Welcome to Batona Campground in Wharton State Forest, nestled near Egg Harbor City, NJ. This spot is a gem for those who love a bit of rustic charm. The campground is open from April 1 to October 31, making it a great seasonal retreat.

Batona Campground is perfect for tent campers and small RVs. The sites are designated and reservable, so make sure you book ahead. Each site comes with a fire pit, but don't expect picnic tables or electric hookups. The campground has a couple of pit toilets and a hand-pumped water source, which adds to the old-school camping vibe. Just remember, the water pump is shut off in the winter.

One of the best features of this campground is its direct access to the Batona Trail, a 50-mile stretch that's a hiker's dream. Whether you're up for a short stroll or a long trek, the trailheads start right from the campsites. The surrounding pine barrens are a beautiful backdrop, and you might even catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, including the legendary Jersey Devil if you're lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective).

Visitors have noted that the road into the campground is a mile of loose sand, but it's manageable with a standard vehicle. The sites are somewhat close together, but the abundance of outdoor activities means you won't be spending much time at your campsite during the day. From hiking and canoeing to exploring the abandoned Atsion Village, there's plenty to keep you busy.

So, pack your gear, make a reservation, and get ready to enjoy the simple pleasures of camping at Batona Campground. Just remember to practice proper food storage—bears are known to frequent the area. Happy camping!
