Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Shiner, TX

Palmetto State Park Campground's diverse recreation areas permit pets throughout the developed areas and campground, with leash requirements enforced on all trails and common spaces. Ten pet-friendly campsites offer water and electrical hookups suitable for tent camping and RVs, with adequate space for pets to rest comfortably near their owners. Green Dickson Park and Hub City RV Park both maintain similar pet policies with some variations in amenities. Full hookup sites at Lake Wood Recreation Area accommodate pet owners with picnic tables and fire rings at each location, keeping camping with dogs comfortable even during hot Texas summers. Sites are mostly level with some offering shade from pecan trees, making them suitable for dogs needing relief from the heat. Bathroom facilities are consistently clean and well-maintained throughout most area campgrounds.

Several hiking trails through Palmetto State Park provide good exercise opportunities for leashed dogs, with short easy routes making morning walks convenient from the campground. The park's swamp-like terrain creates a unique microclimate different from typical central Texas landscapes, with palmetto plants creating tropical ambiance throughout the park. Wildlife is abundant, with deer commonly passing through campsites in early morning hours. Seasonal considerations include summer heat which can be challenging for pets, particularly on trails with limited shade. Highway noise remains distant enough not to disturb most pets' sleep patterns. Most campgrounds near Shiner enforce strict leash policies with no designated off-leash areas, making proper restraints essential for all visiting pets. Veterinary services are limited in immediate areas, with closest options available in larger surrounding towns.

Colorado Landing RV & Mobile Home Park

    Beautiful park with great amenities

This park is on the Colorado River and the grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Large, level sites with full hookups. Two large dog parks and walking trails by the pretty river. A great Mexican restaurant is within walking distance from the park.

    Whispering Oaks RV Park

    Nice campground

We were greeted immediately by a friendly attendant, and quickly led to our campsite. The grounds were lovely, with beautiful live oaks, a manicured walking path among the oaks behind the property, and a nice garden with chickens and guinea fowl for entertainment. The property included a playground, a dog park, and an activity center (inaccessible because of COVID), laundry facilities, propane, and more. Each campsite was very clean, with a picnic table, and lights in the oaks for ambiance.

    I recommend this place!

Gateway to the Gulf RV Park at Victoria-Port Lavaca

    Cramped

The sites are back-to-back. Not long enough to park both my truck and 5th wheel. I had to park my truck offsite. Concrete parking pad with grassy lawn. Otherwise clean and taken care of. Small laundry room with old machines. Small dog park.

    Bastrop/Colorado River KOA

Easy access to the campground even during road construction

Management of campground very helpful in difficult times. We arrived during a utility upgrade so television was unavailable. Due to Covid restrictions the pool was by reservation only. The park is very pretty however only half of the campsites have shade and ours was unshaded at 90 plus degrees. The pet area was excellent. The campground is located adjacent to the Colorado river, unfortunately there is zero access to the river. With close proximity to the highway, the park was surprisingly quiet.

    Whispering Oaks RV Park

    A quiet little Gem!

What a gem of a park! We only stayed one night so I did not get to use any amenities except for the DOG Park! What a wonderful amenity with the automatic lights for after dark. Park was very clean and quiet. The way the site was set up was truly delightful. Picnic table in just the right place, Oak tree in just the right place, outdoor decorative lighting, awesome fire pit. I really wish I had time to stay longer. This place will be a“must” stay the next time I come thru. Highly recommend!

    Schulenburg RV Park

    Good Travel Stop

We stayed here for a couple of nights while touring the nearby Shiner brewery and the historic old churches in the area.  The sites are small, and there are many full timers in the park, but there are several sites available for short term travelers.   Many folks use this as a travel stop.  The owners are very nice and helpful, and give good advice on things to do in the area.  The campground is within walking distance to downtown, which offers a few pretty good restaurants.  It is also walking distance to Whataburger and a couple of other restaurants.  It is right off the interstate, but we really weren't bothered by highway noise. This is a really good travel stop and we will likely stay here again when we're passing through the area.  I'll post a few pics of the things to see and do in this area.
