Tent campers exploring the region surrounding Sparrows Point, Maryland have access to several established campgrounds within a reasonable driving distance. Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offers tent camping with non-electric sites in a wooded setting approximately 10 miles west of Sparrows Point. Another option is Hart-Miller Island State Park, which provides primitive tent camping accessible only by boat. Sandy Point State Park offers youth group tent camping from March through October along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline.

Most tent sites in the area feature crushed stone or dirt surfaces with fire rings and picnic tables. Patapsco Valley's tent sites are set on crushed stone pads that can be challenging for tent setup, as one camper noted they "won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent." Several campgrounds have potable water and toilet facilities, though amenities vary significantly between locations. Hart-Miller Island offers more primitive conditions with vault toilets but no showers. Weather considerations are important, as heavy rainfall can impact lower-elevation sites, particularly in Patapsco Valley where campers report significant water flow through the grounds during storms.

The tent camping experience near Sparrows Point provides access to hiking trails, water recreation, and nature observation opportunities. Patapsco Valley State Park features numerous hiking trails through forested terrain with some sites situated in valley areas. The park includes both a large playground near the entrance and a smaller one within the campground loop. For those seeking more seclusion, Swains Lock Hiker-biker Overnight Campsite along the C&O Canal offers free tent camping with designated sites featuring fire rings and picnic tables. According to a reviewer, "There are 5 sites that are first come, first serve across from a day use area. A short drive away from DC and it couldn't be easier to get to: park in a lot and walk about 500ft down to the campgrounds."

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

      Lums Pond State Park Campground

      Lums Pond campground

First time at this campground really like it a lot will be returning. The bathrooms are always clean. The grounds are always kept up. Just a really nice place to stay. Most of the sites have some kind of shade.

      Bay Shore Campground

      Fred’s bay shore

One of our favorite places. Very well kept. No bathhouse so bring your own. A lot of shady sites. Great views of Chesapeake bay. Flat roads in the area for cycling.

    What to do

Kayaking on the Patapsco River: Roland Lake in Baltimore County connects to the Patapsco River offering paddling opportunities near Sparrows Point. According to a visitor at Patapsco Valley State Park, "Tons of wildlife, facilities, and amenities for you and your family. The park was clean and it had knowledgable staff."

Fossil hunting for sharks teeth: The shoreline areas provide unique opportunities for paleontology enthusiasts. At Sandy Point State Park, campers note this popular activity: "Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth. In late spring while school is still in session" is the best time according to reviewers.

Wildlife observation at Conowingo Dam: Eagles and other birds congregate near the dam, accessible by bike trail from Susquehannock State Park. "There's a great bike trail to the Conowingo dam which is a nice place to visit, and a great place to see lots of eagles. There are amazing wildflowers on that trail."

Hiking forest trails: Multiple parks offer trail networks with varying difficulty levels. At Susquehannock State Park, hikers find "lots of long scenic hiking trails down to Deer creek and to the Susquehanna River" with some trails featuring "two amazing specimen trees."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: The best tent camping near Sparrows Point offers separation between campers. At Blackbird State Forest Campground, "The camp sites are spaced out a good amount so each site has good privacy. Each site has a fire pit, a grill, and two tables with a decent amount of space for tents."

Renovated facilities: Updated bathhouses improve comfort at several campgrounds. Susquehannock State Park campers mention "The bathhouses are rebuilt recently and are very nice" and "Potable water is available in several places on each loop."

Mini cabins for transitioning campers: For those new to tent camping, Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offers alternatives. "The best part of this campground are the neat mini cabins. Small one room cabins that have electricity and heat. They are a nice touch for those that want to camp, but not completely 'rough it.'"

Picnic amenities: Many sites include tables and cooking areas. At Blackbird State Forest, "Each campsite features a picnic table or two, and a fire pit, plus one bundle of firewood."

    What you should know

Weather vulnerability: Low-elevation sites throughout the region face drainage issues. At Patapsco Valley, a camper noted that "when it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm."

Crushed stone tent pads: Tent setup requires adaptation at some parks. Be prepared with "extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent to the ground" as standard tent stakes may not work effectively on these surfaces.

Boat access only camping: Some of the most secluded camping near Sparrows Point requires water transport. Hart-Miller Island State Park is only accessible by boat and offers primitive tent camping with vault toilets but no showers from May through September.

Seasonal closures: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Most established campgrounds close between late October and early April, with some operating seasonally from March/April through October.

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds near campsites: Several parks feature play areas for children. At The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring, group camping is "Very convenient for before or after your time in the largest aerial challenge course in North America."

Nature programming: Educational opportunities exist at several parks. Patapsco Valley State Park features "a sensory trail, nature play space, and a small nature center" that keeps children engaged.

Avoiding peak season crowds: Weekday camping provides better experiences for families. At Sandy Point State Park Youth Group Camping, campers recommend avoiding summer crowds: "The best times to go are winter, spring, and fall" since "The park closes daily very early as it hits capacity" during summer months.

Jellyfish awareness: Water activities require planning around marine life. "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!" at Sandy Point, so plan swimming activities earlier in the season.

    Tips from RVers

Military camping options: Service members can access affordable sites with hookups. The Military Park United States Naval Academy/Annapolis Naval Station Annapolis FamCamp provides "cheap and close to Annapolis" camping with electric and water hookups for eligible military personnel and veterans.

Limited RV accommodations: The region offers few developed RV sites with hookups. Many campgrounds explicitly note they are "not big-rig friendly" and lack amenities like 50-amp service or sewer connections at individual sites.

Narrow access roads: Campground entrances can be challenging for larger vehicles. Multiple reviewers note difficulty navigating to campgrounds, with one mentioning, "Getting in to the park was a little difficult. We missed the entrance and had to turn around."

Check-in time enforcement: Arrival planning is essential. Some parks strictly enforce check-in policies, with one camper noting "This was also the first time we have ever had to wait till exactly 3pm to check in. So if you arrive early expect to wait until 3."
