RV parks near Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests range from basic to full-service facilities. Rutledge Lake RV Resort in Fletcher provides full hookup sites with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections for motorhomes and travel trailers. "The site was pretty level and the staff was friendly. The sites are packed in fairly close together but my neighbors were all extremely quiet," noted one visitor about Rutledge Lake. Red Gates RV Park in Hendersonville accommodates big rigs with electric and water hookups on level sites, though it lacks sewer connections at individual sites. Lakewood RV Resort in Flat Rock caters to the 55+ crowd with full hookup sites, operating year-round with concrete pads that simplify leveling for larger motorhomes.

Pull-through RV sites are limited across the region, with most parks featuring back-in configurations that require careful maneuvering. While Wilson's Riverfront RV Park in Asheville offers riverfront settings with full hookups, visitors should note that mountain terrain often means navigating steep access roads to reach some facilities. Cell service varies widely, with stronger signals near Asheville and spotty coverage in more remote areas near the national forests. A reviewer cautioned about one park where "it was easy to get to, but very hard to navigate with our 44' fifth wheel. The website says the sites are 65' long and they are not." Most RV parks maintain sanitary dump stations, with Rutledge Lake and Bear Creek offering on-site dumps for convenience. Pet policies generally allow dogs with standard leash requirements, though weight or breed restrictions may apply at select locations.

      Avery Creek Roadside Camping

We were probably lucky, but we drove in on a Monday and found a nice site with the creek/stream burbling in the background. Yes, there is dirt entrance/road and traffic, but not much and way quieter than family campgrounds. This site is my perfect idea of an amazing free off grid camping spot.

      Ralph J. Andrews Campground

My son, daughter-in-law, and twin grandchildren, and I camped here to watch the full solar eclipse in 2017. We had a beautiful tent site. There was a little playground that the kids really enjoyed and abundant shade at the camping site. Bathrooms were clean, wood for campfires was available, and we had a wonderful time.

Lake Powhatan Glamping — National Forests In North Carolina

This place is a nice campground, quiet and the guests (during our stay) respect others by keeping the noise down. The spaces are set up to maximize privacy between sites. There is no cell phone service (to do this report we are in a picnic area by a small lake and I can get cell as well as internet on my travelfi device) sos is the only access. I normally listen to audio books but not while here. On my computer I could see three others with low signals; they might have had a better device/provider. The spots tend to the small back in typically found in campsites built before RVs got really big, type. There is another camping area I haven’t been to yet and I did see a large over lander (looks indestructible and tall/long) towable head that way and the campground attendant didn’t predict any problems so perhaps there are larger spots elsewhere. This place has single person shower rooms and nice flush toilets. The whole place is set in woodland so it isn’t like a commercial RV place that was more concerned with volume over aesthetics. This is a lovely spot with ample amenities (my space had no hookups) for our type of camping (toilets, trash, quiet neighbors, semi private spaces) just zero phone or internet.

      Winngray Family Campground

      Great family run campground

This campground has a great location in maggie valley, close to Waynesville with plenty to do in close proximity. While it is a traditional campground, they have very competitive rates for weekly and monthly stays. For us its the perfect getaway destination for the summers and fall. The staff is super welcomming and friendly. You find a cute creek on the backside of of the campground with trout as some fisherman told me. The staff takes pride in all the flowers, landscaping and seasonal decorations. Also nice to know is you are not being looked down to with an older camper. As long as your rig is decent and functional you are admitted.

      Spacious Skies Bear Den

Seems to be a well established campground in an off the beaten path location. Roads alternately paved and gravel. The campsite is gravel in a wooded setting. Fair amount of space between sites. The bathhouse is clean but dated.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

Pull off along well used access road

Great spot to pull in last minute. There are multiple spots along this stretch of road. Would not recommend if you want to post up somewhere private, decent amount of traffic pulling through for a mountain road.

Mountain Falls RV Resort, Lake Toxaway, North Carolina

Highest Quality RV Park We’ve Ever Seen!!

This park was built several years ago by Millenium Motorcoach Company, and is just an incredible place! The sites are all privately owned, and rentals are managed by the resort, for the owners and renters alike. We have travelled for many years in our motorcoach, and have enjoyed accommodations like this seldom. You just want to stay and never leave!

    What to do

Tubing adventures: 3.5 miles from camp at Wilderness Cove Campground, visitors can float down the Green River. "Camped at Wilderness Cove in August 2020 for 2 nights. Fishing opportunities: Anglers enjoy both river and lake fishing at various rv parks in National Forests in North Carolina. Easy access to hiking trails and outdoor activities."

Nice sites with and great stream and pond on property to fish, and yes it's easy to catch a fish here! What campers like

Year-round operation: Some RV parks near National Forests in North Carolina remain open through winter. A camper at Lakewood RV Resort shared, "They offer back-in and pull-thru sites. We stayed in site 79 which was very level and convenient to the pool, clubhouse and incredibly clean public restrooms."

Proximity to towns: Many sites offer quick access to amenities. A visitor at Boylston Creek RV Park & Cabins simply stated, "Great spot, friendly people. New," highlighting the convenience of this recently developed option.

Pet-friendly policies: Dog areas and accommodations for pets exist at several campgrounds. One camper noted about Red Gates RV Park, "They even have an off lead dog area with water available and poop bags. Their was a lake on the property to walk around and adds to the beauty of a walk."

    What you should know

Terrain challenges: Mountain campgrounds often have uneven sites. At Hitching Post Campground, a visitor reported, "We were in site D, which was not very level," despite enjoying the location's other features.

Service limitations: Cell reception varies drastically between campgrounds near National Forests in North Carolina. "Internet is a little slow, but you can upgrade for a night for $3," noted one camper at Lakewood RV Resort.

Size constraints: Not all campgrounds accommodate larger RVs. A visitor at Wilderness Cove Campground explained the limitations: "Space is limited," which matters for those with bigger rigs planning to visit.

Weather considerations: Seasonal weather patterns affect mountain campsites. "It was late fall and it was pretty chilly," shared a father who tent camped at Hitching Post Campground, indicating the need for proper gear during cooler months.

    Tips for camping with families

Off-site attractions: Plan day trips to nearby towns and parks. At Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, a visitor mentioned, "Park is ok for overnight stay, if traveling, the best thing about the park was the riverside sites," noting its convenient location for exploring the area.

Multi-use paths: Look for campgrounds with walking trails. "The Greenway bike Trail runs right through it," noted a visitor about Wilson's Riverfront RV Park, making it easy for families to bike without loading equipment.

Playground access: Some campgrounds offer dedicated children's areas. A camper at Hitching Post Campground mentioned, "They have a playground for kids," providing an on-site activity option for younger visitors.

Shared campground amenities: Communal spaces enhance the experience. "There is also a nice big community yard with Adirondack chairs and fire pits," observed a winter visitor at Land of Waterfalls RV Park, describing features beyond individual campsites.

    Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Bring leveling blocks for mountain sites. "The site was pretty level," noted one camper at Rutledge Lake RV Resort, but this isn't true for all campgrounds in the region.

Hookup variations: Check specific site utilities before booking. "Nice sites with picnic tables and fire pits. Open year round. Stayed from November through April," reported a Land of Waterfalls RV Park visitor who enjoyed the extended stay option.

Access road navigation: Research entrance routes before arrival. "Very thorough instructions once you arrive, but the driving instructions can be a little confusing and make getting in sound more complicated than it is," advised a Lakewood RV Resort visitor, suggesting the reality is often simpler than written directions indicate.

Seasonal closures: Office hours affect certain campground features. As one Rutledge Lake visitor noted, "When office closes you can not take boats, or kayaks out. So when you spend day out site seeing and return office is closed. Can not get Ice, wood or boat rentals."
