"There are 2 fantastic disc golf courses (I personally enjoy the Wellspring course) and even a historical farm that sheds light on what life was like as a farmer in 19th century North Carolina," reports Kelsey L.

Paddle sports: Lake waters provide ideal conditions for novice and intermediate paddlers. "Kayak rental, disc golf course, playground, picnic area and nature trail. Sites are a bit close, go for a lakefront site or one on the side of the campground," advises Leigh R. from Lake Reidsville Recreation Park.

Summit hiking: Several area peaks offer moderate trails with regional views. "Moore's Wall Loop Trail is a 4.3 mile strenuous hike, and it begins by walking by the lake. There is a platform about halfway through the hike in which you can see the skylines of Greensboro and Winston-Salem," notes Myron C. at Hanging Rock State Park Campground.

Water access: Multiple sites allow direct lakeside camping. "The campground is on a peaceful lake, popular with boaters. Site 10 had a nice view of the woods," writes Leigh R. about Lake Reidsville Recreation Park. Another camper, Luis V., adds, "The dock area was a favorite spot of mine — great for fishing, relaxing, or just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere."

Winter camping options: Several campgrounds maintain year-round operations. "We stayed here in the winter months (Feb - April) and it was really nice. Nearest town for groceries is 10 min away but you'll have to travel to Greensboro for bigger stores. Lake is peaceful and provides beautiful sunsets," shares Bri N.

Pet-friendly trails: Brookhaven Mill Farm offers unique animal encounters alongside traditional camping. "I stayed overnight while passing through to Mississippi. The host was very gracious in our email conversations. I setup right near the picnic table with a view of the mini horses," reports Karen M.

What you should know

Traffic noise: Highway proximity affects sound levels at several campgrounds. "The freeway noise is the biggest negative. The host was extremely nice and friendly, the gravel sites are wide enough but ours was way off from level. Nice dog area and small playground," explains Kelly N. about Greensboro KOA.

Site preparation: Many tent platforms have specific dimensions to consider. "Our site (B20) was reaaally uneven but we made it work for 2 tents! If you tent camp in the B lot, the bathhouse is a bit of a walk," advises Morgan A. at Hagan-Stone Park.

Gate restrictions: Campground security measures may limit after-hours movement. "The campsites are alright minus the hike but the downside is they lock the gate at night and no one else is there so if you have an emergency or just need to leave you can't, you're literally stuck," warns Summer C. about Cedarock Park.

Playground proximity: Select sites near play areas for convenience. "All of the sites were amazing. Trash cans, fire pits, level spots, picnic tables were at every location. Easy access to the water, playgrounds & hiking trails were just moments away from the camper," recommends Steven F. about Lake Reidsville Recreation Park.

Kid-friendly activities: Several parks offer specialized facilities for younger campers. "Plenty of places to tent camp or RV camp! Places to fish things for kids to play on and of course places to shower after! One of my family's favorite places to camp!" shares Krista H. about Cane Creek Campground and RV Park.

Off-peak timing: Consider weekday visits during school months. "There are a lot of reasons to love Hanging Rock State Park. That's why it is probably my favorite state park in North Carolina. There are lots of trails to explore, but they are not just trails to nowhere. There are five waterfalls to see," says Myron C.

Tips from RVers

Leveling preparation: Many sites require additional equipment for proper setup. "We stayed in loop C which is basically an open field. The sites are very close together. Also, there is one water connection for each two sites so would advise bringing a splitter," advises Marshall P.

Site selection: Choose carefully based on rig size and specific needs. "The RV sites are spacious and mostly level with electric, water, and sewer hookups," notes Myron C. about Oak Hollow City Campground, where "Large sites. Boating. Swimming. Close to interstates but not noisey. Can accommodate large rigs and have an open area for those traveling in tandum," according to Cindy C.

Pet exercise areas: Designated spaces provide necessary activity for traveling pets. "Great place to stay while visiting the many things to see and do in Greensboro North Carolina. The rv sites are all pull thru nearly level, big gravel sites. We had plenty of room for ort 45' plus toad. There is a nice large K9 park," shares David M. about Greensboro KOA.
