Canadian geese announce the dawn at this walk-in campsite along the Potomac River, where five first-come, first-served sites sit about 500 feet from the parking area. Located within the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, the campground provides direct river access and sits just off the heavily-traveled C&O Canal towpath.
Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with portable toilets and city water available. The sites spread out along the riverbank, offering space between camping groups despite the compact area. "Overall there's a great view and the campsite appears well maintained especially for free," notes Mark M.. Road access makes this one of the more accessible hiker-biker sites in the park system, though it also increases both vehicle traffic and foot traffic throughout the day.
Campers fish directly from the shoreline and watch sunrise burn off morning fog on the water. The afternoon sun provides good conditions for solar charging equipment. Great Falls lies less than three miles away on the towpath, accessible as a day hike from camp. A rental lock house sits across the trail for those wanting indoor accommodations.
The location sees steady activity from runners, cyclists, and day hikers using the towpath. Parking fills quickly on weekends, and all overnight sites can be occupied by Friday evening. Some campers report using day-use areas when overnight spots fill up. "Pack it out people!" reminds Shari G., noting increased litter with higher visitation.
Arrive early on weekends to secure one of the five overnight sites, and bring a camp saw for processing available firewood.
