Beach fishing at Hither Hills: Surf cast directly from the shore at Hither Hills State Park Campground. The beach provides access for catching striped bass. "Great view and nice beach. Nice place to run and also ride a road bike in the mornings. Few stores close by so you don't really need to bring raw food," notes camper Ron L.
Kayaking from launch sites: Launch kayaks at Wildwood State Park to explore the Long Island Sound shoreline. Multiple water entry points make it accessible for beginners and experienced paddlers. "The North Shore and South Shore are pretty different. This site gives you the North Shore experience with high bluffs, sandy calm beaches along the Long Island Sound, and views of CT across the water," shares Amber A.
Hiking lighthouse trails: Explore historical sites on foot near dog friendly campgrounds. "We have gone there a few times. They don't take reservations but there's always some sites open. We have walked in and book a site," explains Mayra D. about Cedar Point County Park.
What campers like
Accessibility to water: Many appreciate the proximity to beaches for swimming and relaxation. "Stayed in May, June, and November 2023. The location is its best feature. The beach is just over the dunes. Village Pizza is remarkably good," reports Nancy M. from Hither Hills.
Fall camping options: Cooler temperatures and fewer crowds make September and October ideal camping months. "Spent Columbus Day weekend at Cedar Point. We pretty much the entire park to ourselves. Arrived on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a quiet peaceful weekend with cool weather and no bugs," says Chris A.
Beach camping with pets: Wildwood State Park Campground welcomes dogs and offers beach access. "My wife and I love this campground. It is right at the entrance to wine country on Long Island and has a beach on the Long Island Sound. (A little rocky on the north shore)," notes James O.
What you should know
Fire pit requirements: Several parks don't provide permanent fire rings. "Bring your own fire pit, there is no pit at the sites. Very hard to find spot thru summer though mostly RVs are occupying the whole campground for long term summer vacation," advises Murat H. about Hither Hills.
Reservation timing: Campsites fill quickly, especially during summer months. "Great place to camp, need to reserve about 1 year in advance when I went to reserve it," suggests Lou R.
Tick prevention: Wooded campgrounds near Bridgehampton require tick checks and insect repellent. Indian Island County Park provides hiking opportunities but requires vigilance. "This is not our ideal campground. We usually like to be far from people with minimal neighbors, but living on L I, your options are limited. That said, the sites close to water are nice," explains Michael G.
