Thurmont, Maryland anchors several established campgrounds in the Catoctin Mountain region, with Cunningham Falls State Park serving as the main destination for overnight stays. The area features both Manor and Houck areas within the state park, offering a mix of tent sites, RV spots with electric hookups, and cabin accommodations. Campers can find relatively developed facilities at Owens Creek Campground in Catoctin Mountain Park just north of town, while Gambrill State Park provides additional camping options about 20 miles south. Most campgrounds in this region maintain designated sites with amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and access to potable water, though amenity levels vary significantly between primitive tent-only areas and more developed mixed-use campgrounds.

Seasonal operations impact most campgrounds around Thurmont, with the majority open from April through October. Cunningham Falls State Park's campgrounds typically close for winter, though some areas offer limited year-round access with reduced services. Advance reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for summer weekends and during peak fall foliage season when the area draws significant crowds. The park's proximity to Route 15 means some campground loops experience road noise, especially in the Manor Area. "Beware: The sites on the lower side of the road are pretty level. The ones on the upper side of the road are short and have a lot of slope due to run-off when it rains," noted one camper about site selection at Manor Area.

Many visitors highlight the recreational opportunities beyond camping, including hiking to Cunningham Falls, swimming at the park's lake, and exploring the nearby historic Catoctin Furnace. Campground reviews frequently mention site privacy as variable throughout the region, with some areas providing well-spaced, shaded sites while others offer less separation between campers. A recent review noted, "Site was very shaded, and quite secluded. Camping pad was nice and level, although the driveway was slightly sloped. Nice amount of space in between sites." The developed campgrounds in the area generally maintain clean restroom facilities, though their condition can fluctuate during busy periods. Families appreciate the playgrounds and nature centers found at several campgrounds, making the Thurmont area particularly suitable for those camping with children.

      Hosack Run

Quiet & Dog friendly - 20minutes from Gettysburg Battfields

This pet friendly campground in Caledonia State Park is .8 miles from the larger Chinquapin campground (no pets), ranger station and swimming pool. Our site #171 was level, paved, full hook ups and next to modern clean bathrooms with flush toilets, warm showers and outside dish washing sinks. Many available sites with and without services on a Sunday in October. There were a good number of friendly, tidy, long term campers with large wall tents. (They allow 21 day stays after Labor Day)

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

Harpers Ferry Campground - River Riders

      Stunning veiws

Primitive feel with full hookups. I have a 22' trailer, and it fits fine. I hope you like trains. Plenty of them go by.

      Gambrill State Park Campground

      Great Camp Spot

This is a great camping spot. The sites aren’t too close together and the hosts are very friendly. The only reason I gave it four stars is because we are near a highway so you can hear cars throughout the night. But the crickets make up for it by being as loud as possible. With the fees, it cost $25 for a non-electric site and with access to showers after a long trek I was happy to pay.

      Redemption Springs

      Pleasant Stay and Hosts

We stayed at Redemption Springs to get relatively close to Baltimore without bringing our 30ft travel trailer into the city. Seth and the other gentlemen I spoke with were all extremely accommodating. Enjoyed learning about their approach to restorative farming and purchasing a variety of treats at the farm store. Beef, pork, chicken, seasonings, baked goods, and more. We booked on Hipcamp and recommend following his driving instructions. Our rig fit fine by tuhe main barn and they kept an eye on us going in and out to make sure we didn't have issues making any of the turns. Lots of farm life!

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA

      Close to history!

This KOA offers close and cozy get away near Harper’s Ferry Virginia. Technically within walking distance to the National Park shuttle to downtown. Spots are open and spaced out and they offer private showers/bathrooms

Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA

It is absoluutly the worst ever experience

The staff is certainly at the office not competent. Someone ran over my house when we were away and damaged it. The WiFi didn’t work any of the day but upon assistance request no one was willing to help. It couldn’t be worse. We have no other words except never a KOA location again.
