Cabin accommodations near White Bird, Idaho range from rustic forest service facilities to full-service resort properties. Located along the Salmon River corridor at elevations from 1,600 to 4,500 feet, the region's dry climate makes cabin camping comfortable most of the year. Winter conditions may limit access to remote cabins from November through March.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Winchester Lake State Park offers diverse fishing with multiple species available. "We caught: blue gill, trout, bass, crappie, perch, cat fish and had a small Tiger Muskie on the line but lost it," reports Jennifer R. at Winchester Lake State Park Campground.
River activities: Three Rivers Resort provides access to rafting and river sports. "The 'resort' has riverfront cabins... Add to this that the river raft guides take out at this location and this is a busy and fun place to spend a night," notes Todd M. at Three Rivers Resort & Campground.
Mountain exploration: The Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest cabins provide access to historic mining areas. "Near by attractions are Florence which is a well known location for gold mining in days past, nice place to hike and explore the area's history," writes Lesley R. about the region's backcountry cabins.
What campers like
Spacious wooded sites: Winchester Lake State Park sites offer privacy among tall trees. "Our site was tucked into the pines creating a canopy of coolness in the midst of the oppressing heat of this record breaking year," says Nancy C. "Most sites are wooded and private," adds Brock W.
Clean facilities: Cabin properties maintain well-kept bathrooms and amenities. "The park and facilities are extremely clean and have good amenities, like laundry and showers," notes Heidi C. at Bear Den RV Resort, which offers cabin options.
Quiet environment: Fields Spring State Park provides peaceful cabin stays. "Extremely quiet. Very clean restrooms," says Ch C. at Fields Spring State Park Campground, where cabins are available alongside tent and RV sites.
What you should know
Varied amenities: Cabin facilities range from primitive to well-equipped. "The 'resort' has riverfront cabins, double occupancy motel rooms, A frame cabins, RV spots with hookups and a large tent camping area," explains Todd M. describing Three Rivers Resort's accommodations.
Connectivity limitations: Cell service is inconsistent in the region. "There was no cell service for AT&T, but the market and bar had WiFi that you could access by sitting outside the front door," notes Todd M. about Three Rivers Resort.
Seasonal water access: Lake conditions vary by season. "This isn't a great lake for swimming, as it's loaded with thick algae. It is great for boating a small boat or getting lost in the thick pines around it," explains Nicholas G. about Winchester Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Winchester Lake State Park offers multiple recreation options. "Beautiful setting. Nice campsite options, tent, RV, and yurt. Nice place to ride bikes, fish, hike, and relax," says Kendra M. about Kamiah/Clearwater River KOA, which provides cabin options with typical KOA amenities.
Plan for remote locations: Cabins can be distant from towns and services. "Fields Spring State Park is about 40 minutes from Clarkston, the nearest town so make sure you stock up and don't count on cell service," advises Lee D.
Check winter activities: Some cabins provide year-round recreation options. "Camping and hiking in the summer, tubing in the winter, mushrooming in the spring. There is no time of year that is bad for this park," notes Veronica H. about Fields Spring State Park.
Tips from RVers
Overnight stays: Salmon River Resort provides convenient lodging for travelers. "Nice resort 30/50 amp water and sewer. Nice grass area for tents. River access," notes Kerry L. from Salmon River Resort.
Meal options: Some cabin locations offer food service. "The hamburgers at the restaurant were perfect for our tastebuds after a long day on the road," writes Steven L. about Three Rivers Resort, which provides a restaurant and market.
Reservation planning: Cabins in the region can fill quickly during peak seasons. "We dreaded dealing with crowds over the 4th of July weekend and back in March, this was one of the few state parks where I could get reservations in this area," shares Lee D. about Fields Spring State Park.
