landing Campground reviews indicate inconsistent camping experiences. "The sites are not all that spacious or private, and the bath house really needed updating. I guess most people use the bathrooms in their RVs, but still, I was a little disappointed," mentions Myron C. about Angels Landing Campground.
