A working farm along the Blackwater River sets the stage at Blackwater Birds and Bees, a Tentrr-managed property outside Wakefield, Virginia with five dispersed sites spread across forested and open land. Sites sit far enough apart that even when the campground runs at capacity, the spacing holds. The Blackwater River runs along the property, giving campers direct water access from their sites for swimming, fishing, and putting in kayaks or canoes, which the hosts make available on loan.
The farm itself is part of the experience. Goats, geese, and chickens share the property, and a pond, blueberry patch, and apiary round out the grounds. Hosts have left honey samples and wildflowers on arrival for some guests, and the on-site farm store stocks homemade wine, eggs, and herbs. Bathrooms include flushing toilets and reviewers consistently note they are kept clean. Cell service is available, and drinking water is provided at the site. One practical note: the access road can be disorienting after dark, and the hosts recommend following their directions closely.
"Bathrooms were very clean and just a short walk from the site," notes Kat H., who also kayaked both the pond and the river during her stay. Rates run $25 to $48 per night, pets are welcome, and the campground operates year-round. Anglers and paddlers tend to get the most out of this site given the river access. Campers wanting a more developed setting can look at Isle of Wight Family Campground or browse places to camp around Wakefield for other options in the area.
Description
Backcountry site, pitch your own tent! Very secluded site, on a ridge, overlooking the Blackwater river. Set up your tents under huge old beech and oak trees while you enjoy a beautiful view of one of Virginia's only designated scenic waterways. We really try to encourage visitors to explore the property and get a glimpse of some the spectacular wildlife that's here. We are a developing farm that started in 2016 so, we will have a variety of produce available, along with eggs and honey.
