Steel Wheel Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing draws families to Steel Wheel Campground, where a stocked pond on the grounds gives young anglers a low-pressure place to cast a line. The campground sits at a higher elevation above Deadwood, which keeps temperatures a few degrees cooler than the valley and provides wooded views on one side of the property. Sites are closer together than some campers might prefer, though each one includes a concrete pad, gravel drive-through access, a fire ring, a picnic table, and a garbage can.

Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. A convenience store sits adjacent to the campground, so resupply is straightforward. Reviewers consistently single out the bathrooms and showers as notably clean and roomy. The campground is on the smaller side, and while sites sit fairly close to the road, traffic is light enough that noise is rarely a factor.

Victor E. describes it as "generally a smaller, quiet camp," which lines up with the low-key atmosphere most visitors report. Nearby alternatives include Creekside Campground Deadwood just down the road and Fish'n Fry Campground and Cabins a short distance north. Steel Wheel is open year-round, accepts pets, and has reservations available, making it a workable base for anyone spending time in the Black Hills.

Best bathrooms/showers

Not a lot of privacy between sites, but plenty of room. Full hookups with convenience store adjacent. Bathrooms and showers were cleanest and roomiest we experienced in 2.5 month travels. Staff was friendly. Concrete pads adjacent to gravel drive through, and fire rings adjacent to site. Picnic tables and garbage cans at each site. Pretty close to road, but traffic was light and almost not noticeable. A few flies, but generally not buggy. Higher elevation above Deadwood, so a bit cooler.nice wooded view on one side. Generally a smaller, quiet camp. A hidden gem.

Great place

The day we was to arrive, we was delayed and didn’t get to camp site in the daylight. Gary happened to be near the office when we pulled in. He greeted and showed me my spot. The gentleman then helped me back into our spot in the dark. The campsite is great, staff is very friendly and the fishing pond is real neat. Perfect for beginners and young fisherman. We will come back.
