FISHING

Camping at Lake Marion, \*\*the largest lake in South Carolina, \*\*comes with a lot of perks, such as a phenomenal fishing opportunity. Since angling is not just about catching the biggest fish, take the chance to teach your budding fishermen the virtue of patience by the shores of Lake Marion. Some of the fish you’ll likely encounter include striped bass, channel catfish, and black crappie.

BOATING

Should fishing sound interesting, wait until you hear about the boating opportunities. Lake Marion and the neighboring Lake Moultrie are part of a navigable inland channel leading to [Charleston](<https://www.outdoorsy.com/rv-rental/south-carolina/charleston>) from Columbia. If you’re feeling eager to boat down to Charleston, you’ll get to pass through the Pinopolis Dam and Lock, which at 75-foot in height, is the largest single-step lock in North America.

HIKING

While camping in a rental motorhome at Lake Marion, fun isn’t only limited to the water. The low country in South Carolina is relatively flat, so hiking through the countryside is fairly easy. The massive Santee National Wildlife Refuge has a healthy wildlife population consisting of alligators, waterfowl, and the Springflyer Dragonfly. It is also one of the largest wetlands supporting migratory birds in Eastern USA.

HIKING & EATING IN HISTORIC CHARLESTON

The great Historic City of Charleston is very close. Hike the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge - one of Charleston’s most iconic landmarks. After trekking the bridge, head over to downtown Charleston for a culinary delight tour of world-renown restaurants known only to Charleston. After eating to your heart’s content, walk and tour the largest historic district in the country. Tour beautiful historic architecture, gardens and mansions - only in Charleston!

BEACH FUN & MORE

This barrier island is accessible only by boat. Bring your tent and lantern for your stay. No running water, no electricity. The only inhabitants here are the wild Osprey, Heron, Egrets, Goats, Turtles, Mallards, and an abundance of other birds and animals always around the island. Jon boat is included in this primitive camping experience. Tent rentals available. Washrooms and showers included.

Summer stay

Having difficulty deciding between Lake Marion or Lake Moultrie? Well then, finding a spot here at Hills Landing and RV Park might just allow you to have the best of both world’s as this spot is perfectly situation between the two on a tributary of a slow-moving waterway dubbed Diversion Canal that connects the two. Located about 1.5 hour northwest of Charleston, you will find complete respite from the bustling developed world out here in these parts where there’s plenty of hiking, fishing and boating to be had. Here you’ll find newly graded pull-through spots and a very easy paved boat landing to maneuver around, along with a private dock, full-service restaurant(great breakfast, but the lunch/dinner menu is basically glorified bar food w/ burgers and wings) and a general store where they sell bait&amp; tackle, gas, ice, snacks, sundries and all the other basics you would expect. There’s WiFi throughout the campground along with laundry facilities and a complete bath house that was being built up when I was there. The owners, Tony&amp; Stephanie, are really great‘salt of the earth’ type of folks who definitely want to ensure your stay is amazing. Insider’s Tip? Here’s a few recommendations for enjoying yourself while at this property:(1) I would definitely recommend a drive to Charleston where you can visit some of the oldest and most well-preserved plantations in the entire South(along with the amazing culinary treasures you’ll discover);(2) Folly Beach for a slow-moving beach town(complete with a local, family-owned ice cream parlour) and;(3) Monck’s Corner, which is a nice day-trip to experience the amazing Cypress Gardens. My top recommendation? Stay put where you are at and enjoy the best of what Lakes Moultrie and Marion have to offer, especially the superb fishing, wherein you’ll be sure to catch striped bass, channel catfish and Bream– all of which are most excellently served grilled.
