      Memphis KOA

      West Memphis KOA

Small but clean. Very friendly staff. There are plenty of trees for shade. Nice pool, bathrooms and rec room. The laundry room is large and air conditioned. There is a dog park, horseshoes and cornhole. They offer daily breakfast and lunch and will deliver site made pizza to your camper. They also have a community garden.Very close to Memphis. The only downside is it has quite a bit of road traffic noise and a strange side road entrance.1

      Memphis KOA

      Just OK

Ok for a night. Easy 15 min drive to downtown Memphis for sightseeing. In a low lying area and it had rained earlier in the week. Campground very wet. Lots of puddles and muck. Should have used the gravel pile at the back of the campground to fill in potholes. Bathhouse clean but in a slight state of disrepair like loose toilets. Amenities included pool, playground, store, cafe, dog park, horseshoes, beanbag, ladder ball, bikes. Staff very nice.

Oak Grove (MS) — Sardis Lake

      Nice COE Campground

Mississippi does a great job of maintaining their COE campgrounds. Nice, spacious spots underneath large Pine trees. Water views and access to the Lower Lake. There is a popular swim beach, boat launch and boat dock. The spillway is also close by for fishing. Do not get this park confused with the John Kyle State Park Campground that is directly next to this one. This park is much nicer!

      Wall Doxey State Park Campground

      Abounds in charm and hospitality

My stay won't likely be like yours. First, I drove in while Mississippi was under a blanket of snow. All the roads in Holly Springs and the rest of the state were treacherous with packed snow and ice following a week of unseasonably frigid weather across the southern midwest.

That said, the 2 rangers working at Wall Doxey went out of their way to set me up with a parking place in the practically empty campground, putting me in the youth camp, finding me an extension cord to hook up to power and allowing me access to the group camp for a bathroom and shower.

This was necessary because many areas were either in the middle of renovation, inaccessible or out of service due to frozen pipes. To say these ladies went out of their way to get me situated is an understatement. They were heroines!

The camp has loads of retro charm. A big mid-century lodge, picnic area, swimming lake, frisbee golf and a 2 mile hiking trail around the lake. I enjoyed a walk thru the snow and the comfort of having a safe and caring place to stay during my trip through Mississippi.

I suspect it will be the same for you even if your visit is under far different circumstances.

      Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

      Decent older campground

Took our brand new RV here for its shakedown trip the very day I picked up as it is so close to home. Was pleasantly surprised by the overall atmosphere of the campground. The entire place is completely shaded, as it seems they too the effort to not cut down many trees when putting the sites in. There is a playground for the kids. Bath houses are passable but need to be remodeled badly.

Sites are all over the place on size, so pay attention to site length on the website as you are booking if you are an RV camper. Tent campers will be happy with almost any site in the place. Another thing to prepare for is picnic are location on your site. While a lot of COE and private campgrounds tend to have the picnic are directly beside the parking spot for RV’s, only a few seem set up this way at Meeman-Shelby. Many sites have their picnic area and fire ring directly behind or even on the off-side of any RV that would use the site. I wish they would post pictures of the site for those wishing to book.

Outside of the campground is a great state park for those looking for a good hike. Tons of good trails. There is also a bike trail with another really nice playground at its trail head. Even if all you want is a scenic drive, there are some pretty good ones inside the park, and just along the parks northern edge is a road that will take you all the way down to the banks of the Mississippi River.

One more thing to prepare for is mosquitoes. This campground is immediately adjacent to low wetlands along the River. This means that mosquitoes are terrible in the summer around dusk. Some bug spray, citronella, and a campfire seemed to ward them off.

    Guide to Olive Branch

Tom Sawyer's RV Park provides riverfront sites that put campers right on the Mississippi River in West Memphis, approximately 19 miles from Olive Branch. Situated in the Delta region where the average elevation is about 300 feet, the area's humid subtropical climate brings hot summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds maintain year-round operations despite occasional Mississippi River flooding that can affect low-lying sites.

    What to do

Watch river traffic: From Tom Sawyer's RV Park, campers can observe commercial vessels navigating the Mississippi. "Tugboats pushed barges against the current at a slower than walking pace. Trees with root balls intact floated downstream," notes Greg S. in his review of the riverside experience.

Visit historical attractions: The campgrounds serve as convenient bases for Memphis excursions. "The RV park is in a part of Shelby Farms Park which is a 4,500 acres of lakes, bike and running trails, playgrounds and so much more," explains Melisa J. about Agricenter RV Park, which puts visitors within 20 minutes of downtown Memphis attractions.

Explore nature trails: State parks in the area offer hiking opportunities with varying difficulty levels. Richard mentions that Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park "has tons of trees. Every site feels like it was cut right out of the trees," making it ideal for those seeking a more natural setting amid the urban-adjacent campgrounds.

    What campers like

Concrete pad quality: Many reviewers appreciate the level pads at EZ Daze RV Park. "Level, nice concrete pads. Good hookups. Workers all very pleasant," writes deb K., highlighting the stability these pads provide for larger RVs and fifth wheels.

Security features: Campers value the safety measures at several campgrounds. "24/7 security. Staff onsite in office from 9 am to 4 pm," notes Renee H. about Graceland RV Park & Campground, which maintains controlled access through security checkpoints.

Riverside views: The Mississippi River views receive consistent praise from Tom Sawyer's visitors. "Nice size spaces with square table and benches, concrete pad, grass area view of the River (#91), across from bathhouse and laundry on the end of the row," shares Sue S., detailing the riverside site amenities.

    What you should know

Site variations: Campgrounds near Olive Branch differ significantly in site spacing and quality. At Hernando Point, Jason G. reports "The sites were easy to get into and the campground was quiet and the setting is really beautiful," contrasting with the closer quarters at other parks.

Seasonal challenges: Summer brings intense mosquito activity at some locations. Ryan S. warns about Meeman-Shelby: "If you go after the weather warms up, be forewarned that the mosquitos will eat you alive. We mostly camp at Meeman-Shelby in the fall/winter. We do not camp Spring/Summer."

Noise considerations: Urban proximity means some noise intrusion. One reviewer cautions about Southaven RV Park: "Incoming flights to Memphis start flying overhead at 4:15 am. They take a direct path over top of this park," indicating noise-sensitive campers should consider site location carefully.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Memphis offers extensive recreation options. Amy L. shares, "There were several playgrounds my son enjoyed & we had a blast doing the scavenger hunt. We were too early in the season for the blow-up slides but we definitely plan on coming back to enjoy those."

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature updated play equipment. "Areas are very clean kid friendly playgrounds. Each space was far enough but not but also in proximity to each other for those who afraid to camp out somewhere totally alone," reports Nicole about her first-time camping experience at Meeman-Shelby.

Special transportation: Some restaurants offer unique travel experiences for families. Emily B. mentions, "There is a great BBQ joint up the road, Marlowe's, that'll chauffeur you to and from the campground in a pink, pig limo. They have huge portions and great food."

    Tips from RVers

Long-term stay options: For extended stays, several dog friendly campgrounds near Olive Branch provide monthly rates. "The park is nice and clean. Really quiet the night we stayed. But don't expect much Info or help if checking in after hours," advises Mark O. about EZ Daze, noting that reservation clarity is important.

Site selection strategy: Backing into sites requires planning at some locations. Andrew from Agricenter International warns, "We watched an super long RV struggle to back into their site, so I wouldn't recommend this campground to RVs that require pull through sites."

Utility management: Power quality can vary at campgrounds in the area. One Agricenter International reviewer notes, "They are working on adding gravel to the spaces, right now though when it rains you are in a swamp. The spaces are also very close together."
