Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Charles Mill Lake Park Campground

    mixed feelings 😕

Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us. Bath houses are clean and well maintained.  Our site was not clean and ready.  Picnic table looked like it was not cleaned since last season and the fire pit was full of rubbish.  Had campers behind us who played music so loud we couldn't hear each other talk.  I asked the gentleman to please turn it down and they did slightly. Another camper also asked them to turn it down and again it was very slight.  Well after midnight music continued.  No park ranger made rounds until Saturday morning and throughout the day.

The lake is gorgeous this weekend and we enjoyed riding bikes and walking the park.

May be back to try again.

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

    Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground

Nice Quiet Campground with a lot to Offer

We arrived Friday late afternoon and set up in the rain. Didn’t see much of the park on Friday,  but Saturday we went exploring and saw the marina, beach, horse camp area, and walked some of the bridle trails. They also have playgrounds that are open and some food trucks in case you don’t want to cook.

This is the second park we have stayed at that is part of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and so far I am impressed. Large landscape sites that are full hookup with large concrete pads. Each with its own picnic table and fire pit. They also have a boat dock for the campers to use.   The lightning bugs even put on a nightly show.

    Salem-Lisbon Ohio KOA

    A Traditional KOA Experience

This was a Fall camping experience in a cabin as we knew it would be cold in the evenings.  We also had a non-camper with us so this was a nice compromise.  We had a cozy cabin with 2 bathrooms.  We also had a small kitchen where we could cook when we didn't want to cook over the fire.  This was another way for us to social distance as COVID-19 was still an issue.

I also took photos of the camping bathrooms as each KOA does it a little differently. You will notice that the bathroom is unisex.  It is a single bathroom (toilet and shower).  This is in the center of the campground.  The bathroom photos below are not of the cabin.

The cabin you see here is the Deluxe. "Deluxe Cabin(More than two Bathrooms), Patio Deluxe Cabin(w/ Bathroom)- Evergreen KL8-9-10 Perfect for large family or two couples with two queen bedrooms, sleeping loft, 1 1/2 baths, kitchenette, 3 tvs located in quiet corner with shade trees. Sorry, Not Pet Friendly! Linens are included in all seasons except Winter. Please bring pool towels." Taken from Reservation Email.

For 2 nights it totaled $153.00 which is a good price compared to other cabins we were looking at within the region.  We could have had others camping in the tent section of the campground so it is an easy way to have a mixed crowd for a camping outing.

I did type in some information into the Special Requests within my reservation booking online, as I had a question about who had to pick up the key as a friend lived closer.  No one responded and I had to call them.

Cabins Check in is at 3PM and Check out is at 12 PM

We were able to buy firewood from the KOA camp office. They bring it to your campsite and we were able to grill hotdogs and other food items on our camp fire.  Do read the general information closely and look at number 15 for a free scoop of ice cream.

https://www.whitehousefruitfarm.com/donuts  We did a donut run and explored the farm for our outing for the day.

We also spent the day checking out a local mill https://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/visit/places/mill-creek-park/lantermans-mill/

Guide to Clinton

Clinton, Ohio sits at an elevation of 1,060 feet with a humid continental climate featuring warm summers and moderately cold winters. The region receives approximately 39 inches of rainfall annually, with camping season typically running from May through October. Most campgrounds in the area occupy former farmland or wooded areas near small lakes and reservoirs.

What to do

Water recreation: paddling and swimming: West Branch State Park Campground in Wayland offers excellent kayaking opportunities on the calm reservoir. "We also took the inflatable kayaks out on the lake twice and it was so smooth and clear," notes Andrea F., who visited in July. The park also features a camper beach that's "small but nice and clean" according to the same reviewer.

Fishing: stock up on gear: Rivers Edge Camping Area provides access to the Tuscarawas River for fishing. "There is a nice path through the woods down to the reservoir, where you can fish and kayak," explains Whiskey B. The primitive camping area has pit toilets in the parking lot but no drinking water, so bring supplies.

Hiking trails: varied difficulty levels: Mohican State Park Campground features multiple hiking trails with natural features. "The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls," says Andrea F. For backpackers, John H. notes, "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites."

Winter activities: off-season options: Countryside Campground remains open through late October with seasonal events. "When we arrived the kids were trick or treating to each camp spot," reports Erin after an October visit. Some campgrounds like Evergreen Park RV Resort stay open year-round, with Beth G. noting the park has "no mud puddles, not even at water hook up" despite rainy conditions.

What campers like

Spacious sites: room to spread out: Countryside Campground offers large camping areas. "Clean campground with ample parking space. Rec hall, playground, dog park. Propane is on site," writes John R. The campground's tent sites are particularly roomy according to Jessica R., who mentions, "We stayed a few nights on Tent site 4 and had a blast!"

Privacy between sites: West Branch State Park Campground has wooded sites that create separation. "West Branch has private, spacious, shady sites. We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite," notes Alisa G., who visits annually. Another camper, dan M., simply states the park has "very private sites" and "clean individual showers."

Clean facilities: well-maintained restrooms: Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA maintains high standards for their facilities. "The staff was friendly, the amenities were clean, and the campground was quite serene," Amanda K. explains. Rae Ann P. adds that the KOA has "great shower/restrooms conveniently located" and a "wonderful staff" that keeps things "clean and efficient."

Family amenities: pools and playgrounds: Glamping close to Clinton, Ohio often includes access to recreational facilities. At American Wilderness Campground, families appreciate the "nice heated pool and many activities in the area. Hiking, canoeing, biking, etc.," as Wesley S. describes. For luxury glamping near Clinton, Canton/East Sparta KOA Holiday offers unique features, with Lisa D. noting it's "our favorite KOA! I have 4 kids and return at least 1x per year. Great family owned KOA. Horseback riding on site."

What you should know

Seasonal closures: check hours: Many campground amenities have specific operating hours or seasons. At American Wilderness Campground, J R. notes, "During the week is a ghost town 👏 this time of year," referring to fall camping. Seasons vary by facility, with most open May through October.

Reservation requirements: book ahead: Popular sites at West Branch State Park Campground fill quickly. Alisa G. advises, "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" This is especially important for luxury glamping options near Clinton during summer weekends.

Site selection: check for level ground: Choose sites carefully as terrain varies. At West Branch, Andrea F. warns, "Our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke... front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches." Despite this challenge, she still rated the experience 5 stars, stating, "Severe Sloping Site Won't Keep Us From Having Fun."

Water conditions: varies by location: Water quality and availability differ between campgrounds. For glamping accommodations near Clinton, Ohio, some offer full hookups while others have more primitive setups. At Clay's Resort Jellystone Park, Chuck E. reported the lake was "virtually algae free, and even during this pandemic, it didn't feel over crowded at any point."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: structured programs: Clay's Resort Jellystone Park offers numerous activities for children. "This campground is large with a water park that has Ziplining and other great activities for the family," says Linda R. Michael J. adds, "have been camping at Clays for a couple years now and if you have kids there is no place better tons of things to do."

Safety considerations: swimming areas: West Branch State Park has designated swimming zones with safety measures. "The camper beach was small but nice and clean," reports Andrea F. The park also features a "book exchange shelf at the shower house in case of rainy days," according to Alisa G., who adds that "the park office loans games and sports equipment to campers."

Wildlife encounters: prepare accordingly: At Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA, Traci F. shares, "Every night we were visited by raccoons, they stole our trash on the first night but the other nights we kept everything out of their reach. There were fun little raccoon hand prints all over though." Secure food and trash properly at all campgrounds.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: what to expect: For luxury glamping near Clinton, Ohio, Countryside Campground provides essential services. Kathryn P. reports, "Each site comes with a fire ring and picnic table both in good condition. The pull thru sites were a tad small but nice and long." She also notes that "there is a nice path through the woods down to the reservoir."

Dump station locations: West Branch State Park Campground maintains year-round access to certain facilities. Andrea F. reports, "This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off" during off-season camping.

Site sizing limitations: At Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA, site dimensions may affect larger rigs. Scott C. notes, "The site was level and easy to hook up to," but other reviewers mention proximity between sites.
