Beyond the glamping options at Warren Dunes, camping near New Buffalo, Michigan offers access to both developed campgrounds and primitive sites within 30 miles of Lake Michigan's shoreline. The area features over 25 miles of sandy beaches and dunes with some rising more than 240 feet above lake level. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F with cooler nights along the lake.
What to do
Hike the dunes challenge: At Indiana Dunes State Park, visitors can tackle the popular Three Dune Challenge. "The 3 dune challenge is not really a challenge if you are moderately healthy but it is fun and scenic! The cool soft sand feels fantastic, definitely best hiked barefoot," notes Greg S.
Fishing options: Shamrock Park offers excellent river fishing along the St. Joseph River. "What impressed me most was that they have a building specifically for cleaning fish, with scales, cutting boards and sinks," reports Brian O.
Beach swimming: Dunewood Campground provides quick access to Lake Michigan swimming. "Loved the proximity of this campground to Lake Michigan! The closest beach within the national park is Kimmel Beach which is beautiful. There are some biting horseflies at the beach, but not at the campground," shares Katie O.
Nature viewing: The area offers extensive trail systems connecting campgrounds to natural areas. "The park has many well maintained hiking trails and cross country skiing trails in the winter," explains Anna G. about Indiana Dunes State Park.
What campers like
Clean, modern facilities: Indiana Dunes State Park Campground receives praise for its maintained grounds. "It was also the nicest showers that I've been to to date," mentions Kaley A.
Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the generous site sizing at certain campgrounds. "We have a 37' motorhome and pulled a Jeep behind it. There was plenty of room to maneuver around. The sight also had a wood picnic table and fire ring for a wood fire pit," notes Chris M.
Dedicated camping amenities: Michigan City Campground offers practical amenities that enhance the camping experience. "The outdoor sink at the shower & restroom building for campers to wash dishes. As tent campers I wish more places had a set up like that," shares Brian O.
Security measures: "Love the secure entrance and key card access. Pool and bathrooms were clean, although the bathroom could use a slight update," mentions Beth B. about Michigan City Campground.
What you should know
Noise considerations: Train tracks near several campgrounds create noise issues. "The only reason I rate this park a three is that it's very close to train lines and the trains going through and blasting their horns all night long," warns Kaley A.
Alcohol policies: Warren Dunes State Park Campground strictly prohibits alcohol. "There is no alcohol allowed on the grounds. And if you think the rangers don't enforce that rule, you're wrong. Our neighbors got busted for it when we were there," cautions Dave E.
Beach access logistics: Despite proximity to Lake Michigan, walking to beaches requires planning. "Plan on driving your stuff to the beach or taking bicycles," advises Heidi S. about Warren Dunes.
Water conditions: Lake Michigan can present swimming hazards. "Be careful in the lake, because rip current often take young visitors out too far and into dangerous waters," warns Anna G.
