Military history: The former naval training facility at Sampson State Park offers historical exhibits. "It was a Naval training base during WWll. About 45 minutes from Rochester and about hr and half from Syracuse. It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era," notes Brian O.

Spacious lakefront sites: Campers appreciate the room between sites at waterfront locations. "We stayed in the 800 loop along the tree line. Sites were very spacious! Great camping location with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy or just sit and enjoy the peace," writes Colleen M. from Cayuga Lake State Park Campground.
Swimming areas: Many parks offer designated swimming spots during summer months. "Large tent and rv sites most with electric. Potable water fill station and dump tanks at entrance/exit. Great little beach and swimming area; water was very clean," shares Stephanie C.
Family-friendly layouts: Campground designs often cater to families with children. "Kids activities are great. Even with COVID they have stuff to keep them busy. Large wooded sites are our favorite as well," says Victoria from Lake Bluff RV Park.
What you should know
Seasonal availability: Most cabin facilities operate from mid-April through mid-October. "We stayed over Labor Day weekend and ended up leaving a day early due to sewage smells from the leech fields, an insane amount of mosquitos, and rude staff," cautions Alicia O. about one property.
Varying shower conditions: Bathroom facilities differ widely between campgrounds. "The bathrooms are great with showers and each camp spot has plenty of distance away from the next one," notes Kate W. about Sampson State Park.
Site privacy levels: Tree cover varies significantly between locations. "This was a perfect weekend getaway. Kayaking in Cayuga Lake was not lacking some beautiful views. The sites are slightly close together but everyone was incredibly respectful and quiet by 10pm," reports Laura Nicole A.
Reservation requirements: Summer weekends typically require advance bookings at most cabin locations. "Very weird layout of the area. Not much to do. Seasonals are a little rude," advises Katarina M. about Junius Ponds.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Many campgrounds offer recreation areas for children. "Near the play ground they have a nice game room pool, air hockey, video games. There is a change machine too," shares Sara H.
Water activities: Lakes provide swimming options during summer. "Swimming in Cayuga Lake was not lacking some beautiful views. It was a peaceful and relaxing stay," notes Laura Nicole A.
Trail difficulty considerations: Some hiking paths work better for children than others. "We stayed only one night at this park but wish we could have stayed longer as there seems to be quite a bit to enjoy here. HIGHLIGHTS: Swimming, Fishing, Kayak or canoe launch pad, Large playground," explains Amanda K.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Some campgrounds have limited space for larger RVs. "Our site was very clean and was well equipped with a fire ring picnic table and a restroom nearby. The night is very quiet and and a nice breeze," reports Kevin T.
Hookup locations: Power connections may require longer cords at some sites. "Well maintained and friendly staff. Clean facilities. Most sites can accommodate large rigs with full hookups. Reservations recommended especially during summer weekends," advises Jim C. from Sned Acres Campground.
Road conditions: Interior campground roads vary in width and accessibility. "The roads are narrow and hilly, but we pull a 36' 5th wheel (mid-profile) and we had no issues with branches. They had a oversized, long pull through available (site 88) that made entering and exiting the site nice and easy," explains Kristine B.
