Louisiana is known as Cajun country, where the land there was formed from sediment washed down by the Mississippi River, forming huge deltas and massive areas of coastal marsh and bayous with alligators and tree frogs and trees lined with spanish moss. But it’s not all wetlands and marshes. Enjoy the best of coastal camping in Louisiana’s beachside community of Grand Isle. Located where Highway 1 meets the Gulf of Mexico, it’s the closest Louisiana beach from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, making these destinations a convenient day trip while you’re camping. 


Grand Isle is, in fact, an island and a town, with small, locally-owned shops and a state park just made for camping. With 63 sites available, Grand Isle State Park is a great place to camp on the beach and cook the seafood you just caught during July’s Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, an event that brings together the best saltwater fishermen in the world. Or, if you like bird watching, the Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival offers plenty of opportunities to see a myriad of bird species return home from South America. Of course, there’s plenty of swimming, hiking, crabbing and boating in Grand Isle as well. 


Another great place for camping in Louisiana is Tunica Hills, which belongs to the Bluff Hills portion of the Mississippi Valley Loess Plains and extends from the Natchez, Mississippi area to St. Francisville, Louisiana. Managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Tunica Hills Wildlife Area is northwest of St. Francisville and covers more than 5,900 acres of rolling hills and scenic beauty.


Remember when I talked about the wetland and marshes? Tunica Hills isn’t anything like that; in fact, it’s unlike any other area in Louisiana. In Tunica Hills, you’ll find springs and waterfalls, rugged terrain, cliffs 90 feet high, deep gorges and lush, diverse plant life and animals you won’t find anywhere else in the state.  


And while Tunica Hills is known for hunting, a variety of other activities offer campers plenty to do such as horseback riding, hiking, ATV riding and sightseeing. And if you’re a birding enthusiast, then you’ve hit the jackpot because rare birds such as the Coopers hawk and worm-eating warbler live within the thick forests there. It’s no wonder John James Audubon was inspired to paint his famous bird series there in the early 1800s.

Located on a peninsula on Caney Lake, Jimmie Davis State Park is the perfect location for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy nature. Caney Lake is an ideal freshwater fishing spot that features two boat launches and a fishing pier. The lake is surrounded by pine and hardwood forests that are home to a variety of birds and wildlife - don't forget your binoculars for some prime birdwatching! For those traveling with kids, the park also offers a playground to keep the little ones busy. After enjoying the park, cozy up in your Tentrr site and enjoy the gorgeous scenery! 

This campsite is equipped with a pre-set sturdy canvas tent on it's own wooden deck platform. The tent is furnished with a queen-size memory foam mattress, side tables, and a propane tent heater. A picnic table, fire pit with a grill, a solar shower, and portable camp loo are also provided, and campers are able to use the park's restroom facilities as well. There is an additional pop up tent provided for extra guests, but you will have to bring your own air mattresses/sleeping pads for this tent. Be sure to bring your own food, firewood and bedding. There is no electricity available at your Tentrr site. Anything you pack in, you must pack out. Gum Springs Recreation Complex exhibits recreation design and construction from the Civilian Conservation Corps era of the 1930's. Cloud Crossing Campground is a beautiful bottomland area timbered with large hardwoods and pines that is directly adjacent to Saline Bayou National Wild and Scenic River. The terrain is flat with brushy areas that provide seclusion for some camping sites. Cloud Crossing is an ideal put-in/take-out point for boating or canoeing on Saline Bayou. Visitors to the campground will find picnicking units, a pavilion with barbecue pit, shaded campsites with grill/fire rings, lantern hooks, and tables, trash containers, and restrooms. A launch ramp suitable for small trailered boats and other small watercraft is available.

Located on a peninsula on Caney Lake, Jimmie Davis State Park offers two boat launches and a fishing pier that cater to the outdoors enthusiast looking for a prime freshwater fishing spot. Waterskiing is another way to enjoy the clear waters of the lake, which was created by damming Caney Creek in 1986. Don't forget to look back at the lakeshore to appreciate the beautiful mixed pine and hardwood forest surrounding the lake and the birds and animals that make the forest their home. To ensure that there's never a dull moment, the park also has a playground for the kids after a day on the lake. Cyclists will enjoy the park as a starting point for biking treks through the hills of North Louisiana, and nature lovers are invited to discover the beauty of the wooded land and lakefront. Bring your binoculars to get a closer look at the wide variety of birds that live in or pass through the area. After a day of fishing and exploring the park, stay the night in a cabin...or bring the extended family and sleepover in a lodge. For large groups, a group camp – including four dormitories and a dining hall – is available, with its own playground and fishing pier. RV campers have several scenic sites to choose from, for a closer visit with nature. Opened in the fall of 1996, Jimmie Davis State Park was originally named Caney Creek Lake State Park. The 2003 Louisiana State Legislature approved renaming the park in honor of two-term Governor Jimmie H. Davis, who served from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964.

The Saddle Bayou Camp is a very primitive camping experience in a bottomland hardwood setting. Nearby National Catahoula Wildlife Management Preserve make the Saddle Bayou a popular camping area during hunting season.

Whether you're just a hundred miles from home or traveling across the country, you won't find a more comfortable or convenient Vineyard stay than Landry Vineyards in West Monroe to call home for a night or two. Located within walking distance of vines and Landry Vineyards tasting room, this hidden gem is a haven of relaxation you're not likely to forget anytime soon. The RV sites sit on a 30-acre site with two cottages that overlook the vineyards.

DYRT BOOKING: If you are trying to book and the Dyrt will not let you, it is because THEY require a 24 hour advanced booking notice. If you are having issues booking, please feel free to call us during business hours 11-5:30, Monday - Saturday and we can block a site for you if is available. 318-557-9050 You DO NOT have to join the Dyrt to book a site.

There is a walking trail in the woods or venture into the vineyards to view the grapevines and grapes. At certain times of the year, you can see some wildlife (deer, rabbits) and pick blackberries.

Sites #1-4 are NOT pull through. These sites have water, electric and sewer. These sites were designed for Motor Homes but are always being rented by SMALL 5th wheels and SMALL campers. If you have a 5th wheel or camper you will have to back in and run your electric and water hose under your camper (backing in and running the water hose and electric under the camper has not been an issue for most campers). If you do pull in, you will not be able to unhook your camper and move your vehicle, you will have to back up when leaving.

Sites #5-8 ARE PULL THROUGH with electric and water. NO sewer. Ideal for LARGE: 5th wheels, motor homes and campers.
