We saw many larger boats (maybe small yachts?) during the day," shares Kevin C., adding a safety note: "Stay away if you see boats going by. The boat ramp dock turns into a death trap when a big wake from a boat hits the river bank."
Winter activities: Many campgrounds near Kinderhook close for winter, but some nearby ski areas offer seasonal accommodation. "The campgrounds maintain winter trails for cross-country skiing when conditions permit," according to local information, though most camping facilities close by late October.

Privacy between sites: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground offers well-spaced campsites with natural barriers. "Big and spacious state park with many camping options. Has options for trailers, tent sites, platforms for tents and even some cabins," notes Mary-Kate L. Another camper mentions: "The platforms kept us off the ground and were helpful in setting up appropriate tarp protection!"
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain regular cleaning schedules for bathrooms and common areas. "Superb. Quiet, clean enough and well worth the price. Showers are hot and there's great water pressure. The cleanliness of the bathrooms depends on how busy the campground is," explains Perrin M.
Recreational amenities: North-South Lake Campground features swimming areas and playgrounds for families. "Located just about a mile from Kaaterskill Falls this campground couldn't be in a better spot. The restrooms were clean and had showers, which we did not expect," shares Brittany W.
What you should know
Weather considerations: The Kinderhook area experiences significant temperature drops overnight, even in summer. "Weather was warm, so we were mostly trying our best to stay cool," notes Joseph C. from Schodack Island, suggesting campers bring appropriate cooling equipment during peak summer.
Reservation requirements: During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), advance reservations are essential at most dog friendly campgrounds near Kinderhook. "This was my very first campground stay. Jamie was incredibly helpful, same with the staff that helped me park," says Ellyn F. about Spacious Skies Woodland Hills.
Pet documentation: Bring proper vaccination records for any pets. "Be sure to bring your dogs rabies records!! They don't let you in with just the tag, it has to be the paper records. We're full time so not a problem as it's always with me, but they are very strict on rabies requirements," warns Kara W.

Kid-friendly activities: Lake beaches provide safe swimming areas. "Great beach, 5 minute drive from campground. Clean facilities, with a rec room for rainy days," says Kurt S. about Lake Taghkanic. Other pet-friendly campgrounds near Kinderhook feature playgrounds and recreation areas.
Site selection strategy: Reserve early for prime locations. "The sites are amongst the most spacious I've ever seen. RV sites offer 30/50 amp electricity. There are several hiking trails, a bike trail, a really awesome playground, boat dock, and lots of picnicking," reports Kara W.
Noise considerations: Copake Falls Area — Taconic State Park maintains quiet hours for families with children. "This is basic dry camping it is fun but there is no electric or water at the sites only in the bathhouse. So if you get a site close the the bathhouse you will have water close by and electricity close," explains Amanda S.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Most campgrounds offer partial hookups with water and electric. "Located in the Hudson River Valley south of Albany lies this nice and clean campground. Water is available at different spots in the campground but not at the sites," explains Chris D. about Schodack Island.
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some campgrounds. "Second time we stayed there for overnight while traveling. Well kept. Adequate space. Friendly hosts. Terrain is uneven. Hit and miss on how flat or level sites are," warns Ray P. about Spacious Skies Woodland Hills.
Cell service reliability: Coverage varies significantly by location and provider. "ATT and Verizon fluctuate between 1-3 bars. It was enough for me to work - downloading files, sending emails, and conducting non-video zoom calls. At night we were able to stream with just a little buffering needed throughout," shares Kara W.
