    Lockhart State Park Campground

Lockhart State Park + Family Activities + BBQ

Lockhart State Park is a small park with simple facilities, but they do have a golf course and some of the best BBQ in Texas nearby.

The park is located a short distance from the town of Lockhart and about 40 minutes from Austin. The park has all the basic amenities like campsites with water, electricity, picnic tables, grills and fire rings. There are a few short trails to explore. For the family there is a swimming pool and little playground. Perhaps one of the unique features of this park is that there is a 9 hole golf course within the park.

Some of the facilities feel a bit dated. However, if you're looking for a relaxing time with family friendly activities this park might work for you.

Before or after your stay at Lockhart State Park be sure to pass through the town of Lockhart (nicknamed the BBQ Capitol of Texas) where you can choose between three of the best barbecue restaurants in Texas - Blacks BBQ, Smitty's BBQ and Kreuzs BBQ.

Colorado Landing RV & Mobile Home Park

    Beautiful park with great amenities

This park is on the Colorado River and the grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Large, level sites with full hookups. Two large dog parks and walking trails by the pretty river. A great Mexican restaurant is within walking distance from the park.

    South Shore Park

    Quiet & Private

    Pros:

    • Quick check-in

    • 176-acre park with 40 campsites on the south shore of Lake Bastrop.

    • Level site concrete pad surrounded by crushed granite.

    • Aluminum picnic table, lantern pole, BBQ grill and fire pit with cooking grill.

    • Cleaned BBQ grill and fire pit upon arrival.

    • Very private as the site was surrounded by heavy brush.

    • Even though Spring Break and the campground was packed, it was quiet.

    • Firewood is available for purchase from Park.

    Cons:

    • LCRA $6 on-line reservation fee.

    • Long waits for toilet/shower. All are family type facilities with the toilet, sink and shower as one unit behind a lock door, so one showering person ties up a toilet. There are 8“units” for 40 campsites PLUS cabins.

    • Toilets/showers could of used more frequent cleaning as they are heavily used.

    Palmetto State Park Campground

Quiet campground to hear all the birds

This is a small campground with only 19 sites, which keeps it quiet. Sites are mostly a good size and while there's no visual buffer from your neighbors, there is a decent amount of space between sites. Lots of trees around for shade, but they do interfere with enjoying the dark night sky. (You can't have everything! LOL) All sites are paved but some have odd slopes to them.

Water and 20/30/50 amp electric on each site is nice. They also have a central dump station. Firewood available from camp host, which is good because the HQ is quite a ways down the road. All sites have forwoits and standing grills.

Bathrooms seemed well-maintained and clean, showers worked well and had hot water.

Trails throughout the park are mostly short and easy but make for a nice morning walk since several come right past the campground for easy access.

Woke up to lots of birds chirping and a nice peaceful sunrise. There is some road noise but it's distant enough not to be bothersome.

T-Mobile coverage was OK, Verizon was a bit better. May need an antenna or booster to get a lot of work done.

    Victoria City RV Park

    Riverside RV Park, Victoria, Texas

The city of Victoria operates a very nice RV park adjoining the city’s recreational complex. 18 pull through sites have full hookups and are generously spaced. Cost is $12.00 per night and all sites are “first come, first served”. 50 amp service is available on each site.

The park is located within a park and adjacent to the park is a paved walking/biking path that if taken to the south, leads over to the Guadalupe River. Along the river is a 18 hole City golf course, minor league baseball field, duck pond and a children’s museum. All beautiful landscaped and maintained by the city of Victoria.

I highly recommend this park and I would certainly stay here again in the future!!

    Flatonia RV Ranch

    Nice overnight stay

We found this RV park a great overnight stop while traveling I-10. Many long termers, but they stayed to themselves. Plenty of room for big rigs. Road noise from highway, but not a negative for us. Sites are gravel/rock with grassy areas adjacent. Not perfectly level, but we wiggled the trailer around a bit in the spot until we got close. Full hookups. Laundry onsite, though we didn’t use. Looked clean. Bathroom is an odd layout with no doors separating stalls or toilet - curtains only. They were perfectly functional and clean though. Good value!

    Hub City RV Park

Very nice city park - Hidden Gem alert!

We came into this park on the 4th day of the big Texas freeze this past winter. Unfortunate for them,  pipe broke and they were out of water at the time. But it was fixed a couple days after we arrived.

Now as for the park. It has a section of 30 amp services which are in some shades and are on concrete, a newer area in the park has been created which for the most part is in a field, with new 50 amp service and are on grass. All sites have water and sewer as well. There are seasonal/annuals in the park I would say about 25% of 30amp service is. If you choose to be one, you need to go to the town and get a permit otherwise there is a two week limit to camp here.

We use ATT on Nomad Internet and Verizon & T-Mobile on our phones, ATT Wi-Fi was 4 bars and our phones were each 3 bars and no issues with any of the services,

There is  bath house located in the center of the park as you come into the entrance. The park is on a "park and hook up and then pay" system. After setting up to go to the front of the bathhouse and leave a check or cash into a box. The city of Yoakum maintains the park and it is well kept. Garbage dumpster is free and available as well. There is a playground for kids as well  as right next to a full size golf course. So you could get into your golf cart and right over to the clubhouse while never getting on a roadway.  The cost is very cheap, we paid $13 a night with senior discount, regular price is $15  That is FHU!! You will hear a plan or two during the day as there is a small airport down the street, but the low flying small planes are not too disturbing. The town of Yoakum is 5 minutes from your location and it has a Family dollar and a H.E.B as well as a few cool shops.

If your ever out that way and need a place to stay that is friendly, clean and quiet for the most part, you won't be disappointed.

    👍🏻 Pros:
    • Full hookups
    • Overlooking hillside
    • No one was camping on one side of me
    • A little shade in the afternoon
    • A couple tall Loblolly Pines still stand at this site

    👎🏻 Cons:
    • Because so many of the trees are missing, you hear more of the road noise from Highway 21 and 95
    • No privacy between spots
    • Spot is barely off main road

    📝 Park Notes:
    • Restrooms
    • Showers
    • Dump Station

    • Trails- some are pretty challenging, steep
    • Pool
    • Pavilion
    • Cabins
    • Structures built by CCC(Civilian Conservation Corps)
    • When you enter Bastrop or Buescher, You can drive or bike between the parks(11 miles@ 30 mph max), but I would not tow/drive an RV.

    🐦 Wildlife:
    • Birds: Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Bluejays, Mockingbirds, Misc small birds

    💜 Highlights of this trip:
    • Drove around this park and to Buescher State Park
    • Made a run through Buc-ee's
•🍕 Neighbors Kitchen& Yard- I definitely recommend the Pepperoni Rolls and the Prickly Pear Margarita! Great view overlooking the Colorado River. Live music sometimes.
    • Camping alone
    • Glad I went when I did. The very next day, a "controlled" burn got out of control and burned over 800 acres!

Guide to Shiner

RV camping near Shiner, Texas provides convenient stopping points for travelers along Interstate 10 with access to local Czech and German cultural attractions. The region features multiple camping options within 40 miles of Shiner, with seasonal visitation peaks occurring between October and March. Most campgrounds in the area accommodate larger rigs with varying degrees of shade and site spacing.

What to do

Visit historic churches: The Schulenburg area features several historic painted churches worth exploring. "We stayed here for a couple of nights while touring the nearby Shiner brewery and the historic old churches in the area," writes one visitor at Schulenburg RV Park.

Tour Shiner Brewery: Located just minutes from most area campgrounds, the brewery tours are popular with campers. "This is a really good travel stop and we will likely stay here again when we're passing through the area," notes a Schulenburg RV Park guest who visited the brewery.

Explore local German and Czech heritage: The region offers cultural attractions including the Polka Hall of Fame. "A small German and Czech community there are so many places to visit including Polka Hall of Fame and a cute downtown corridor with numerous shops and points of interest," reports a camper who stayed at Schulenburg.

Fish in the Colorado River: Waterfront camping options provide fishing access. "Right on the Colorado river plus two ponds to fish in. Lots of places to walk or ride your bikes," shares a camper at Thousand Trails Colorado River.

What campers like

Clean bathroom facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept shower houses. "Clean restrooms and competent staff," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Colorado River. Another visitor at Whispering Oaks RV Park mentions "Bathroom and shower facilities are very clean."

Wildlife viewing: Deer sightings are common at several parks. "Lots of wildlife and plants. When they talk about deer being everywhere, they ain't kidding," writes a visitor about Colorado River campground. Another camper adds, "Very quiet. Trails to walk and lots of deer."

Walking paths and outdoor amenities: Several parks feature trails and recreational facilities. At Whispering Oaks RV Park, campers enjoy "a manicured walking path among the oaks behind the property, and a nice garden with chickens and guinea fowl for entertainment." The property also includes "a playground, a dog park, and an activity center."

Proximity to dining options: Some campgrounds offer walkable access to local restaurants. Schulenburg RV Park "is within walking distance to downtown, which offers a few pretty good restaurants. It is also walking distance to Whataburger and a couple of other restaurants," according to a guest review.

What you should know

Cell service quality: Coverage varies by carrier with some parks offering Wi-Fi. "AT&T reception is LTE and varies by location and time. I had 1 bar to 4 bars at the same spot throughout the day," notes a camper at Colorado River campground. At Hub City RV Park, a visitor reports "ATT Wi-Fi was 4 bars and our phones were each 3 bars and no issues with any of the services."

Site leveling challenges: Some parks require adjustments for RVs. At Flatonia RV Ranch, sites are "not perfectly level, but we wiggled the trailer around a bit in the spot until we got close," according to a camper.

Long-term vs. short-term spaces: Many parks have a mix of permanent and temporary residents. "The sites are small, and there are many full timers in the park, but there are several sites available for short term travelers," a visitor mentions about one area park. At Hub City RV Park, "there are seasonal/annuals in the park I would say about 25% of 30amp service."

Road noise considerations: Interstate proximity means some traffic sound at certain campgrounds. "Road noise from highway, but not a negative for us," notes a Flatonia RV Ranch visitor. Another camper at Schulenburg RV Park writes, "It is right off the interstate, but we really weren't bothered by highway noise."

Tips for camping with families

Look for parks with playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "We brought our 7 year old daughter and she really enjoyed playing at the playground. Our site was conveniently located in front of the playground and next to the shower/bathroom/laundry facility," says a camper at San Marcos River Resort.

Consider water recreation options: Riverside campgrounds offer additional activities. "One of our favorite things to do was walk along the river and explore the trails," mentions a San Marcos River Resort visitor. Colorado River campground offers "two ponds to fish in" along with river access.

Check for seasonal activities: Some parks offer special weekend events. At Iron Horse RV Resort, "Saturday night (for the Labor Day weekend) they brought in a band - they were wonderful," according to a camper.

Scout bathroom locations: Family-friendly parks typically have accessible facilities. Whispering Oaks RV Park features "private restrooms which have their own showers instead of a combined shower and restroom common house combo like many. This made for a nice experience which more closely resembled getting ready at home."

Tips from RVers

Plan for tight navigation in some areas: Park layouts vary in maneuverability. "The roads are very rough, but that keeps the speeders under control," notes a San Marcos River Resort visitor. At Schulenburg RV Park, "It was tight to get down the roads leading to our spot but navigational if you went slow."

Arrive early for better site selection: First-come options may be available. Hub City RV Park operates on a "park and hook up and then pay system. After setting up go to the front of the bathhouse and leave a check or cash into a box."

Consider longer stays for discounts: Some parks offer reduced rates. "We paid $13 a night with senior discount, regular price is $15," mentions a Hub City RV Park visitor.

Watch for electrical quality issues: Some parks experience power fluctuations. One campground visitor reported, "We did see a fluctuation in the electrical power. We had a fan setup in the living room and would change speeds all by itself from almost nothing running to running full speed."
