The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park offers several tent-only camping options within 15 miles of Braddock Heights, Maryland. Antietam Creek Campground provides walk-in tent sites along the Potomac River, with a season running from May 1 to October 1. Annapolis Rock Campground, located along the Appalachian Trail at 1700 feet elevation, offers primitive tent camping with basic amenities and spectacular overlook views. Gathland State Park Campground and Washington Monument State Park Campground both feature hike-in tent sites within a short drive from Braddock Heights, with the latter operating from April 1 to October 30.

Most tent campsites in the region require some walking to access, ranging from 75 feet at Antietam Creek to a mile or more for backcountry locations. Sites typically include fire rings, picnic tables, and access to vault toilets or portable facilities. Water availability varies significantly, with many locations offering only non-potable water that requires treatment or boiling. Campers should prepare to pack out all trash, as collection facilities are limited. The terrain at most sites consists of natural surfaces with minimal grading, and some locations like Leopards Mill have limited flat areas for pitching tents. Weather considerations are important, as lower-elevation sites can become muddy after rain.

According to reviews, the C&O Canal hiker-biker campsites provide varying experiences for tent campers. One visitor noted that Antietam Creek requires parking on the road and walking across a field to reach the campsite, making gear transport challenging. The sites are described as "fully or mostly shaded" with good river access. Another camper reported that despite proximity to a road, the riverside location made it "worth it." Train noise affects some locations, with a reviewer recommending earplugs for light sleepers at certain campgrounds. Wildlife sightings are common, with campers mentioning encounters with deer, owls, wild turkeys, and even evidence of bears in the region. Most backcountry tent sites maintain good separation between campsites, providing privacy even when campgrounds are full.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      The Cove Campground

      Excellent Campground

Was looking for a last-minute getaway on a busy weekend, and they seemed the best option.  I've always associated private campgrounds with crowding and sites on top of each other.  I couldn't have been more wrong about The Cove.  There is more wooded space between sites than in many National Parks.

Some sections are best accessed via 4WD, which I think is a great way to keep things from getting too crowded.

Such a huge diversity of types of sites, from lakeside to wooded, to open fields.  They have something for everyone.

The bathrooms are ok.  Other than the shower area and the reception, most toilets are pit toilets.  If you want to be walking distance to showers, make sure to book sites near them.  For most sites, it's going to be a hike or a drive.

And on top of that, they have a beach for the kids, boat rentals, and a range.

This was our first visit, but we will definitely be coming back.

      Hosack Run

Quiet & Dog friendly - 20minutes from Gettysburg Battfields

This pet friendly campground in Caledonia State Park is .8 miles from the larger Chinquapin campground (no pets), ranger station and swimming pool. Our site #171 was level, paved, full hook ups and next to modern clean bathrooms with flush toilets, warm showers and outside dish washing sinks. Many available sites with and without services on a Sunday in October. There were a good number of friendly, tidy, long term campers with large wall tents. (They allow 21 day stays after Labor Day)

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

    Guide to Braddock Heights

Tent camping near Braddock Heights, Maryland offers backpackers and hikers access to several primitive camping areas along the Appalachian Trail corridor and C&O Canal. These campsites typically sit between 400-1700 feet elevation, with seasonal availability affecting water access and trail conditions. Most backcountry camping areas experience temperature variations of 10-15 degrees from surrounding urban areas due to elevation and tree cover.

    What to do

Tube the Potomac River: Antietam Creek Campground provides direct access to the Potomac for water activities. "The Potomac is mostly flat with some 'swirlies' for experienced paddlers. I also saw some people tubing," notes one Antietam Creek Campground visitor.

Rock climbing at elevation: The 1700-foot elevation at Annapolis Rock Campground offers technical climbing opportunities. "The best part is the Annapolis Rock cliffs. They offer beautiful views and all kinds of single pitch rock climbing," according to a camper who visited the site.

Visit nearby attractions: Many campsites serve as basecamps for historic sites. "Pretty standard campground—the perks are its location to nearby attractions and the river/creek. It depends on what you're looking for—easy camping and proximity to Antietam and Harper's? Golden," reports an Antietam Creek visitor.

    What campers like

Potable water access: Unlike many primitive sites, some locations offer treated water. "Spring and compost outhouse. Great views. Been camping there for decades," mentions a camper at Annapolis Rock Campground.

Trail-accessible showers: A rare backcountry amenity appreciated by through-hikers. "I only stopped here for a night while I was hiking the AT, but it was a welcome relief to get to a spot where I could wash off and have indoor plumbing for a night," shares a hiker about Dahlgren Backpacker Campground.

Swimming opportunities: Natural water access provides cooling options. "Want to rinse off? Jump into the Potomac for a swim," suggests a visitor to Jordan Junction Hiker-biker Campsite.

    What you should know

Pack-in requirements: Distance from parking varies considerably between sites. "You have to park on the road and walk about 75 feet to your site. Not much traffic on that road and a trail with many cyclists and runners," explains a camper at Antietam Creek Campground.

Wildlife considerations: Snake encounters are possible at rocky sites. "Be careful for the copperheads that come warm up on the rocky overlook," warns a visitor to Annapolis Rock Campground.

Noise factors: Train and road noise affect some locations. "I will say there is a road right by the camp is and there are consistent levels of cars into the evening. Still worth it," reports a camper at Antietam Creek Campground.

Fire restrictions: Several sites prohibit campfires due to conservation efforts. "Great primitive campsite that has undergone major restorations and preventative measures to reverse the damage from huge camping crowds of the past. No fires," states a camper at Gathland State Park Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection for groups: Families should seek less crowded options. "Tons of open spaces for tents, and sites are spaced far apart. This property also offers glamping experiences and sometimes live music. Bring the family (and the dog) to enjoy this gorgeous property," suggests a visitor to Mulehalla.

Consider water access challenges: River access may require navigation of steep paths. "Site 11 which had its own path down to the Potomac River. It was quite steep for my bum knees and ankles, but I saw kids easily run up and down it," shares an Antietam Creek camper.

Pack-in preparation: Parents should plan for carrying gear varying distances. "It's also a weird setup with respect to parking—as you have to park on the opposite side of the canal and walk to your campsite. If you got one close to the bridge over the canal then you're 100ft from the car, but if not then it could be a little bit of a walk," explains a visitor to Antietam Creek.

    Tips for RVers

Limited RV options: The area primarily supports tent camping with minimal vehicle access. "This is a stop on the AT open only to multi-day backpackers. I've heard it is sometimes enforced," cautions a visitor about Dahlgren Backpacker Campground.

Alternative accommodations: Consider nearby glamping options if traditional RV camping isn't available. "This property also offers glamping experiences and sometimes live music," notes a Opequon Junction visitor describing alternatives to standard RV camping.

Day-use access: RV travelers can park at day-use areas and hike to primitive sites. "Gorgeous spot just off the trail and 50 meters from the Potomac," shares a camper at Opequon Junction, indicating the short distance from parking areas.
