Cabin rentals are available at multiple established campgrounds within 30 minutes of South Portland, including Bayley's Camping Resort in West Scarborough and Wild Duck Adult Campground in Scarborough. Most cabins provide basic electric service with access to communal shower facilities and toilets. Cabin amenities typically include beds, picnic tables, and fire rings, though specific furnishings vary by location. "We stayed for 3 nights in late July. This adult only campground is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of birds and the trees being the main thing you hear," noted one visitor about Wild Duck. Some properties offer waterfront cabin locations with views of Scarborough Marsh, while others position cabins near recreational facilities like swimming pools.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Several campgrounds operate seasonally, with most open from May through mid-October, closing during winter months. Pet policies vary by property - Bayley's and Wild Duck both permit pets in certain cabins with additional fees. Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak summer season when availability becomes limited. According to one visitor at Bayley's, "This campground is amazing! Very family friendly, dog friendly...everything friendly! The owners are doing an amazing job." Some properties maintain adult-only sections or are entirely adults-only, which appeals to couples seeking quieter surroundings.

Most cabins include basic furniture but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Cooking facilities typically consist of outdoor fire rings, though some deluxe cabins may offer small refrigerators or microwaves. On-site camp stores at locations like Bayley's Camping Resort sell firewood, basic groceries, and camping supplies. Guests staying at Scarborough area cabins benefit from proximity to Portland's shopping districts, approximately 20 minutes away. The closest convenience stores and markets are within 5-10 minutes of most cabin locations. Bathroom access depends on cabin type - most utilize centralized bathhouses rather than in-cabin facilities. During shoulder seasons, fewer on-site amenities may be available as campgrounds transition to limited operations.

Shore Hills Campground & RV Park

Been coming here for years and always enjoy it.

We’ve camped here for over fifteen years and always have a great experience. The campground has nice sites, water access, nature preserves and hiking within a short distance and is close to Boothbay Harbor and many other beautiful coastal Maine Towns. Since we have a big-rig, we choose to stay in the full hook-up section in the front (sites 100-149) that has long level pull thru and back-in sites. The only downside of this section is that the sites are in the open with few trees for shade and no privacy between sites. Some sites have a wooden deck on the patio with a railing around it and others have a grassy/gravel patio. RV’s 36’ or less have more choice for sites whether you want shade in the woods or waterfront. Hookups are variable (regarding electric) so be sure to check the map before picking a campsite. A dump station is located in the front of the campground. There are two bathhouses (each with laundry) that are at both ends of the park. Waterfront sites are beautiful with a view of the marsh and tidal river. Just be aware that the tides are 10-12 feet and when the tide is out, you are looking at a mudflat. There are also tent sites that are nicely wooded. Access to the park is easy off the main road and the roads within the campground are easy to navigate. The campground accepts cash or check only. There is no online booking, you either call them directly or fill out a form and mail it to them. There is a kayak launch and the campground does have boats for rent. A great amenity is the shuttle that takes you to downtown Boothbay Harbor since the parking downtown is expensive.

      Powder Horn Family Camping Resort

      Great Place

Very Clean. They mow something everyday. Asphalt roads. Easy access to every spot. Extra clean showers and restrooms. They have activities for all ages. But no dog park. Why not? They have plenty of room.

      Great campground and stay

Park is nestled in the woods with a lot of activities outdoors. Walking trails for people and dogs. Great laundry, bathrooms, office/store, cafe. The roads into the sites are tight but they guide you. We have a 30’ trailer and 20’ truck, I wouldn’t bring a trailer longer than 35’ in unless you are really good in tight spaces. Site 110 is a great pull thru.

      Hemlock Grove Campground

      Love!

LOVE this campground. Beautiful grounds with campsites nestled in a hemlock pine forest with lots of forest all around. So peaceful. Full hookup. Nearby Kennebunk and Kennebunk Port. No hiking trail on the grounds but many a short drive away. Pickleball and disc golf nearby. Only bummer was we wish we stayed longer. We would love to return for a week or more!

      Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground

      Quiet, clean, fun

This was a cool agritourism campground. A little pricey but the cleanest campground I have stayed at over the last month and a half traveling around the great lakes area and then into New England. I'm traveling solo but definitely a cool spot if you have kids, the outhouses are kept as spotless as one could hope for and there are is a cool loop trail around the property that has educational stops. Camp store has local produce and food from the farm, there are trails where you can go down to the shoreline.

Shore Hills Campground & RV Park

      Great Spot

It's old school in that you can't reserve online, and they only take cash or checks, but the campground is beautiful, clean and well maintained.

      Sebago Lake Family Campground

      Find a better place!

We just came back from a big family weekend there. We had 5 sites with 19 people(including children). This is by far the most rundown campground I've stayed! Only 1 bathroom facility was functioning. Of the 3 times I tried taking a shower, I only succeeded 1 time. The other 2 times(once at night and once the following morning at 6am) I only got drops coming out of the hot and cold faucets. I tried the only 2 stalls. Speaking of bathrooms...these have not been updated since the 60s-early 70s when I was camping with the same style bathroom facilities. The children's playground should be condemned!!! At least 25% of the wood is rotted. Some steps are missing from ladders. My granddaughter was swinging in the childs swing, the bottom unlatched and she fell through the bottom. If she wasn't monkey like in holding on she would have done a face plant to the ground. After looking at the swing, I found the plastic latch broken! 2 positives: the campsites are very nice! and the beach is great! Bottom line, these owners are not putting any money back into the campground and it's facilities. They are running it into the ground. I won't be coming back again!

    Guide to South Portland

Cabin rental options exist at several campgrounds within 20 miles of South Portland, Maine. The southern Maine coast sits at sea level with tidal marshes and sandy beaches, creating unique camping experiences year-round. Average summer temperatures range 65-78°F, with coastal breezes moderating the heat compared to inland locations.

    What to do

Kayaking marsh waters: At Wild Duck Adult Campground, you can access the Scarborough Marsh through nearby waterways. "There is a culvert under Rt 9 that you need to pass under which is dangerous - the Audubon Center informed us that people have flipped in the culvert due to the current, and that there are obstructions under water," warns one visitor, suggesting the nearby Audubon center as a safer launch point.

Farm experiences: Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground offers unique camping cabins with agricultural activities. "We loved that there was a working farm within the camp ground," notes one visitor. Another camper adds, "A beautiful place with a farm, campground and state park all together! The working farm is open to visit and walk around. Pet the baby cows and see the pigs and goats."

Beach activities: Most camping cabins near South Portland provide beach access, either directly or via shuttle. "The beach is close but not close enough to walk too. We were in an rv and had to unhook to go anywhere," explains a visitor at Old Orchard Beach Campground. Local beaches offer swimming, sunbathing, and fishing opportunities from May through September.

    What campers like

Adult-only environments: Some cabins provide age-restricted accommodations. "This adult only campground is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of birds and the trees being the main thing you hear - it is quite relaxing," notes a visitor at Wild Duck. Another adds, "First time for us at this campground but not our last. A small campground with not a ton of sites but that is what we like."

Pool facilities: Old Orchard Beach Campground offers swimming options beyond the beach. "They have a pool and hot tub. There is a small, but very well-kept dog park. On top of all that there is pinball, Pac-Man, and pool table!" A different camper mentions, "Really nice clean pool and hot tub!"

Trolley service: Several cabin campgrounds offer transportation to nearby beaches. "There is a trolly that will take you to the city for $2, but if you have a bicycle it is a quick 15-minute ride to the beach," notes an Old Orchard Beach Campground visitor. Trolleys typically run hourly during summer season from 9am to 10pm.

    What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most cabin rentals operate on limited schedules. "[Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground is] open to the public, free of charge every day and is committed to continuing and improving upon the long tradition of sustainable agriculture, recreation and education while preserving its open space," explains one reviewer, though cabin availability still follows seasonal patterns.

Mosquito preparedness: The coastal marsh environment creates insect challenges. "The only negative of this place was the mosquitoes. They were TERRIBLE. In the time it took after we parked the camper, to when I could dig the bug spray out of our truck I was covered in bites," warns a Wild Duck visitor. Bug spray with DEET is strongly recommended from May through September.

Site spacing: Cabins at most campgrounds have limited privacy. "Not our favorite campground. This place is large with a lot of really close campsites not so private," notes one reviewer of Bayley's Camping Resort. Site layouts vary significantly between campgrounds, with some offering more wooded separation than others.

    Tips for camping with families

Tidal considerations: Plan beach activities around tides. "If you have little ones, time your beach trips with low tide. The waves crash pretty hard at high tide," advises a visitor at Wild Acres Tent & Trailer Park. Tide charts are typically available at campground offices.

Farm-to-table options: Some campgrounds integrate food production. "The farm cafe on site with local food. We loved that!" shares a Wolfe's Neck visitor. Another adds, "The food at the snack shack is sooo good!! burgers, pizza, salad- all local and from their gardens."

Playground access: Facilities for children vary between properties. "[Winslow Park] is a local family getaway park, camping, swimming or just sitting by the ocean," notes one visitor. Site selection can impact convenience—ask about proximity to play areas when booking cabins with children.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Cabins are more stable than RVs, but worth noting if you bring your own accommodation. "Our gravel site was perfectly level with no potholes and the roads leading to our site were easy to navigate in our 45' motorhome," reports a visitor at Old Orchard Beach Campground. This demonstrates the quality of infrastructure that extends to cabin areas as well.

Wi-Fi considerations: Internet connectivity varies widely between properties. "The wifi was pretty terrible. We paid extra for what was supposed to be fast, streamable wifi, but at times that didn't work at all or was very slow," warns a camper at Sun Outdoors Old Orchard Beach Downtown. Cell service through Verizon typically provides 2-3 bars throughout the South Portland region.

Off-season benefits: Cabin camping outside peak season offers advantages. "We were in the off-season but can only image the park gets pretty busy especially in the front section where the swimming pool, arcade, camp store, and other activities are located," notes an Old Orchard Beach Campground visitor, highlighting the trade-off between amenity availability and crowds.
