Tent campsites near Middle River in Maryland include forested walk-in sites and primitive boat-in access on the Chesapeake Bay. Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area provides tent camping within a forested environment approximately 15 miles west of Middle River. The park features walk-in tent sites and accepts reservations from April 1 through October 30. Hart-Miller Island State Park offers boat-in tent camping access on the Chesapeake Bay, with primitive tent setups available from May through September.

The tent camping areas at Patapsco Valley have crushed stone tent pads that may present challenges for traditional tent stakes. Campers should bring alternative securing methods as noted in visitor reviews. Each tent site includes a fire ring with cooking grate and picnic table. Bathhouses with hot showers and clean toilets are centrally located within the campground loop. During rainstorms, lower elevation sites experience significant water flow, so campers should select higher ground sites when possible. No alcohol is permitted in the park, and firewood must be purchased on-site to prevent pest introduction.

Tent campers at Patapsco Valley State Park can access numerous hiking trails directly from the campground via the Campground Connector Trail. The heavily wooded setting provides shade and a sense of seclusion despite proximity to Baltimore. According to one visitor, "We found everything reasonably priced. This is a very nice small campground that is great for kids!" The park features two playgrounds within the camping area and another larger one near the entrance. For those seeking water activities, some reviewers mentioned finding swimming holes along the Patapsco River accessible via short hikes from the campsites. Sites tend to fill quickly during summer weekends, with more availability and cooler temperatures during the spring and fall shoulder seasons.

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

      Country Acres Campground

      Excellent But.

The campground is in excellent condition. The facilities are top notch. The excellence and care of the campground is evident. The 4 stars is only due to the road noise and many of the sites are on top of each other. You feel like your neighbor is at your camp fire.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

    What to do

Water activities: At Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area, campers can find swimming holes along the Patapsco River. According to one visitor, "We found a small river and swimming hole at the bottom of the hill off to the side opposite the cabins/park." The park sits approximately 15 miles from Middle River.

Fossil hunting: Sandy Point State Park offers unique beach activities within driving distance of tent campgrounds near Middle River. As one camper notes, "My family and I have been coming to Sandy Point my entire life. It is a great little spot on the Chesapeake river. Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth."

Hiking trails: The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring combines tent camping with access to North America's largest aerial challenge course. A reviewer mentions it's "Very convenient for before or after your time in the largest aerial challenge course in North America." The park maintains several walking trails connecting camping areas to recreation zones.

Wildlife viewing: For bird watchers and nature photographers, tent camping destinations near Middle River provide habitat viewing opportunities. A visitor to Hart-Miller Island State Park described seeing "small crabs were skittering around the campsite and birds perched in the marsh" during their stay at this boat-in camping location.

    What campers like

Playgrounds and facilities for children: Parents appreciate the recreational structures at Finksburg Forest and other nearby camping destinations. At Patapsco, one camper noted, "This area is, possibly unintentionally, geared toward children. There is a massive playground, nature play space, sensory trail, and a small nature center."

Privacy between sites: Tent campers consistently mention site spacing as important. At Blackbird State Forest Campground, a camper shared that "The camp sites are spaced out a good amount so each site has good privacy. There are multiple port a potties here but some sites are a bit far from them."

Accessibility to Baltimore: Tent campers value proximity to urban areas while still enjoying outdoor experiences. A Patapsco Valley reviewer stated, "Very short drive in to Baltimore- around 30 minutes. Getting in to the park was a little difficult. We missed the entrance and had to turn around."

Clean facilities: When tent camping near Middle River, bathroom cleanliness matters to overnight visitors. At Patapsco Valley, one camper observed, "The bathhouse is nothing special, but it's well maintained and clean."

    What you should know

Weather considerations: Tent camping sites near Middle River often experience drainage issues during storms. At Patapsco Valley, a camper advised, "When it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm."

Jellyfish season: For tent campgrounds near water access points, seasonal wildlife factors affect swimming. At Sandy Point, a regular visitor warns, "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!"

Tent pad surfaces: Multiple campgrounds near Middle River have non-traditional tent setup areas. For Patapsco Valley, a camper explains, "The crushed stone at the sites isn't comfortable for tents, and they won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent to the ground."

Entrance challenges: Some tent camping areas can be difficult to locate. As one Patapsco Valley visitor mentioned, "Getting in to the park was a little difficult. We missed the entrance and had to turn around. Friends who were camping with us had the same problem."

    Tips for camping with families

Sensory trails: Families with young children should look for specialized hiking options. At Lacy Oasis Campground, a visitor explained, "My agency took about 25 children there last week and they did not want to leave, neither did I. The rates are very economical for what is being provided on the space."

Multiple playgrounds: For families with energetic kids, choose campgrounds with varied play areas. At Patapsco Valley, a camper noted, "There is a huge playground, nature play space, sensory trail, and a small nature center. There are a lot of easy, but beautiful hikes."

Age-appropriate hiking: When tent camping with children near Middle River, trail difficulty matters. One Patapsco visitor explained, "The trail was not very long but was well worth it. The trail was well marked but there was some confusion at one point on where we were suppose to go."

Check-in timing: Families should plan arrival times carefully. At Patapsco Valley, one camper mentioned, "This was also the first time we have ever had to wait till exactly 3pm to check in. So if you arrive early expect to wait until 3."

    Tips from RVers

Limited big-rig options: Large RV camping options near Middle River are restricted. Most campgrounds like Susquehannock State Park Campground have size limitations.
