Sampson State Park Campground operates on the grounds of a former World War II naval training base, with 245 sites spread across multiple loops on Seneca Lake's eastern shore. The campground requires reservations and charges $15-24 per night depending on the site, with electric hookups available at most locations. All sites are back-in only, and RVs up to 35 feet can be accommodated.
The property retains much of its military layout, with wide paved roads connecting five main camping loops. "Lots of mature trees shade most of the sites," notes Gary J., though Loop 5 offers more open terrain with direct lake views. Sites 222, 224, 226, 228, 230, and 232 sit directly on the water. Electric pedestals are shared between adjacent sites and positioned up to 30 feet from some camping pads, so campers should bring extension cords or rent them from the on-site store.
The campground provides direct access to Seneca Lake through a guarded swimming beach and boat launch. A marina store rents pontoon boats and kayaks, while a separate concession stand serves hot food and ice cream. Over five miles of paved and unpaved trails wind through the property, connecting to playgrounds and a naval museum. Evening activities include outdoor movies and arcade games. Campers consistently praise the facility cleanliness, with bathhouses featuring dish-washing stations and hot showers.
Water fill stations and dump stations are located at the campground entrance, creating potential bottlenecks during busy periods. The property fills quickly during summer months, particularly sites with lake views. stephanie C. found "bathrooms were very clean and had dish washing stations in them." Cell service varies by location, and some campers report rough access roads after rain. The campground works well for families seeking lake access and RV campers who don't mind backing into sites.
