One of the least populated states in America, Idaho is the third state that makes up the Pacific Northwest—besides Oregon and Washington. This is a large and wild state, spanning two time zones and stretching from the Canadian border all the way south to Utah and Nevada. Its vast tracts of old-growth forests, various subranges of the Rocky Mountains and Hells Canyon, America’s deepest canyon, make camping in Idaho an essential thing to do during any visit.


Idaho’s wide variety in landscapes and biotopes, from arid plains to towering mountains, from pristine forests to river canyons, attract an equally varied array of visitors. Fishermen are drawn to the state’s abundant and exceptional fish species. It’s the West’s only inland state where you can catch blue-ribbon trout as well as king salmon and steelhead. Mountain bikers, rock climbers, and boaters find delight camping in Idaho’s wildernesses.


Hiking and camping in Idaho is, however, arguably the state’s most popular outdoor pursuit. And it’s available all across the state. A particularly great destination is the Boise National Forest, the location of the awesome Red Mountain Trail. Other fantastic places to go backpacking and camping in Idaho include Craters of the Moon National Monument, the remarkable Bruneau Dunes State Park and iconic Yellowstone National Park, a sliver of which lies in the state’s southeastern corner.


In the middle of southern Idaho lies Shoshone Falls, a series of huge cascades on the Snake River sometimes referred to as the “Niagara of the West”. The Snake River meanders its way further west, making up the northern part of the Oregon and Idaho border, and flows through massive Hells Canyon. Ten miles wide and almost 8,000 feet deep, this is the deepest river canyon in North America, an absolutely natural gem to explore when camping in Idaho.

Off the Beaten Path Idaho

## Overview

Adams Ranger Station Cabin is located in the heart of the Nez Perce National Forest at an elevation of 5,150 feet. Adams Camp served as a way station along the Milner Trail as early as 1862. The Forest Service established the area adjacent to Adams Camp as an administrative site in 1919. Adams Ranger Station was built in 1932 for the District Ranger and his family. It last served as District headquarters in 1958. Since then, it has served as a work center, hosting a variety of summer crews.  
  
The historic cabin is available for rent year-round, except during spring melt, which typically occurs from mid-March to late May. Winter access is approximately 30 miles from Fish Creek Snow Park along a groomed snowmobile route. The cabin must be reserved in advanced; there are no walk-ups.

## Recreation

Many fun activities surround Adams Ranger Station, including numerous trails. Corral Creek, a nearby stock facility and trailhead, can accommodate horses and hikers. This trail system leads into the beautiful Gospel-Hump Wilderness.  
  
The Milner Trail, Road #641, is open to off-road vehicles in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.

## Facilities

The cabin can accommodate up to eight people and has one futon, one double bed, two single beds and two cots. Bedding and blankets are not provided. There is a vault toilet, a propane cook stove (the oven part of the stove is not hooked up to the propane and does not work), dishes, silverware, cookware, bakeware, a table and chairs. Other amenities include propane lanterns, a broom, bucket, mop, snow shovels, axes, mauls and firewood rounds. Firewood rounds provided are for heating the cabin, not for campfires in the fire ring outside. You must provide your own firewood for the outside fire ring.  
  
Water is not available on-site. Guests must bring their own or melt snow in the winter. It is recommended that visitors bring flashlights, extra batteries, matches, lighters, garbage bags, candles, lantern mantles, newspapers for lighting fires, warm clothes, rain gear, boots, white gas and small propane canisters, first aid kit, cabin shoes or slippers, maps of Nez Perce National Forest and the Gospel Hump Wilderness and lock combinations. ## Natural Features

Adams Ranger Station is near the Gospel-Hump Wilderness and part of the Salmon River/Highway 95 Corridor. The landscape in this corridor varies from the emerald Salmon River pouring through steep canyon walls to sapphire Moore's Lake in the remote Gospel-Hump Wilderness.  
  
The Gospel-Hump Wilderness has elevations ranging from 1,970 feet at the Wind River pack bridge on the Salmon River to 8,940 feet at the summit of Buffalo Hump. The northern part of the Wilderness is wetter and heavily forested; the southern part is dry and sparsely vegetated. The two parts are separated by a rugged, glaciated divide which contains the peaks for which the wilderness is named.  
  
Wildlife in the area includes mountain lions, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and wolves. 

## Nearby Attractions

Guests may wish to visit the historic gold-mining town of Florence. It is now a ghost town with a cemetery and a few long abandoned buildings.

Salmon River Resort

The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (HCNRA) straddles both sides of the Snake River in Oregon and Idaho. This Hells Canyon National Recreation Area - Idaho section includes all developed recreation sites and trails that are all located away from the Wild and Scenic Snake River in the Idaho uplands. All other upland sites and all trails in the Hells Canyon NRA - Snake River, or Hells Canyon NRA - Oregonare found in those recreation area sections. Popular recreation areas include the Hells Canyon Wilderness (Seven Devil mountain range), Black Lake, Heavens Gate Lookout, Windy Saddle, and Seven Devils recreation area. Local Idaho communities that have a variety of services (i.e. fuel, lodging, stores and/or restaurants) are Riggins, Grangeville, Whitebird, Council, and Cambridge. These communities are within one hour of this area.

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area - Idaho

This is a small developed site with shade, boat launch, and six campsites with tables and fire rings on the Lower Salmon River. BLM recreation sites attached to this stretch of river are Island Bar, Lucile, Old Lucile, Shorts Bar, Skookumchuck, White Bird, Hammer Creek and Pine Bar. ## Overview

South Fork Campground is nestled along the South Fork of Clearwater River. All standard sites are first-come, first-served, but a group site that can accommodate up to 25 people is available for reservations.   
  
South Fork Campground is well-suited to moderately-sized RVs. An abundance of recreational activities and scenic attractions are in the area.

## Recreation

Anglers can fish for trout, steelhead and salmon in the Clearwater River. Berry picking is popular in season.

## Facilities

Each campsite has a picnic table, grill, tent pad and paved parking spur. Vault toilets are provided. Drinking water is available during the peak season only. A camp host may be on-site during the summer.

## Natural Features

In the heart of north central Idaho, rugged peaks, deep canyons, dense forests and remote wilderness comprise the Nez Perce National Forest. Due in large part to dramatic elevational differences, the forest supports a wide variety of vegetation, from cedar groves to desert ecosystems.   
  
South Fork Campground is located in the Highway 14 Corridor. This area features forested canyons with sections of rugged granite outcroppings, as well as gently sloping lodgepole pine-covered uplands and lush wildflower meadows. 

## Nearby Attractions

The campground's proximity to Highway 14 makes it easy to do a scenic drive. This picturesque route winds through changing landscapes and historic areas.

Hammer Creek Recreation site is a popular put-in spot for boating the Lower Salmon River via raft, kayak, jet boat or power boat. It has 12 campsites along the Lower Salmon River surrounded by semi-arid mountain peaks. Amenities include drinking water, restrooms and a RV dump station. Other BLM recreation sites along this stretch of river are Island Bar, Lucile, Old Lucile, Shorts Bar, Slate Creek, Skookumchuck, White Bird, Hammer Creek and Pine Bar. Pittsburg Campground overlooks the [Wild and Scenic Snake River ](http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/wallowa-whitman/?cid=STELPRDB5227104)in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. This large facility is open year-round with 28 tent/trailer sites many of which can accommodate large RVs and trailers. The accessible facility has accessible campsites and toilets with paved roads and camp spurs. Drinking water is available. With access to the Snake River for fishing, boating, historic intepretation, exploring and hiking within minutes of the campground, the facility is popular throughout the year.
