Reservations are available at Cherry Plain State Park Campground in Petersburgh, New York, with nightly rates running $18 to $21 and a season that runs from late May through Labor Day. The campground sits within forested terrain near a pond, and sites vary considerably in character. Drive-in sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups accommodate RVs up to 15 feet, while walk-in sites toward the back of the park tend to offer more seclusion and distance from road noise. Cell service is essentially nonexistent here, though the town is close enough to reach if needed.
Site selection matters at this campground. Reviewers consistently recommend the walk-in sites over the road-adjacent ones, and those closest to the water draw the most interest. One walk-in site near the bathrooms requires a short, steep uphill hike. Campers exploring the region can also find campgrounds around Cherry Plain State Park to compare options before booking.
Cleanliness comes up repeatedly across reviews. Bathrooms and campsites are consistently described as well-maintained, and the park provides dishwashing stations alongside hot showers. Firewood is available on-site for $6 per bundle. Fishing and hiking trails are accessible directly from the park, and a beach draws day visitors, so sites near the loop by the entrance can see more foot traffic. Nearby alternatives like Alps Family Campground and Huttopia Berkshires give campers other bases to consider in the broader area. If a low-key overnight with solid facilities and water access fits your plans, Cherry Plain is worth a look.
Description
Cherry Plain State Park is nestled in the woods of the Taconic Valley. The park's 175 acres are a quiet alternative to other parks in the region. The park's setting on Black River Pond features a sandy beach with adjacent picnic grounds and a boat launch. The park also has bridle paths and hiking, biking, and nature trails that serve as cross-country ski trails in winter. Anglers enjoy fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel here. A special feature of the park is a Charcoal Kiln Site that can be found by hiking a trail that begins at the southern corner of the main parking lot. The Capital District Wildlife Management Area surrounds the park and offers another 4,153 acres of forested land for outdoor recreation.
