We paid 15$ online to reserve a spot for the night but I’m not sure if a different part of the park was free or not as advertised here. But it was very quiet and our spot (55) was right on the river and a bit tucked in the woods which was great and had an amazing view of the bridge. It had a fire pit but is rustic so no bathrooms near by. We were the only ones on that side of the campground (full map online) which was very peaceful. Be careful of spots 56,57,58 because they can flood. Overall good stay for us!
We had and absolute blast at this national park! The Blackhawk monument is one of a humbling experience. Sad to hear how it all happened.
None the less the fishing was awesome. The people were great, plus you are in distance of 3-4 states within 30 minutes you could be to anyone! The staff check on you and maintain the grounds very well. I only dropped a star because the swimming area is very mediocre. The rest, very good!
Awesome Campground. Clean, and even NEW showers that are outstanding. Storm shelter right on site. Playground is awesome for kids of all ages. Hiking trails are well marked and all over the park and state land nearby. Lookout Tower is a must see. Lower area is susceptible to flooding during extremely high water, but county staff is very proactive and hospitable with helping campers relocate from dangerous areas. This place is seriously a top notch County park and campground.
Our kids had more fun at this campground than any other so far. They have the most amazing playgrounds (yes, two of them!) That we've ever seen. There were activities for kids of all ages, and they used a rubber composite on the ground at the playground so when kiddos fall, they aren't injured. There is also a beautiful walking/biking trail and canoe rentals.
The sites were extremely level and clean, electric and water hookups. The camp host was very friendly and had plenty of firewood and ice in stock.
Excellent place to stay. Our favorite place to camp
We've been camping in our van for months now. We stayed here, visiting family. Had no reservation but it was not a problem. I like places that have RV and tents separated. The RV side was to the left and looked pretty full. The tent side was on a small loop with only 10-12 sites. We initially were the only ones there. All the sites had fire pits but one site, either 51 or 52 had that pit too close to the bushes so it wasn't really useable. We were right on the river bank with a good view of the bridge. The traffic was far enough away that we didn't notice it much. Lots of birds. Hiking trail near by that led us to the Riverwalk. Hot showers.Friendly staff. The only odd thing about this place was our site. We picked what we thought was a large site at the end of the loop, site 56. Another camper came in, a local who knew the secret I guess, went in behind us to a site that was not well marked. It's a much better site further away from everyone and into the trees. Our site must have been a good fishing spot. The whole place was nearly empty but a few fisherman parked right next to us during the day. We thought it was a bit rude but rolled with it. Checked the availability before you go. We were told this place floods on occasion and has to close. (It's that close to the river!)
No such thing as a level camping spot at this campground. Bathrooms have three toilets and one shower stall. Bathroom is outdated. Needs serious repainting and improving. Campground hosts were friendly and on top of things! There was an event at the golf course…very snotty ladies parked their vehicles on our campsite and refused to move. Campground hosts were notified and they alerted DNR who in turn forced them to remove vehicles off our paid and reserved campsite. No playground equipment for children to enjoy. No dump station for RVs.
