    Elkhart Campground

    3 1/2 star campground

It is a very large older CG with a few upgrades. Clean, with decent amenities. We were placed in the rear section, which was just ok. Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites. Laundry room, pool and bathrooms were very clean. Large dog park, but was far from our site. Was only 25 min from Notre Dame and about an hour from lake Michigan WiFi was great, no cable, but good antenna reception

    Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday

    Nice campground

I stayed at this place when it was B&B and it is now a KOA. Several new sites were added and the park appears to be much cleaner. The restrooms are nice and the camp personnel are friendly. There is a dog park for walking the dog but with so much driveway I just walk the dog around the park. They have several dog bag stations around the park to make clean up easy. There are 3 playgrounds and boat area on the lake. I believe you can rent boats to fish even though I never have. I will definitely stay here again.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

    Good location and friendly staff

Clean and nice little park with a cool "trading post" with nice merchandise, snacks and food. They have a dog park and trails on the property with a longer bike trail that runs alongside the campground. They had a band one night and an ice cream truck come through the next. Would recommend!

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Great campground!

Great campground in the heart of Amish country. Near Elkhart and the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum. Great place to visit, really interesting. Also, near Shipshewana. Campground has lots of activities: pool, miniature golf, volley ball, fishing pond, big chess set, bike rental, mining area, playground, and rec. hall w/ video games, pool, ping pong, air hockey, and juke box. Nice little store. Dog park. Clean restrooms. Friendly owner and employees. Lots of mature shed trees.

    Weko Beach Campground

    Great little campground

Couple minute walk to the beautiful Lake Michigan beach. Waist deep most areas, waves can get big tho. The campgrounds beach is NOT pet friendly, but there is a flat boardwalk that takes you to a pet friendly area of beach of neighboring Warren dunes state park. Clean easy to locate water/trash/office areas. Friendly staff. They check the loops frequently and keep things tidy. Sandy but drivable roads(be careful in a washout). Flat nice sized lots. Clean bathroom/shower house! (Males and females share showers, could be concerning during busy season). Peaceful and quiet. Loved everything about our trip. (Be warned the camping lots are sand too, you will have sand everywhere! But its worth it!)

Guide to Vandalia

Vandalia, Michigan sits at an elevation of 830 feet in the southwestern part of the state, surrounded by several lakes that make it a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The climate features warm summers with temperatures often reaching the mid-80s, making lake activities particularly appealing. Most campgrounds in the area remain open from April through late October, with some extending their season into early November depending on weather conditions.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Elkhart Campground provides access to fishing spots within a 25-minute drive of Vandalia. "Close to big lake too!!!" notes camper Barbara E., highlighting the proximity to larger fishing waters.

Miniature golf and games: Eby's Pines Campground offers activities beyond typical camping. "Tons of stuff to do for campers of all ages. Roller skating, mini bowling, laser tag, and an arcade at the fun center," reports Jason S., who visited with family.

Nature trails: Explore walking paths near campgrounds that connect to local parks. "Trails lead to a local County park - Bonneyville Mill," writes Angela F. about Eby's Pines, mentioning the natural surroundings that remain accessible even during busy holiday weekends.

Swimming: Multiple lakes provide swimming options throughout the summer months. At Bear Cave RV Campground, "a heated pool" is available for swimmers, according to Gay G., who also noted the campground "sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Visitors frequently mention well-maintained bathrooms and common areas. "The bathrooms and showers were well maintained," writes Nicole P. about her stay at Shady Point Campground, where her "family spent 4 nights" and "the staff was extremely accommodating."

Family-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds offer specific features for children. At Elkhart RV Resort, campers appreciate the balance of activities and accessibility. "The kids used the pool, which was a bit cold but large. We ordered pizza from the store, which was delivered to the site quickly," notes Joan in her review.

Spacious sites: Several campgrounds provide adequate room between sites. At Cranberry Lake Campground, one visitor found good value, stating "This is one of the first places I felt gave me a bang for my buck. Park near store and get great WiFi....I spent 14 days streaming, gaming and watching movies."

Recreational activities: Beyond standard amenities, many campgrounds offer additional recreation. "There is a great brewery behind the park that is within walking distance," mentions Brian H. about Elkhart RV Resort, adding that "Facilities are older but clean and the amenities for kids are great."

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer months bring higher temperatures and crowds. "During summer months, early morning walks are recommended as asphalt camping pads can become hot," is advice relevant for dog owners in the area.

Site variations: Quality and size of sites can vary within the same campground. At Eby's Pines Campground, "RV Sites are stacked on each other. We chose 306 and it was ok by the pond... Our friends had 310 and there was barely room to put their awning out," reports Leann O.

Limited cell service: Some campgrounds have poor connectivity. Bear Cave RV Campground is described as "a very nice off the grid camping with no cell service but if you want wifi then its 5.95 per day," according to Jack, who provides details about the paid internet option.

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience railroad disruptions. "There is an active railroad nearby this campground. 4 Trains woke us up during the night," warns Irene O. about her stay at Elkhart RV Resort.

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly activities: Many campsites welcome pets with specific amenities. Elkhart RV Resort offers "a small off leash dog run," according to JD C., making it one of several dog friendly campgrounds near Vandalia that accommodate pets.

Kid-friendly water features: Look for campgrounds with swimming options beyond just lake access. At Thousand Trails Bear Cave, Gay G. notes they have "a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites)."

Weather preparedness: Temperatures can fluctuate significantly, especially in spring and fall. Camper Kathy S. notes at Elkhart Campground, "When we've camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months," indicating cooler temperatures requiring heating during these shoulder seasons.

Security measures: Several campgrounds offer added security features. Bear Cave RV Campground "has a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted's," according to Gay G., who also mentioned "Quiet hours are 10p-8a."

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited at some campgrounds. At Bear Cave RV Campground, "The only sewer hook-ups are all taken by seasonal campers," notes Jerry S., who also mentioned the sites are "a bit on the smaller side."

Leveling challenges: Some sites require additional work to level RVs. About Elkhart Campground, MickandKarla W. report, "Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites."

Pump-out services: For RVs without sewer connections, alternative services exist. At Bear Cave RV Campground, Jack explains they "have an onsite honeypot which will suck out your tanks for $10 each time around" for those without full hookups.

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. While many dog friendly campgrounds near Vandalia can accommodate RVs, site selection matters, especially for larger vehicles needing adequate turning space and hookups.
