Best RV Parks & Resorts near Helen, GA

Several RV parks near Helen accommodate various rig sizes with different hookup options. Creekwood Resort in Sautee provides full hookups with water, electric, and sewer connections on sites suitable for RVs and big rigs. River Vista RV Park in Dillard offers 50-amp and 30-amp electrical service, water, and sewer hookups across its three sites, operating year-round. Yonah Mountain Campground features 30/50 amp electrical, water, and sewer at all sites, though the gravel pads can be tight for larger rigs. Willow Valley RV Resort in Rabun Gap maintains 81 sites with full hookups including 50-amp service for larger motorhomes. "Sites are very spacious. Lots of choices. We were lakeside on a pull through that was a bit short for us. The site was amazing," noted one visitor.

Mountain terrain creates navigation challenges for RV travelers approaching some parks. Sharp turns and elevation changes can be problematic for rigs over 40 feet, particularly when accessing dump stations. Cell service varies significantly by location, with some parks reporting excellent coverage while others have minimal reception. Most RV parks in the region remain open year-round, though fall foliage season brings increased occupancy rates. Dump stations are available at most parks, though some visitors report tight maneuvering space when using these facilities. Pet policies differ between properties, with most allowing pets but enforcing leash requirements. One camper noted, "The problem area for larger rigs will likely be the curves before and after the dump station/restrooms (sharp turns plus elevation drop)."

    Tugaloo State Park Campground

    Great Lake

This is a great campground. Lots of spacious campsites. Lots of choices. We were lakeside on a pull through that was a bit short for us. The site was amazing we could kayak up to our site. Pet friendly, family friendly. Power, Electric, gray water dumps near each site. Washer and dryer in each bathhouse. A beautiful campground.

    Shoal Creek Campground

Beautiful lake front AND lake view camping spots; friendly staff

This was our first RV camping experience -- testing out a new pop-up camper during a two (2) night stay. Reservations were made through Campspot -- about $120 with fees. Communication with the main number for the campground went through the Margaritaville Campground nearby. Separate direct lines to the camp office and security were provided after arrival. Overall communication was good with both, and the staff were always polite.

We skipped our first night reservation due to high winds. We had concerns about damaging the pop-up roof during first-time setup. We decided, instead, to visit the campsite we'd reserved and pick up our paperwork. Site 56 was our first choice, and we were NOT happy with it. I selected the wrong size on the Campspot website -- a 20' campsite. It was not big enough to park both the camper AND the tow vehicle, AND the camper would've been facing away from the lake anyway with water and electrical hookups.

The next morning, we called to arrange for a different site. The camp office was very accommodating and blocked off four (4) available sites to choose from. We moved to site 55, which was a large circular pull through. Probably too big for our pop-up camper, but also probably too close to trees for a larger trailer or even a 5th wheel. The campsite was large, with the picnic table, fire ring and sand pit away from the camper. There was lots of room to set up and enjoy the beautiful lake views.

Electric and water hookups worked just fine. The camp office lent a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter free of charge. We had no issues with either service. The showers and bathrooms were about 2-3 sites down and up the road from 55, and they were reasonably clean for what they were.

I WAS disappointed that the main gate was broken, and the key code locks on the showers and bathrooms were duct taped shut. However, I did not feel that the campground was all that insecure, and there did not appear to be a lot of traffic coming through. Security DID come through overnight on Sunday morning -- probably due to some noise at 1-2 of the campsites across the cove from ours. Things quieted down after. The camp host was cleaning bathrooms on Sunday morning, and he was very polite when we talked. I saw him regularly coming through to check on campsites and clean up.

Overall, we liked this campground and will be going back. I will likely request to scout out some different sites in person before selecting one, as I don't want to be in a position to have to give up my spot when it's very busy.

    Shady Grove Campground

    Great lakefront spot

We stayed at site #82 pull through. $30/night. 30' hybrid travel trailer. We will come back here again

    Pros:

    • easy to level trailer
    • excellent lakefront view (many of the sites have lakefront views)
    • private with plenty of tree cover
    • quiet
    • large site area
    • friendly gate person
    • good cell reception with t-mobile
    • clean restrooms
    • good water pressure

    Cons:

    • 30 amp issues on pole with EMS readings. 50 amp was fine
    • steep hill to get to the lake

    Mile Creek County Park

My Favorite Campground in South Carolina

Having lived in South Carolina most my life, I haven't seen it all.. but have seen a lot of it. Mile Creek Campground is a string of 3 islands connect by narrow straights and surrounded by water. It's hard to get a spot here without great views of Lake Keowee and the Blueridge Mountains.

The spaces a are a mix of full concrete pads or gravel sites. We've stayed in several sites and while some are very close together (that RV park feeling), there are many which have lots of breathing room, and things feel more natural. The pics in this review are for site 51, which is on the "3rd island," which is the furthest out and offers the best views. This is a very level concrete spot and we only had to use the electric tongue jack on our trailer to level front to back. Got set up in under 5 minutes.

There is one oddity to some of the concrete sites. Because it's concrete, your fire pit is off to the side. And since most of the sites are raised, your fire pit may be level with the concrete pad, but you can't sit next to it as there is too much slope.

It's a county park and is well maintained. Bath houses are clean. With it having a public day use area with a nice boat dock, you can expect almost every morning @ 6am to hear the diehard fishing folks blasting out of the boat launch area.

We have Verizon and our cell signal has always been 4 to 5 bars on the outside third island.

All sites have 30amp electric and water hookups. Dump station at the front of campground entrance up on a hill. BE AWARE, pulling into the dump station is easy, but the steeper exit will have longer RV's and Trailers dragging their bag end on the asphalt.

We've always felt safe and relaxed here. And though we prefer more dispersed camping with less neighbors, this is still one of the best and most affordable ($25 in off season) places in South Carolina to camp.

We rarely give 5-stars, but due to the awesome views,  trees between the sites and being well wooded & surrounded by water... it really is a very nice place.

From what I can tell, all but two sites are back in. We had no problem backing in our 23'8" (total length) camper in.

    Persimmon Creek RV Park

    Convenient access with comfortable amenities!

Let me start out by saying this was our first campground for our travel trailer.  I don't have a huge point of reference, but I can give you details on everything that was smooth

    • Location - Just off a 4 lane highway.  Convenient with easy access to your site.  Plenty of room to back in to your spot.  There were limited "pull-through" sites.  During the day you can hear highway traffic, but at night that road gets little traffic so it is quiet.
    • The owners are great!  This is a mom & pop operation but you can tell they put their heart into this place.  Both are friendly and accomodating
    • Sites are very spacious.  Our spot was freshly mowed, had a picnic table, fire pit, electric & water hookups.  We had a small stream behind and a pond in front of us.   The site we occupied had trees between our neighbors.  Just enough privacy to not worry if someone was looking in your windows.
    • While I didn't use their public restrooms, my wife said they were VERY VERY clean.  She worked in a hospital for a long time, so if she says they are clean, they are clean.  There were showers available but we did not use them.
    • They have firewood for $5 a bundle.  They encourage you to not bring firewood from other places in order to help prevent bug/disease spread (very common nowadays)
    • Two ponds for fishing.  One was closed till the weather is cooler.  I'm guessing they stock it with trout.
    • LOTS of hiking trails within a short drive.  We visited the Ocoee River and Copper Basin TN.  Easy day trip for hiking, biking, rafting, breweries, restaurants, etc.

We will definitely visit this spot again.  It's about an hour and 15 minutes from our house but feels like we are further.  Very convenient and worth it for $30 per night. $30 was the RV rate, check their website for the most up to date pricing.

    Mile Creek County Park

    A hidden gem!

This campground sets on a peninsula into Lake Keowee and offers gorgeous views of the lake and mountains in the distance.  While possible for big rigs, it can be a challenge in some areas.  The sites are mostly in the 30-35 foot range and most are back in, fairly level and offer 30/20 electric and water.  Picnic tables and fire rings are on the sites, but unfortunately most of the sites do not offer a lot of usable area around the site.  A few sites near the boat ramp are unparalleled in their view of the lake and mountains and reservation planning is a must if these are wanted.  Being far out in the country the cell service isn't so good and according to where you are even over the air TV is spotty.  A nice boat ramp and swimming beach are available, as are bath houses centrally located.  The camp store was closed due to Covid when we stayed, but there are kayak and canoe rentals.  The dump station was easily accessed and very clean. There are cabins, but we did not look at them.  All in all, this is a very nice campground for families or couples wanting a getaway.

    Unicoi State Park & Lodge

Nice camping close to Helen GA

Unicoi State Park is just two miles from Helen GA. It is a convenient location for visiting there, particularly in fall during the town’s Octoberfest. Unicoi is in North Georgia Mountains & includes a campground, cabins, “barrel cabins” and Lodge with a nice lake for fishing and canoeing. There are 51 RV sites with water and electricity that can accommodate 30-foot and 40-foot RVs, 82 tent sites, family tent campsites, walk-in sites and primitive “Squirrel’s Nest” sites. The park has numerous hiking trails in the Chattahoochee National Forest, plus a trail into Helen. Nearby is Anna Ruby Falls, administered by the US Forest Service. Smith Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee River flows from the falls to Unicoi Lake. It is a good trout fishing stream. Other activists include archery and target shooting, fly fishing, paddle boarding, boat rentals, zip lining, mountain biking and a beach.

    Twin Lakes RV Park

A place to park with no bath, no amenities and mostly long term residents

The 5 star reviews are perplexing. We're not new to RVing and have stayed in plenty of lovely mom& pop parks. This is a family owned campground, but it is basically a parking lot with hookups for people who live there long term. Our site was on the side of a road about 50 yards away from the Dump Station. It was referred to as a premium, pull through rather than what it is... a pull to the side of the road. There was no grass or picnic table. I'll post pictures that show the condition of our site and how close the spots are to one another. The pictures online and YouTube videos of this park are very deceiving. The grassy areas beside and between the lakes can only be accessed by walking though other camper's sites.

** Use caution navigating the park because the roads at the back have no way to turn around if you get back there.

Guide to Helen

RV campgrounds near Helen, Georgia range from adults-only retreats to family-friendly destinations. The region sits within the Chattahoochee National Forest at approximately 1,600 feet elevation, creating distinct seasonal camping patterns with fall being the most popular for viewing colorful foliage. Winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing, requiring campers to prepare for colder mountain conditions even when valley temperatures remain moderate.

What to do

Explore local waterfalls: Several campgrounds provide convenient access to North Georgia's notable waterfalls. Visitors staying at River Vista RV Park can easily reach nearby falls, as one camper notes, "There are waterfalls and an old covered bridge in nearby Sky Valley."

Visit historic downtown areas: Many RV parks serve as ideal baselines for exploring charming mountain towns. "We were lucky enough to get a spot overlooking a creek on the property... We loved it so much we stayed an extra day. And we are already planning our trip back!" shares one visitor to Currahee RV Park, located near Toccoa's historic downtown.

Golf at nearby courses: Several RV parks offer proximity to mountain golf courses. "One half mile to beautiful golf course. One mile to clay county park. 3 fishing piers within 4 miles," mentions a visitor about the recreational options near Sundowner RV Village.

What campers like

Adults-only environments: Some RV campgrounds specifically cater to adult campers seeking quieter settings. One guest at Creekwood Resort shares, "Great little campground just minutes from Helen GA. Super clean and quiet, ADULTS ONLY. Full hook ups, bath house and laundry room."

Creek and riverside sites: Many campers prioritize water-adjacent camping spots. "The sites are fairly close together but they do have some options that are more spaced out. There is a large green space in the center of the campground and a small creek accessible from most of the sites," notes a visitor to Riverbend RV Park.

Reliable connectivity: For campers needing to stay connected, certain parks offer dependable internet service. A recent visitor to Creekwood Resort reports, "TMO 5g at home device works, can work remotely off their WiFi," which proves valuable for extended stays or work-from-road setups.

What you should know

Seasonal operating differences: While many RV parks remain open year-round, amenities and services vary by season. "There is an outdoor pool with hot tub, and an indoor heated pool for adults," notes a visitor to River Vista RV Park, highlighting facilities available during warmer months.

Campfire restrictions: Fire policies differ significantly between campgrounds. One camper at River Vista RV Park points out, "There are no fire rings at the campsites. If you need a fire to cook with and didn't bring your own there are a number of grills there that you can use."

WiFi reliability varies: Internet connectivity can be inconsistent even at parks advertising WiFi service. A camper shares their experience: "Very frustrated with the almost non-existent Wifi. Couldn't download much of anything or post anything or watch anything. If you advertise Wifi, it should have much better coverage throughout the campground and inside the RVs."

Tips for camping with families

Look for designated play areas: Some RV campgrounds near Helen offer specific family amenities. At Willow Valley RV Resort, visitors appreciate that "There are many activities to keep family members occupied, including a playground, basketball, corn hole, soccer nets, community fire pit (you can rent a private firepit), and in-season, a pool."

Check age restrictions: Not all campgrounds welcome children. One reviewer notes about Creekwood Resort, "The campground is paved and sites are level. They only have a few sites large enough to handle 38' rigs. They also have a limited number of full hook up sites. It is very close to Helen Ga and convenient to all of the adventures. The park is however for adults only."

Consider seasonal activities: Different seasons offer varying family experiences. "They had the store house decorated awesome, and it was stocked nicely, staff were super friendly. Many amenities throughout park. Many things to do around town close by," shares a visitor who stayed at Willow Valley RV Resort during Halloween.

Tips from RVers

Site selection impacts experience: Choosing the right site can significantly affect your stay. One RVer at Willow Valley comments, "We stayed at site 63 which backs up to the creek and is paved," highlighting the benefits of researching specific site attributes before booking.

Connectivity considerations: For those needing reliable internet access, prior planning helps. "They have super fast WiFi so didn't need our tailgater and just used the smart TVs," notes a camper at Willow Valley RV Resort, suggesting that some parks offer connectivity solutions that eliminate the need for personal hotspots.

Road noise awareness: Location within a campground matters for noise sensitivity. A camper at River Vista RV Park shares, "After being assured our lot along 246 would be quiet, I was quite disappointed and got poor sleep. Lots of road noise. Would not stay near 246 again."
