Sandwiched in between the cities of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is an unlikely outdoor utopia. Formed by the Cuyahoga River, this national park is a wonderland full of waterfalls, wildlife, and historic trails. While there are limited camping opportunities here, these three campgrounds are the most-reviewed and will serve as the perfect launching point for exploring Ohio’s only national park.
1. Stanford House, OH

While there aren’t a lot of camping options inside the park boundaries, one of the spots you can camp is next to the Stanford House. Located in the central part of the park, this historic inn is used for group reservations, but they have six campsites on their property which each allow for two tents. The sites aren’t very scenic or offer much in terms of privacy, but feature amenities such as free firewood, a water storage unit and picnic tables.
“Each site is situated on grass and has a picnic table. Pit toilets, a group fire ring (firewood supplied), and drinking water are available to campers as well. Some sites are well-shaded with some privacy and others are wide open and get quite a bit of sun. Definitely check yourself and your pets regularly for ticks as they are abundant.” –The Dyrt camper Shari G.

Only a 40-minute drive from Cuyahoga Valley National Park, this spot is a great alternative if the Stanford House campground is full. The sites at Punderson State Park are nicely spread out with a good amount of privacy. There are full amenities, plenty of trails to hike and even a playground for the kids. This spot might not be for the serious adventurer, but it’s fantastic for families looking to explore the Cuyahoga Valley.
“Punderson was a great weekend get away. The campground was very clean including the bathrooms and the camp sites. There is a lake with kayak and small boat rentals, kid friendly hiking trails. The only downside is that some of the campsites are very close together. So if you are looking for a secluded camping spot this may not be the best campground.” –The Dyrt camper Tessa O.

West Branch State Park is about 15 miles from Cuyahoga Valley National Park and offers plenty of camping opportunities. With nearly 200 sites, this campground is suited for everything from large RVs to the smallest one-person tents. Sites and roads are paved and each features a picnic table and fire pit.

Switchback Kids Ranger Tip: Along the historic Towpath biking trail runs a scenic train route. Bicyclists can purchase a one-way ticket on the train for just $3/each, which is much cheaper than riding without a bicycle. This provides a great opportunity to bike one way, then take the train back to where you started. Make sure to check the timetables before heading out.
