Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Andover, OH

Pymatuning State Park Campground permits pets at designated sites with easy access to the lakefront, providing options for both tent and RV campers with dogs. Full hookup sites accommodate larger RVs while primitive tent sites offer more budget-friendly options for pet owners. Campsites feature picnic tables and fire rings where pets can relax alongside their owners. Jeffco Lakes Campground and Wildwood Acres also welcome pets with spacious, well-wooded sites that provide ample room for dogs to settle in comfortably. Most campgrounds in the area require pets to remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet when outside vehicles or camping units. Bathrooms and shower facilities are kept clean with workers constantly maintaining the grounds. Sites in wooded areas provide necessary shade for pets during summer months.

Hiking with dogs proves popular along Pymatuning Lake's shoreline where leashed pets can enjoy water access at several points. The Ohio side offers fewer dedicated hiking trails, but a short drive to the Pennsylvania section of Pymatuning provides additional pet-friendly trail options. Campers traveling with dogs should be prepared for wildlife encounters, particularly during dawn and dusk hours when deer and small mammals are active. Summer temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels for pets, so sites with adequate shade are recommended for camping with dogs between June and August. Pet owners particularly appreciate the pet-friendly accommodation options at Linesville and Jamestown campgrounds on the Pennsylvania side of Pymatuning, where cabins that allow dogs provide an alternative to tent camping during inclement weather.

    Outstanding site in great campground

Stayed on a premium patio site and loved it. The campground and staff were awesome. Level site, great hook ups, awesome WiFi and cable. Clean facilities, 3 lakes (one with a fishing pier), 2 dog parks, and super friendly staff. 30 min to Cleveland. Walmart, gas stations and restaurants within 5 miles. Just off Ohio Turnpike, but can't hear it. Definitely recommend this KOA

    Goddard Park Vacationland Campground

    Near Beautiful Lake Wilhelm

Nice park with very friendly staff. My only complaint is the sites are way too crowded. Also a little uneven. I love that this park is close to Lake Wilhelm & Goddard State Park for fishing and bike riding. 2 pools and a dog park.

    Family and pet friendly

OverLl great campground. The sites are a little close together but we still enjoyed our time there. Staff is super friendly and there was plenty for the kids to do, pool, arcade, fishing, and playground. Decent size dog park to let your dogs run and decent trails nearby.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    Great Site

My wife, 2 dogs, and I came with no reservation. They gave us a temporary tag to drive around and see what site we wanted. We ended up going to site 190 which had a decent amount of space to tent camp. The amenities were great. Clean shower and toilets in a well lit building.  There is also a dog park with a pond 2 minutes up the road which was great to wear the dogs out at. The only complaint I have is the site was a little close to our neighbor for our liking but we would go back!

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

    Great state park

Nice shower and bathrooms for a state park.

I didn't like that pets are not allowed in the non-pet area as that was where the playground and swimming beach was. Made it difficult to swim and play as a family since you can't leave dogs alone at the campsite. I wouldn't bring my dog next time to this campground. There are other more dog friendly places.

Very nice areas for walking, kayaking, swimming, and playground.

Guide to Andover

Pymatuning Lake spans 17,088 acres across the Ohio-Pennsylvania border with 70 miles of shoreline. This fishing paradise has numerous campgrounds catering to RVs, tent campers, and those with pets. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, with spring offering the highest water conditions and summer creating occasional shallow areas in coves.

What to do

Fishing for carp: At Linesville Campground, you can experience the unique "carp, carp and more carp" phenomenon. "The lake is fantastic for fishing. We have seen the most beautiful sunsets here that you won't see anywhere else. There is an eagles nest on one of the islands," according to AnnaMarie S.

Swimming options: Many campgrounds offer multiple water recreation choices. "A beautiful campground with plenty of things to do. Fishing, boating (nice docks), beach for swimming and various functions throughout the year," notes Robert H. from Jamestown Campground.

Biking trails: Geneva State Park connects to regional bike paths. "Great campground with bike trails leading all the way in to Geneva By the Lake where you will find entertainment for the family," writes Linda R., making it ideal for cyclists looking to explore beyond the campground.

What campers like

Spacious waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate the open sites with lake views. "Our site had a great view of the sunsets and the water!" reports Kevin E. at Linesville Campground, while another camper mentions "We stayed in section 2, site 82 which had a direct view of the lake and was close to the bathhouse and restroom."

Wildlife viewing: Jamestown Campground offers excellent bird watching opportunities. "The bald eagles sit in the trees not at all bothered by us. amazing," shares Mary M., highlighting the unique wildlife viewing potential in the area.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds around Andover maintain good standards. "Showers, restrooms and fish cleaning station are always clean," notes Chelsea K. about Linesville. At Jeffco Lakes Campground, "The campground is very clean and maintained."

What you should know

Train noise: Some campgrounds have nearby rail lines. At Jeffco Lakes, "There's also train tracks close by that blare the horn at all hours and for a longer duration than normal," warns Wyndie G.

Site selection matters: Not all waterfront sites provide direct lake access. "We booked a waterfront site and were disappointed to learn that was not actually the case. There was a little bit of a swampy area behind us but the lake was further away," cautions Casey L. at Jamestown Campground.

Limited hiking options: Unlike fishing amenities, hiking trails can be sparse. "Wish there were more hiking trails; unless you fish or boat, there isn't a lot to do," notes Mary S. about Pymatuning State Park. Some campers recommend bringing bikes for additional recreation.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Wildwood Acres Campground offers extensive recreation options. "Much to do for children.. pool 4'-12' w dive board, volleyball, backstop for ball w large field, large playground, basketball court, small game room w air hockey and pool table couple arcade games," details Joe F.

Consider site layout: Family-friendly campgrounds have practical layouts. "If you have younger kids, this site is for you. The playground is right there as is the beach," recommends Jennifer L., making it easier to supervise children.

Pet restrictions impact activities: Be aware that pet rules affect access. "I didn't like that pets are not allowed in the non-pet area as that was where the playground and swimming beach was. Made it difficult to swim and play as a family since you can't leave dogs alone at the campsite," explains Jeani B. from Jamestown Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Prepare leveling equipment for many area campgrounds. "The site was not level, but we were able to get the tent trailer level without too much effort," shares Leah L. about Jamestown Campground.

Camping sections vary: Pymatuning State Park has distinct camping areas with different characteristics. "There are 3 sections to camp. We stayed in section 2... We didnt look at section 1, but already decided next time, we will go to section 3 as that seemed more shaded and no playground," notes Jennifer L.

Laundry availability: For extended stays, some campgrounds offer laundry facilities. "The amenities are well kept with plenty of space, located in the center of the park. There is also a laundry," mentions Britt B. about Linesville Campground, a valuable amenity for dog-friendly campgrounds near Andover when traveling for longer periods.
