Close to Mt. Rushmore and Custer Stata Park

I t was convenient for visiting

My. Rushmore and Custer State Park. I would not classify it as a true resort as they advertise. Only a few amenities. But everyone has different meanings of “resort”.  It was relatively quiet. I liked no street lamps thus very dark at night for sleeping. We would stop by again just to use as jumping off place to visit sights.

Wish they would have propane as there were no close places to fill.

Bad decision to stay here. Not worth the price. Just another camp city.

From the start, this was a bad decision. Even though we advised them of the size of our RV, 44' and 20k lbs, they put us in a back in space that was on a steep hill with loose gravel. It did not work. This was a $68/night spot. Next, they recommended a pull-through spot for $125/night. For 3 nights we did not feel they had anything to justify the price. The reason for the exorbitant price is because "it was furtherest from the highway". So they "found" another pull-through for only $78/night that would handle our rig and truck. They let us look at the site but took us to the site next to the one they were offering, which was mostly flat. Our site had one-third of the site was also on a hill. So the back 1/3 of our RV was 5' off the ground. We could not use our outdoor kitchen without a ladder. We did not use it. Fortunately, we were not in camp much during our 3-night stay. This may be an ok spot for those looking for a city life experience with RVs stacked on top of one another. That is not why we travel in an RV. HTR is trying to be another KOA, according to the staff. We do NOT stay at KOAs either. We are not coming back to this campground.

Great last minute spot

Beautiful campground, friendly staff. I was able to snag a last minute weekend spot in row A for a big rig! Downside of this section is proximity to road (was informed on phone so expected), and very tight spaces. We were not able to have a fire because of how close we were to neighbors! However, the rest of campground is simply gorgeous, wooded, good amenities.

Great location for a campground.

The site we were in was far enough from the Highway that we couldn’t hear traffic and it’s right on the outskirts of Rapids City. It’s very close to Bear Country and The Reptile Gardens. We had our own parking spot and they would deliver firewood and quarters for laundry without a delivery fee.

Great experience on family vacation.

We had plans fall through a night before our reservations and they were able to put us in overflow and made sure our tanks had water. They also delivered firewood and quarters for laundry without any additional charge. We also had our own parking spot !

Front of the campground needs a bit of work.

For the price of the stay I was expecting a bit nicer site, but the back of the campground may be laid out nicer that then very front where we were placed. They had us use two spaces in section B which made the the water and sewer hook-ups awkward to hook up due to the neighbors hooking up on the sections that would have worked for us. All in all it was fine for a quick overnight stay for us as we were only stopping in at Mt Rushmore on our way out to Yellowstone/ Tetons.

Great

Very nice resort to stay at close to a lot of attractions. Really enjoyed my stay the hosts were very nice. Sites are nice and wooded so it's not like camping in a open field. Would definitely recommend staying at campground.

Absolutely Terrific!

We have stayed here many times and never been disappointed. The campground is beautiful and the new owners are very nice and professional. Facilities are clean and the location could not be better for accessing the Black Hills!

Beautiful Location - Great customer service and staff

it was a wonderful experience staying here. the property is set in the forest with full and semi full hook ups. Back in spots aren't for the faint of heart but the views make it worth it. The staff is super friendly as well. Additionally, bear country USA the drive through wildlife park is right next door which makes it fun for the whole family to drive through.

Family friendly, clean stay

We weren’t sure what to expect, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. We were glad we were just outside of the tight, hilly regions closer to Mt Rushmore... nearby to town on a main drag for supply replenishment. It was very clean and they helped us to our site. In the summer they offer a pancake breakfast! The kids loved the playground, putt putt golf and pool and it felt very safe to have them there. Bathrooms were clean. Nice pull through sites. There was SO much to do nearby! And the staff was super friendly and very helpful!

A little disappointed but overall decent

The playground is nice. They have mini golf (one in pictures is down the road - not the one at campground). The pool was closed, it went from closed 1hr, to 2hr, to maybe the whole night we were there so we gave up and didn’t get to use it. The campsites are on a hill but it is tiered with relatIvely level cement pads. No fire rings and barely any room to hang out outside of your rig or for kids to play near it. Sewer hook up was on the left side but water and elec hookups were on the right so depending on how you set up you had to walk over hookups. Close to many attractions such as Bear Country USA and Reptile Gardens.

Wooded campground with nice amenities

I enjoyed my stay at this campground. There are both RV and tent sites, and most of the tent sites are set back in the farthest part of the campground where it's very wooded and quiet. The bath/shower houses were some of the nicest I've ever encountered at a campground, and they even had laundry facilities which were a real bonus after being on the road almost 2 weeks. There are also lots of other amenities as well (a pool, playground, basketball and horseshoe courts, and some pavilions). The campground itself is fairly close to the local monuments and attractions (like Jewel Cave, Mt Rushmore, and Crazy Horse) and downtown Rapid City, and only about an hour from Wall, SD.

If I could come up with one "con", it would be that the picnic tables they have are built on tubular metal bases with uncapped ends. Basically it means that the bases are PERFECT homes for hornet nests.. the picnic table on my site had a nest in it which rendered it pretty unusable. Otherwise, that's it! I enjoyed my stay here.
