Swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding on Lake Superior draw campers to West End Thompson City Park, a municipal campground on the south side of Washburn, Wisconsin. Sites are arranged in rows that slope toward the water, giving most campers open sightlines over the bay. The layout is largely treeless and exposed, which means mornings can be sunny without shade and there is little separation between neighbors. A beach and playground sit within the campground, and shore fishing is productive enough that a large carved trout marks the grounds.
One detail that surprises first-time visitors: the campground has an artesian well on-site. Jim C. notes the well has "nationally recognized quality of water on campground." About 40 percent of sites are occupied by seasonal campers, which can make the remaining spots competitive on weekends. An overflow lot provides a backup when sites fill, and electric hookups accommodate RVs up to 35 feet. The bathhouse has pay showers and is cleaned daily.
Tent campers consistently flag the lack of privacy as a drawback, and at least one reviewer suggests that nearby Memorial Park Campground has more tree cover if shade and seclusion matter. The campground is walkable to downtown Washburn's shops and restaurants, which makes it a practical staging point for day trips to the Apostle Islands. Campers wanting a more wooded setting can also explore places to camp around Washburn before committing to a site.
