Several RV parks near Crofton provide full hookup options for motorhomes and travel trailers. Cherry Hill Park in College Park features 50-amp service, sewer connections, and water hookups on level pull-through sites with paved pads. "Sites are level pull-thru with picnic table on a paver patio, clean gravel surface, grill, and fire pit," noted one camper about their experience at Cherry Hill. Camp Meade RV Park in Laurel accommodates big rigs with 50-amp electrical service, while Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina in Abingdon offers 91 sites with full hookups, including both 30-amp and 50-amp options. Prince William Forest RV Campground provides electric, water, and sewer hookups on drive-in sites that can be tight for larger rigs.

Advance reservations are essential during peak seasons, particularly for waterfront sites at Bar Harbor RV Park where the premium locations fill quickly. Most parks maintain year-round operations, though amenities like swimming pools typically close during winter months. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with Cherry Hill offering strong connectivity while more wooded areas may have limited reception. Dump stations are available at all major RV parks, with some offering on-site propane fill services. Pet policies differ between facilities—most allow pets but enforce leash requirements and designated walking areas. Navigation to some parks requires careful planning, as Bar Harbor RV Park requires driving through residential neighborhoods that can be challenging for larger motorhomes.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Redemption Springs

      Pleasant Stay and Hosts

We stayed at Redemption Springs to get relatively close to Baltimore without bringing our 30ft travel trailer into the city. Seth and the other gentlemen I spoke with were all extremely accommodating. Enjoyed learning about their approach to restorative farming and purchasing a variety of treats at the farm store. Beef, pork, chicken, seasonings, baked goods, and more. We booked on Hipcamp and recommend following his driving instructions. Our rig fit fine by tuhe main barn and they kept an eye on us going in and out to make sure we didn't have issues making any of the turns. Lots of farm life!

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

    Guide to Crofton

The Crofton area provides camping options ranging from urban-adjacent sites to waterfront locations within a 30-mile radius. Most campgrounds remain accessible year-round with seasonal temperature fluctuations typical of the Mid-Atlantic region. The area sits at elevations below 300 feet and features a mix of wooded terrain and waterfront access points that appeal to different camping styles.

    What to do

Explore historic sites: Prince William Forest RV Campground offers access to Prince William Forest National Park with significant historic features. "Civil War National Parks nearby. DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," notes one visitor describing the area's historical attractions.

Water activities: Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina provides direct water access with kayaking and fishing opportunities. "If you like boating, kayaking or canoeing, this is the place! Had our kayaks with us and the water wasn't but a few steps away. Some sites you are right on the waters edge," shares one camper about the waterfront options.

Trail systems: The regional parks feature extensive trail networks for hiking and biking. Hollofield Area Campground sits within Patapsco Valley State Park which offers "70 miles of hiking/biking/multi use trails" according to a reviewer who adds "there are parks on both sides of the river to explore and experience the trails."

    What campers like

Convenient DC access: Greenbelt Park Campground provides an affordable base for Washington DC exploration. "There are two stations very close to camp (Greenbelt and University Park). Rides vary depending on how far you are going but on average I spent about $10 per day on METRO versus $20-$40 on parking in the district," reports one camper.

Military facilities: Service members can access dedicated facilities with unique amenities. Fort Belvoir Travel Camp features "very clean and great Potomac River views" with opportunities to "explore the Potomac river. There is a pier out into the river to fish on. The outdoor recreation center has bait, snacks, and drinks."

Family amenities: Several campgrounds near Crofton focus on family activities. Bull Run Regional Park offers structured recreation opportunities as one camper describes: "The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish."

    What you should know

Varied privacy levels: Site spacing differs significantly between parks. At Bull Run Regional Park, "the sites are all pull-through off the roads through the campground. So your camper faces the woods and you feel like you're all alone," while at others, sites can be very close together.

Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts amenities and access. At Bar Harbor RV Park, campers are "told to turn off and unhook water the night it dropped below freezing," a common winter requirement at rv parks around Crofton, Maryland.

Reservation requirements: Many parks require advance online booking. One Greenbelt Park visitor notes it's "a NO CASH facility which means you CANNOT pay upon arrival so you will have to do so online."

Noise factors: Despite wooded settings, some campgrounds experience noise. At Bull Run, a visitor warns, "There is a shooting range in the park. It is on a flight path for DCA. And, I66 is not that far away."

    Tips for camping with families

Explore free attractions: When staying at campgrounds near Crofton, Maryland, take advantage of nearby museums. A Greenbelt Park camper recommends: "You can spend entire days at the always-free Smithsonian museums and still fall asleep in the woods."

Consider specialized programs: Some parks offer structured activities for children. At Cherry Hill Park, one visitor mentions "nightly hayride" among the family amenities, while others highlight the "playground, mini golf, swimming pool, splash pad" as kid-friendly features.

Find educational opportunities: Several parks incorporate nature education. Bull Run offers "nature scavenger hunt" activities that can engage children while teaching them about local ecosystems.

    Tips from RVers

Bridge clearance: Some rv parks near Crofton have access restrictions. When approaching Hollofield Area Campground, "approach this park ONLY FROM THE WEST if your vehicle is over 11 feet high. There is a 11' bridge coming east bound into this park."

Leveling requirements: Site conditions vary across campgrounds. At Fort Belvoir, a visitor advises "bring plenty of leveling blocks" noting that "our site wasn't fully level."

Navigation challenges: Several rv parks require careful driving. Bar Harbor RV Park requires driving "through a residential neighborhood to reach Bar Harbor, so big rigs take care/caution," while Prince William Forest has "sites that can be tight for larger rigs."
