The campgrounds provide fire rings and picnic tables at each glamping site, with firewood available for purchase. Most properties remain open year-round, though amenities may be reduced during winter months. Sandy Point Resort Campground offers unique waterfront glamping with boat access to surrounding waterways. A visitor noted, "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River. North Bayshore Campground

Great place for enjoying the water!

This is a small family oriented campground close to Sandbridge beach. They are located on a small waterway that leads to Back Bay. Good fishing and wonderful area to kayak or paddle board. You can even bring a boat. The bathhouse is clean, climate controlled , and never too busy. There’s a game room for relaxing or playing air hockey, pool, and fussball. The owners have corn hole available as well. There’s a small swimming pool in case you want to take a dip although due to excessive rain the week before our trip it was closed for cleanup. There’s a basketball court and small playground. This is a low lying area and standing water at some sites after heavy rains can be an issue. There are a few cabins to rent, pop ups and a bunkhouse camper as well as full and water/elec. hookup RV sites, waterfront sites and tent sites. We’ve stayed here several times and the owners and employees are always very welcoming and accommodating. Pets are allowed on leash and our dogs love it!

      Chesapeake Campground

      Great local quiet spot!

I loved staying at this campground. It’s definitely geared towards locals and quiet stays, no campground events and things of that nature, but it’s perfect for someone not looking for the fluff. They do have two pools, basketball courts, kayak rentals, and I believe pony rides! They have a really nice climate controlled game room too. They are extremely fairly priced. They also have THE best campground bathrooms I have ever seen. Seems like they host a lot of events, club and troop weekends, things of that sort. I really enjoyed staying there and I will be back. Nice low key local spot for someone in the full time RV life or needing an affordable quiet place to stay while in the area.

      Sandy Bottom Nature Park

      Nature in the County

Sites: 11 primitive tent sites 2 of which are group sites

4 tent cabins that sit right on the edge of the lake

The individual campsites are FCFS and you must park and hike in. It is a short hike along the lake and placed a short distance from the trail so hikers will not be hiking through the sites. You have a sand bottom tent site, picnic table, fire ring/grill and trash. This is a beautiful 456 acre education and wildlife facility. Born from garbage dumps and it is great example of what can be achieved. This really is a great site.  There is an amazing nature center that overlooks Sandy Bottom Lake. Hiking, and biking trails, fishing, boating with boat rentals or bring your own, birding and wildlife viewing. 757-825-4657

      Sandy Bottom Nature Park

A great place to hike and camp if you can't get out of the area

The park is centrally located with easy highway access.  Plentiful parking, lots of trails to choose from.  The staff was top notch and super kind and helpful.  They were very insistent about the "no alcohol" rule.

Sites are first come, first served.  Must reserve in person.  Visitor's center is open 9-6.

The sites were located about 1/4 mile from the parking lot down a trail.  They were spaced nicely apart and had nice sand tent platforms with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grate.  Trash cans were very close by, which was super nice.  The bathrooms were flush toilets and running water faucets and located behind the parking lot, so a bit of a hike in the dark if you need to go.  Other than that, expect no amenities.  Bugs weren't terrible but were present.  Definitely bring bug spray.

The biggest negative was that no matter where you were in the park, there was significant noise from the highway.  Horns honking, sirens blaring, the general rush of cars going by.  There is no sound barrier between 64 and the park so every noise just filters right through the trees.  Not anyone's fault, but definitely a downside.

Overall when you consider the dirt cheap price of 10.60 per night, this campground delivers as advertised.

      Northwest River Park & Campground

      Simple in the South

Its nothing fancy. Good place for a natture hike, campfire amd one night tent camping. Plan on bringing your own water as there isn’t always running water (not sure why).

      Blackwater Birds and Bees

      Wonderful and peaceful trip!

What a great camp! A small family farm with 5 sites around the property. We chose site 2 for our family of three and a dog and it was the perfect size. The hosts were so friendly, and we were able to walk around and see the chicken coop, small lake, and barnyard with goats and geese. The campsites are great (about a 5 min walk apart), with a fire pit, picnic table, trash, and ours had a set up for a hammock. Even with what it looked like every campsite full, it was peaceful and pretty. Our toddler had a blast! They are a working farm so it was fun to have the option to buy eggs, herbs or wine. We picked up a t-shirt on the way out and will be back for the troller :)

      North Landing Beach

      Wonderful experience

Over 2021 spring break I wanted to introduce my 2 granddaughters to camping. But at only 4 and 5 I thought it best to ease them in by renting a cabin but still have the camp atmosphere. This location was PERFECT! It warmed up enough to enjoy the beach which was a 5 minute walk from cabin. Both nights we warmed by the outside campfire and I introduced them to my childhood favorite: S'MORES!!! They didn't want to leave and talked about it for weeks!

Nice spot to get away for a night or 2

we crashed out at the spot just to get away for a couple dates and it fit the bill. We pitched a tent and let a campfire and had a good weekend

Excellent family run campground close to Sandbridge beach

Wonderful spot away from crowds but close to beach. Tent, RV or “ tiny cabin” options. Clean, quiet and pretty. Canal runs around campground that gives you access to Back Bay. Pool and playground. Small store. Super friendly staff. Love it there. 5 minute drive to Sandbridge. 15 to Va Beach strip. Level ground but water collects with heavy rains- to be expected at he beach.

I think pets are OK. Good showers.

    Guide to Gatesville

Glamping accommodations near Gatesville, North Carolina can be found within a 45-mile radius, primarily in neighboring Virginia. The region sits within the Inner Coastal Plain, characterized by low elevations averaging 10-20 feet above sea level with mild winters and humid summers. Campers should note that many sites can become temporarily waterlogged during heavy rainfall due to the region's natural drainage patterns and flat terrain.

    What to do

Kayaking on interconnected waterways: Rocky Hock Campground provides direct water access to the Chowan River system. "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River. Large fishing pond, firewood available, clean shower house, game room and tidy clean sites," notes Kathleen from Rocky Hock.

Fishing opportunities: Sandy Point Resort Campground offers both freshwater and brackish water fishing options. "We arrived not sure of where to camp and this lovely guy named Steve who wasn't even an employee showed us a good place to camp and made us a fire. The sunset is beautiful!" shares Sofia S.

Swimming and water activities: North Landing Beach maintains dedicated swimming areas with safety measures in place. "We enjoyed the pool, kayaking & the activities. If you have a small boat or jet skiis, you are guaranteed to have a blast!" notes Chris E., highlighting multiple water recreation options.

Nature trails and wildlife viewing: Seasonal bird watching is popular throughout the region, especially at waterfront locations. "The grounds are immaculate, sites are level and very well designed for optimal privacy. This property has many perks: dog friendly and has space to exercise your furbabies, boat ramp to explore the surrounding waterways," reports Barbara W. from Rocky Hock Campground.

    What campers like

Clean, accessible bathroom facilities: Most established campgrounds maintain well-maintained shower houses. "Very clean campground surrounding a couple of small lakes. We had a personal guide to show us the location of our campsite. Campsites had wood decks which would be nice in warmer weather," explains Seth P. from Davis Lakes Resort.

Lakefront sites: Premium waterfront sites offer direct access to fishing, kayaking, and sunset views. "We had a great time and enjoyed our stop here. Our site had a great view of the water and we could see the Currituck lighthouse at night. Our boys enjoyed kayaking around the sound and riding their bikes to the playground," states Stephen B. from Outer Banks West.

Year-round accessibility: Many campgrounds operate during all seasons with varying amenity availability. "Wanted to try out a new tent in the snow, was the only camper, and had a huge plot to myself. All RVers were polite and kept to themselves and were quiet. Very clean bathrooms with showers in each," mentions William P. from Rocky Hock Campground.

Community atmosphere: Several campgrounds host regular events and maintain common areas. "The camp grounds have RV sites and cabins but no tent camping. We have stayed several times as my son and his family live in the area. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. There is a lake with a swimming area and a snack bar in summer," shares Leslie R. about Davis Lakes Resort.

    What you should know

Seasonal insect considerations: Waterfront locations can experience heavy insect activity, particularly during summer evenings. "Close to highway but reasonably quiet at night," notes Seth P. about Davis Lakes Resort, though other reviewers mention bug issues at waterfront locations during peak summer months.

Weather impacts: Low-lying areas may experience flooding during heavy rain events. "This is a low lying area and standing water at some sites after heavy rains can be an issue," explains Tina C. from North Bayshore Campground.

Varying Wi-Fi reliability: Internet connectivity varies significantly between properties. "The only reason that it doesn't get 5 stars is the WiFi was very limited," mentions Scott S. about his stay at Davis Lakes Resort.

Seasonal amenity changes: Off-season visitors should check which facilities remain open. "Gaming room available, although it seemed 'closed' for the off-season," notes William P. about Rocky Hock Campground's winter operations.

    Tips for camping with families

Multiple recreation options: Look for campgrounds with diverse activities to keep children engaged. "Northwest River Park & Campground does a great job with events and education! Equestrian trails available, which is always a plus," shares Elizabeth V.

Kid-friendly water features: Properties with designated swimming areas provide safer water recreation options. "There were a lot of child friendly activities to do here. The showers were nice and the bathrooms were very clean. The camp store is great. It has ice cream, which my kids loved," reports Audriana V. about Chesapeake Campground.

Playground access: Several properties maintain playground equipment for children. "We kayaked around the sound and riding their bikes to the playground. It seemed like they are working to add more amenities and upgrades," notes Stephen B. about his family's experience.

Quiet hours enforcement: Check each campground's policy on quiet hours to ensure a good night's sleep. "The park was very quiet going into the night," confirms Joseph H. from Northwest River Park & Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Many sites require minimal leveling equipment. "The sites are gravel and mostly level but I did have to use a couple blocks of my levelers," shares Sheri K. from Sandy Bottom Nature Park.

Hookup variations: Verify specific hookup configurations when booking. "We have family in Edenton and have stayed at Rocky Hock many times. It is just north of town and has large mostly pull through sites with full hookups," explains Kevin A.

Off-season considerations: Winter campers should verify which amenities remain operational. "There are no amenities in the fall and winter but in the summer there is a lake with a swimming area and a snack bar. The fishing is year round," advises Leslie R. about Davis Lakes Resort.

Site spacing and privacy: Site layouts and privacy levels vary significantly between properties. "The sites are spacious and level. The staff have been nice and we have had no issues. They also have a lake, allow fishing and small boats," explains Paul R. from Rocky Hock Campground.
