St. Michaels, Maryland offers several tent camping options in the surrounding Chesapeake Bay region. Sandy Point State Park Youth Group Camping, located approximately 26 miles northwest near Annapolis, provides tent-only sites with beach access to the Chesapeake Bay. Calvert Cliffs State Park Youth Group Camping, situated about 50 miles south, offers primitive tent camping opportunities with multiple access types including hike-in, walk-in, and drive-in options. Both parks operate seasonally, typically from March through October.

Most tent campgrounds in the area provide basic amenities suited for primitive tent camping. Sandy Point features drinking water, picnic tables, showers, and toilets, while sites at Calvert Cliffs include drinking water, picnic tables, and toilets but no showers. Fire rings are available at both locations, though campers should verify current fire regulations before arrival. The terrain typically consists of flat, grassy areas with some tree cover for shade. Many sites require reservations, particularly during peak summer months when the region experiences high humidity and occasional thunderstorms.

The tent camping experience near St. Michaels provides unique access to the Chesapeake Bay's natural environment. Tent campers at Sandy Point can enjoy swimming beaches, fishing opportunities, and hiking trails. At Calvert Cliffs, the mile-long trail leading to the beach offers excellent fossil hunting, especially for shark teeth. The proximity to water provides cooling breezes during summer months but also brings mosquitoes and biting flies. A reviewer on The Dyrt noted about Calvert Cliffs: "It is a very nice walk about 2 miles to the beach where you can hunt for fossils. The beach has gotten smaller over the years however the trail has gotten much better." Weekdays typically offer more solitude than weekends, when sites can fill quickly, particularly at Sandy Point which tends to become "extremely overcrowded in the summer."

      Redden State Forest Campground

Quiet primitive campsites with slight road noise. We didn’t hear any train during our stay. We stayed at site 10 on the left branch where the newer gravel tent sites are in the pines. The potalet is nearby. It’s was dark at our campsite when we arrived. Nice and level gravel pad with plenty of room - sites are large enough to pull into and k turn if needed (although we saw the sign saying to park parallel to the site entrance in the morning- we have a roof top tent on our vehicle). When I put my headlamp on there were all these tiny sparkles on the ground out among the pine trees surrounding our campsite. When I walked up really close to one and shined my lamp on it, I saw that they are pretty big spiders. A little unnerving but also pretty? Told my brain I was in a glittery fairy forest and slept fine. 🤣

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

    What to do

Fossil hunting along beaches: At Matoaka Beach Cottages, tent campers can explore the shoreline for fossils. "We tent camped at Matoka Cabins and it was a beautiful Peaceful camping trip! Out spot was very private and you could see the bay and hear the waves," reports Courtney K.

Kayaking on the Patapsco River: Patapsco Valley State Park offers water recreation options. "Roland Lake in Baltimore County is a great place to kayak on the Patapsco River. Tons of wildlife, facilities, and amenities for you and your family," notes Anthony S.

Crabbing from piers: Endeavor Point provides direct water access for crabbing enthusiasts. "The pier was perfect to fish or crab off of and the beach had great views of the sunrise," according to Ally S.

    What campers like

Private beach access: Tent campers at Matoaka Beach Cottages appreciate the secluded waterfront locations. Michael notes, "I just showed up and got a perfect camp spot with a view of the sunrise and access to the private beach."

Child-friendly facilities: Many families choose Patapsco Valley State Park for its recreational amenities. "The Hilton entrance of Patapsco Valley Park is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park," writes Angel G.

Seasonal wildlife viewing: Birdwatchers find opportunities at Endeavor Point to observe marsh species. "We had a nice stay overlooking the marsh. The small crabs were skittering around the campsite and birds perched in the marsh," shares Caleb S.

    What you should know

Military camping restrictions: The Military Park United States Naval Academy/Annapolis Naval Station Annapolis FamCamp requires proper military ID for access. "Military campground. Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap," notes Ginny L.

Campground crowding issues: Multiple campgrounds near St. Michaels experience significant crowding during peak seasons. "Extremely over crowded in the summer. The park closes daily very early as it hits capacity," Tony P. cautions about Sandy Point.

Primitive facilities: Most tent camping sites offer basic amenities only. At Redden State Forest Campground, "There is no water, no electric, no bathroom. This is primitive camping/boondocking. This is a 'leave no trace, carry in/carry out' facility," explains BA K.

    Tips for camping with families

Nature programming options: Several campgrounds feature educational opportunities for children. "There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park. The nature center was closed when we visited, but the kids still enjoyed the sensory trail and playground," shares Angel G. about Patapsco Valley State Park.

Jellyfish awareness: Parents should check seasonal water conditions before planning swimming activities. "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!" warns Angel G. about Sandy Point.

Consider timing for fossil hunting: Plan beach activities during low tide. "My family and I have been coming to Sandy Point my entire life. It is a great little spot on the Chesapeake river. Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth," notes Angel G.

    Tips from RVers

Size restrictions apply: Most campgrounds near St. Michaels limit RV size and access. At Redden State Forest Campground, "Travel trailers, pull behinds, motorhomes are not allowed. Tents, cars, overlander SUVs, minivans and small Class B camper vans are allowed. Nothing over 25 ft allowed," according to BA K.

Limited hookups available: Lacy Oasis Campground provides primitive sites without standard RV connections. Terrance D. reports, "The rates are very economical for what is being provided on the space."

Self-check-in procedures: Many smaller campgrounds use honor systems for payment and access. At Redden State Forest, "The gate system was a little strange and what previous reviewers had written was helpful because everything is pretty much done as self check in with no one to really ask questions to," explains Andrew.
