What to do
Elk viewing: 30-40 minute drive from Parker Dam State Park Campground to Benezette for remarkable wildlife encounters. "We loved it here!! First time here. Very spacious site with full hook up. #76 Next to camp host who were terrific. Deer came up to campsite every morning. Came to do some elk viewing. About 30-40 min drive to Benezette. Already booked for next year!!" writes Shirley M.
Disc golf course: Clear Creek State Park Campground offers a disc golf course and moderate hiking trails near the Clarion River. "Clear Creek State Park is an amazing little gem right outside of Cook Forest. Most of the campsites are right on the water, beautiful bridges, a great disc golf course, and moderate-to-light hiking trails," notes Caitlyn H.
Water recreation options: Most area campgrounds provide water activities during summer months. At Prince Gallitzin State Park, "Good trails, kayak rentals, and a private beach for the campgrounds make it a nice vacation spot," according to A.R. R. Some parks also offer rental equipment if you don't bring your own watercraft.
What campers like
Wildlife encounters: Campers regularly report close wildlife sightings at Cook Forest State Park Campground & Cabins. "Small campground just inside of the PA Wilds. Quiet low tea office campground. Sites are all paved and many overlapping with fire rings right on the line between sites. Research your site before reserving. Scenic Elk drive just north with high probability of spotting the majestic animal," Travis S. explains.
Rustic camping near water: Medix Run Camping Area offers primitive free sites with basic amenities. "Nice sit with fire pit, picnic table, and short walk to a beautiful creek so no need to bring water if you can filter it. Only 5-10 minutes away from Benezette and the PA elk herd. Town itself has a store and restaurants," reports Joann&WellsThePup I.
Peaceful atmosphere: Many campers value the quiet setting that allows for relaxation. "Quiet, peaceful campground. Great place for the entire family," says Ben S. about Parker Dam State Park Campground. At Medix Run, another camper noted "It was incredibly quiet, no cell service, and I couldn't hear any of the neighboring campsites even though they were all full."
What you should know
Variable site quality: At Crooked Run Campground — Prince Gallitzin State Park, "All sites are paved as are the roads. Bathrooms are fairly modern and clean. We take our dog so there is a restriction on where you can camp. Some sites are larger than others," explains Mark S.
Cell service limitations: Many campgrounds have limited connectivity. At Clear Creek State Park, "None of the major carriers have service here, but I needed to 'get away' for the night so it was perfect," notes Sara. At Medix Run, kallan confirms "no cell service (we use total wireless which uses Verizon towers)."
Weather preparedness: The region can experience rapid weather changes. "It rained almost every day but only for a half hour or so and went back to being sunny. Bring bug spray and tick collars for your pets," advises kallan about camping at Medix Run. Spring and fall can see significant temperature shifts between day and night.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Rvino - Campers Paradise offers dedicated family-friendly amenities. "There is a ton of things to do. Beautiful cabins," says Kemberly S. Another visitor added, "The playground is conveniently located. The swimming pool is always cold but feels great on a nice hot day."
Beach activities: Several campgrounds feature beach areas for family swimming. "We had a great Father Day weekend here. Great hiking trails, the beach is great for kids, good fishing, and close to the Benezette Elk Viewing Area," Kevin E. shares about Parker Dam State Park.
Educational opportunities: The region offers wildlife learning experiences for children. "This is also a great place to go year-round for kids interested in learning about nature. There is a nature museum. Seek out Ranger Susanne—she is a really great teacher!" recommends Laura C. regarding Clear Creek State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site research importance: Before booking, carefully research specific sites. At Simon B. Elliott State Park Campground, "SB Elliott SP is a tiny campground with quite a few flat places to take a stroll. The sites are decently sized for the size of the campground itself," explains Danielle S.
Leveling considerations: "Most of the spots will require leveling blocks," warns Isaac R. about Clear Creek State Park. Many campgrounds in the area have uneven terrain, particularly in more wooded sites.
Hookup availability: Gary P. notes about Cook Forest State Park, "Beautiful park with huge pine trees. 235 sites, many with electric. Most seem pretty level and big rig friendly. Good ATT & Verizon cell service." If full hookups are needed, verify site options before booking as they're limited at some parks.
