Dirt roads lead through Chequamegon National Forest to Birch Grove Campground, a US Forest Service site set alongside two lakes in northern Wisconsin. The campground sits open to the sky more than most forest sites in the area, the result of storm damage over recent years that took out much of the tree canopy. That openness comes with a trade-off: less shade, but also better solar exposure and, as one RV camper noted, unusually reliable AT&T signal for a remote forest location.
Water access is the defining draw here. Sites along the lakes give anglers direct access to what multiple reviewers describe as productive fishing, and a boat launch accommodates kayakers and motorized watercraft. Sites are generally level, each with a fire ring and picnic table, and the campground runs self-check-in with fees between $8 and $15 per night. RVs up to 35 feet can fit, though campers should expect a few miles of forest road to reach the entrance. Hand-pump water is available on-site, though at least one visitor found the pump slow and physically demanding.
ATV and off-road trails run through the surrounding area, which draws a noticeable crowd on weekends. Weekday stays tend to be quieter, with fewer sites occupied. Trash service is provided, and pets are welcome. Reservations are available for the season, which runs May through late November. Anglers and paddlers visiting the Apostles Islands area use this as a convenient base. Campers who prefer dispersed camping with fewer neighbors might look at Twin Lakes Dispersed — Chequamegon NF just to the west.

Birch Grove Recreation Area is a family favorite if you are looking for a base camp to explore the Bayfield Peninsula. It is nestled between 22-acre East and 16-acre West Twin Lakes and is close to the community of Washburn. Each lake has a small boat access and includes bass, panfish and northern pike. During the late summer berry picking is a popular activity in the nearby Moquah Barrens.

So, if you like to boat, fish or picnic then the Birch Grove Recreation Area is the place for you, conveniently located just 8 miles west of Washburn.

From Washburn, WI, take State Rt. 13 south for 0.8 miles to Wannebo Rd. Turn right onto Wannebo Rd. and go west for 7.3 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 252). Turn right onto Forest Rt. 252 and go north for 1.9 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 435). Turn right onto Rt. 435 and proceed to campground.
