Winter camping: Most area campgrounds remain open year-round with reduced services. "The bathrooms and office are close during winter season. Roads and camp spots in good condition. We had a peaceful and quiet night," reports Ed G. about winter camping at Rocky Cove.

Spacious campsites: Rocky Cove Campground offers concrete pad sites with good separation. "The sites are small, and for the summer, don't stay in site #118 (a lakeside site), as it has no protection from the sun. The sun sets across the lake and although the view is great, the sun bakes the campsite from morning until 9 pm," advises Bruce.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain consistent cleanliness standards. "We camp here quite often. I like that we can take our fur babies. It's quiet even if there are a lot of campers. People are polite and respectful. The area is always so clean," says bev about Lonesome Point Campground.

Marina restaurant: The on-site dining option receives consistent praise. "The on-site restaurant is a nice perk when you simply don't want to cook. Small lake, but everything is clean and well maintained," notes Scott G. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seasonally.

Quiet atmosphere: Most campers report peaceful conditions even during busy periods. "Great primitive spot near the front with no electric but water within walking distance. Remote and lovely," says Jeremy G. about Lonesome Point Campground.

What you should know

Bathroom access varies: Not all campgrounds have on-site restroom facilities. Bruce explains about Rocky Cove: "The odd thing about the campground is that there is no bathroom or showers. At all. You have to go to the next campground over, Oak Point. Not convenient."

Tick activity: Heavy tick populations affect all camping areas, especially during warmer months. "Lots of ticks. Good clean campground. Bathroom. Bison roam the park. Ticks also roam the park," warns I W. about Prairie State Park. Permethrin-treated clothing and thorough tick checks are essential.

Primitive options available: Gunn Park offers basic camping at lower cost. "This place is a small park that has lots of hiking trails it is five dollars for tents $10 for RVs with electric the bathrooms are Porta potty but for five dollars you can fish," explains Jason T.

Limited cell service: Coverage varies significantly between campgrounds. Signal is generally strongest at campgrounds closest to Fort Scott and weakest at Prairie State Park and more remote camping areas.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access: Crawford State Park maintains a swimming beach with nearby playground. "We have stayed here twice now, both times it was amazing. The on-site restaurant is a nice perk when you simply don't want to cook," notes Scott G. The beach area includes designated swimming zones and picnic facilities.

Wildlife viewing: Structured wildlife viewing opportunities are available for children. "Prairie state park isn't very large but it is nice to see somewhere dedicated to preserving the native grassland that the Midwest used to be covered with," says Luke B. The nature center offers educational displays.

Cabin options: Crossroads RVs and Cabins provides alternative accommodations. "I stayed in one of the airbnb cabins this past summer and it was super comfortable. Everything I needed for a great stay. Awesome managers and such a peaceful surrounding," reports Ryan H.

Weather preparation: Summer heat often exceeds 90°F with high humidity. Spring and fall camping offers more moderate temperatures but increased precipitation risk. Many campsites lack adequate shade, so portable shade structures are recommended.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose sites based on seasonal conditions. "Sites are not level and need either more gravel or concrete. Most of the sites are 30 amp and no dump station. Water and electric only," advises Neil S. about Gunn Park.

Alternative parking: Bourbon County Fairgrounds Campground offers convenient RV parking. "We were guided to a large grass area and backed in next to an electric panel with multiple outlets. The 30amp worked well and we only had one other camper while we were there," says Rick G. The location provides good access to Fort Scott.

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds offer complete RV services. "We stayed in late June in the Rocky Cove Campground on the lake. The lake itself is dotted with campgrounds. Rocky Cove has concrete pad sites, nice and level, both on and away from the lake," reports Bruce.

Seasonal closures: Winter camping requires preparation for limited services. Many water spigots are shut off during freezing months, though electricity remains available at most developed sites.
