    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

Big, clean and plenty to do

The park itself is rather large, and the camping area is pretty expansive as well. Bathrooms are cleanish…but they start getting a little wild as the weekend wears on. Perpetual mud and slop from the showers, but functional. The sites are roomy enough but they are a little close together. Some sites are shaded, some are open…hard to tell when booking. Not many trees to set up a hammock on site. General store was well stocked and the staff across the board were very helpful.

Guide to Vandalia

Campgrounds near Vandalia, Michigan provide a range of camping experiences within southwestern Michigan's rural landscapes. The region features numerous lakes, rivers, and forested areas that support various outdoor recreation. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F with occasional thunderstorms, while early fall brings cooler nights and colorful foliage changes throughout the area.

What to do

River activities: Shamrock Park in Berrien Springs offers direct access to the St. Joseph River with specialized facilities. "There's a large stack of firewood, so it's easy to get a bundle that's good and dry. What impressed me most was that they have a building specifically for cleaning fish, with scales, cutting boards and sinks," notes camper Brian O.

Lake fishing: Spaulding Lake Campground maintains multiple fishing ponds stocked with fish. "3 fishing ponds that are well stocked. Most lots pull thru and many shaded. Kids playground is big with a basketball court," reports Erwin Y. The campground provides a dedicated swimming pond separate from the fishing areas.

Sand dune hiking: Warren Dunes State Park Campground features massive sand dunes that visitors can climb. "Mt. Randall is the high dune to climb but not for the faint of heart!!! And beware, the sand does get HOT midday," warns Heidi S. The park maintains hiking trails through wooded areas away from the dunes section.

What campers like

Proximity to town: Shamrock Park sits near local services. "1/4 mile from the lovely village of Berrien Springs. We biked to town. Great friendly Pub for a cold one and a 5 star resturant right down the street," shares Robert D. The location combines quiet camping with easy access to necessities.

Cave tours: Thousand Trails Bear Cave offers a unique geological feature within the campground property. "There is actually a cave in the campground that you can take a tour of while you are here. There is also a waterfall right next to the cave," explains Jerry S. The natural cave formation provides an educational opportunity during your glamping trip near Vandalia.

Clean facilities: Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney maintains well-kept restrooms. "Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer," Kelly F. comments. The resort also offers specialized patio sites with additional furnishings.

What you should know

Site spacing varies: Campgrounds in the region have different site layouts and privacy levels. At Elkhart Campground, one camper observed: "We were placed in the rear section, which was just ok. Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites."

Cell service fluctuates: Connectivity varies widely at glamping locations near Vandalia. At Thousand Trails Bear Cave, a camper reported: "No internet, no cell service. If you want wifi then its 5.95 per day or if your here for a week + then 34.95 for the month up to 4 devices is your best bet."
