Several RV parks serve the Palatine area with varied amenities and site configurations. Camp Reinberg offers 5 RV sites with electric hookups and paved concrete pads at two locations, while the remaining sites feature gravel surfaces. Paul Wolff Campground in Burnidge Forest Preserve provides electric and water hookups on paved sites with fire rings. Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort accommodates larger vehicles with big-rig friendly sites and full hookups including 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort features RV sites with concrete pads, though spacing between units can be limited. "The park has electric and water hook ups at all RV sites. Additionally the spots are paved and have nice fire ring area."

Seasonal availability varies among these campgrounds, with some like Lehmans Lakeside and Sycamore RV Resort operating year-round while others maintain limited seasons. Most parks require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends when Chicago-area residents seek nearby getaways. Pull-through sites are available at several locations but may be limited in number. Dump stations are present at most facilities, though the NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground's dump station is reportedly located "about a mile down the road" from the camping area. Pet policies generally allow dogs with appropriate restrictions, and several parks offer 50-amp service suitable for larger motorhomes with multiple appliances. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region due to proximity to Chicago's metropolitan infrastructure.

      Blackwell Family Campground

      Great Stay

Blackwell has clean bathrooms, offers hiking trails, boating (kayak rentals) or bring your own, fishing, archery, cycling. The gate locks at 7pm but you just call the night guard and he will let you in. They’re only open on Friday, Saturday and holidays. Would definitely stay again. Be aware Winfield Road has a lot of traffic so sites further away from that road are best. Heard coyotes about 3 am both mornings. Rangers were exceptional.

      Rolling Oaks Campground

Old-School Camping with a Whole Lot of Personality

Rolling Oaks is one of those wonderfully old-school Midwestern campgrounds that feels less like an RV resort and more like a little summer community that has been evolving for generations out here in the rich corn patches of central IL. Family-run since 1969, the sprawling, shady property sits along the Fox River with its very own lake and a decidedly RV-centric personality, where curb appeal is just as important (if not more) than the actual mobile confines people are living in. A substantial portion of the campground is occupied by long-term and seasonal residents, complete with patios, sheds and occasionally elaborate outdoor entertaining spaces, which gives Rolling Oaks an unusual neighborhood feel rather than the transient atmosphere of most CGs.

While my earlier review goes into considerably more detail, I thought I’d revisit this campground with a quick topline of HIGHS and LOWS along with a fresh batch of photos.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Water is the star here, with a swimming lake, pool and direct access to the Fox River making this particularly appealing if you bring kayaks, canoes or tubes; (2) Plenty of shade and a mixture of full-hookup, partial-hookup and pull-through RV sites plus tent camping accommodate just about every style of camper; (3) Playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoes and a game room give kids plenty to do without leaving the property; (4) Summer weekends have an almost throwback campground-community atmosphere with dancing, cart rides, farmers’ markets, spaghetti dinners, corn boils and pig roasts; and (5) Being only a few miles from the village of Sandwich makes supplies easy while putting you in prime position for the enormously popular Sandwich Fair (if you manage to time your stay here to coincide with this annual attraction).

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The large population of seasonal and long-term campers means portions of Rolling Oaks can feel more like a permanent RV neighborhood than a campground; (2) All that community activity means summer weekends aren't exactly designed for campers seeking solitude and P&Q; and (3) The CGs sprawling layout means the experience can vary considerably depending upon where you land with front sections feel busier and more transient, while areas farther back become increasingly more residential.

Insider’s Tip: For the best balance of scenery, shade and quiet, head toward the far side of the lake, away from the busiest weekend activity. And if you're thinking of bringing a kayak or canoe, definitely bring it as direct Fox River access is one of Rolling Oaks' biggest advantages.

      Happy Camping!

Prairie View — Chain O' Lakes State Park

      A lot to do.

There’s a lot of things to do out here. We did some hiking with our boy. The site we were at was maintained. It’s a nice place to go camping.

Honeysuckle Hollow — Chain O' Lakes State Park

Lively Little Campground Beside Turner Lake

There’s something wonderfully EZ about camping where the kids can wander down toward the water and suddenly the whole weekend seems to slow down ... and that’s the entire charm of Honeysuckle Hollow. Here at Chain O’Lakes State Park, Honeysuckle Hollow is the largest and most wide open of the park’s camping areas, with electric sites geared particularly well toward RV families, although the tradeoff is noticeably less shade and almost zero privacy between nearly every campsite, compared with neighboring Fox Den, which offers up much more seclusion and shade. The greatest asset here is undoubtedly the direct access to Turner Lake (although you could also have direct access over at Turner Lake South), giving families an EZ place to fish, paddle or simply explore the shoreline, while electric hookups, picnic tables, grills and a nearby restroom/shower building keep the actual camping comfortably simple. We especially loved those unhurried moments when the boys could wander toward the lake while dinner was getting started and everyone seemed perfectly happy just being outside together. The shower facility here is convenient, although we found it just slightly more dilapidated conditions than the bathhouse located closer to Fox Den. From what we saw, I’d choose one of the better-spaced sites toward the Turner Lake side of the campground, where EZ water access helps compensate for Honeysuckle’s limited privacy. I’d recommend Honeysuckle for families who value electricity, lake access and a lively campground atmosphere, particularly if having Turner Lake practically in your backyard matters more than having your neighbors hidden behind the trees.  One point to note is that the pier was in an advanced state of disrepair and so we were not able to fully maximize this particular amenity - so if accessing Turner Lake is important to you and your family, we would recommend calling ahead to verify the condition of the pier.

      Cross country travelers

Last minute online reservation...They only have. 4 or 5 RV sites...full hook ups...about $60+-...right near gas pumps but any noise did not bother us weary travelers...Only downside was showers were not included....For the price certainly an included shower should be part of the deal...easy check in and check out.,..We used the Love's site due to its location to visit family and the fact that electric was available...We have medical equipment that requires a recharge at night plus it's just nice to have the AC if needed.

Adeline Jay-Geo Karis Illinois Beach State Park

      Simple and local

Simple campsite. We should have brought some leveling blocks, But otherwise my wife and I enjoyed the site for our rental RV. Short 10 minute walk to Lake Michigan. The camp store is fairly robust with friendly people working there. I appreciate that there are 2 lanes for dump/fill stations. My wife and I would absolutely stay here again.

      Escape to Nature

      Simply Lovely

We had a truly enjoyable stay and would’ve stayed an extra day if our travel schedule would’ve allowed. David was a wonderful host. Greeted us with a smile and escorted us to our site. We had our choice of 2 spots, both lovely. Picnic table and plenty of FREE firewood to keep us cozy. Wild turkeys roamed the grounds as well as the friendly ducks. All in all, a very peaceful evening and a special place.

      Thousand Trails Pine Country

      A Nice, Quiet RV Park

Stayed with Thousand Trails. It's mostly an annual park, but they've got about 20 TT sites. They've got a clean pool, good size. And a clubhouse that's open til 9pm. Laundry & trash dumpsters nearby. Full hook ups. We enjoyed our stay.

Teal Bay Campground - Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area

The Family-Friendly Heart of Shabbona Lake

Canvasback Cove quickly felt like the liveliest corner of Shabbona Lake State Park, and it's EZ to see why so many families gravitate here. While one of three campgrounds within the park, Canvasback Cove sits closest to the playground, camp store, boat launch, fishing pond and lakeshore, making it wonderfully convenient for families with younger children who love having something to explore just a short walk from their campsite. The campsites offer electric and water hookups, picnic tables and fire rings, while the surrounding prairie, woodlands and sparkling lake create a peaceful backdrop that somehow balances activity with nature. One of my favorite memories was watching children race from the playground to the fishing pond with fishing poles nearly as tall as they were before proudly returning to camp to tell everyone about 'the one that almost got away.' Some campgrounds are designed around campsites; this one feels designed around childhood. From what we saw, lakefront Sites 117 and 125 are especially desirable thanks to their beautiful water views, while families wanting to stay close to the playground, camp store and boat launch will appreciate the heart of Canvasback Cove. We would absolutely recommend this campground for families because of its kid-friendly layout, outstanding park amenities and the countless opportunities to spend the day outdoors together.

    Guide to Palatine

Palatine area campgrounds offer RV sites with varying amenities within 30-45 minutes of downtown Chicago. Most campgrounds in this region experience seasonal closures during winter months, though a few remain open year-round. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer weekends when sites fill quickly.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Sycamore RV Resort features two fishing ponds that are well-maintained and stocked. "Great fishing and nice beach for swimming. Very nice shower/laundry house," reports Ryan B. The ponds are catch-and-release, though water levels can fluctuate with seasonal conditions.

Riverfront relaxation: At Fox Bluff Cottages & RV, campers enjoy multiple water features. "There's a gorgeous Creek, a lovely small lake and I really enjoy the walking trails," writes Gina H. The property offers river views and walking paths suitable for morning or evening strolls.

Water recreation: Several campgrounds near Palatine provide swimming areas during summer months. "The lake is natural and kept free of litter and garbage," notes Ron R. about Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort. Beach areas typically open Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Many RV sites near Palatine, Illinois maintain high cleanliness standards. "Clean campsite, clean showers & bathrooms!" reports Jeana K. about Hollywood Casino Hotel & RV Resort. Most campgrounds offer regularly cleaned restrooms and shower houses.

Community atmosphere: Seasonal campers create welcoming environments at many locations. "Everyone waves and speaks to you when they see you. When we first arrived, neighbors came from all over to help me set up things," writes Semaj C. about Northwoods RV Resort. Many campers return annually to the same sites.

Convenient access: Campgrounds position themselves strategically for easy access. "Convenient - right off the highway. Late checkin and easy communication," notes Jennie about Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort. Most campgrounds provide after-hours check-in procedures for late arrivals.

    What you should know

Variable site conditions: Surface types differ across campgrounds. "We had a back in site, easy access and site had plenty of room on each side," notes Ron D. about Sycamore RV Resort. Some campgrounds offer concrete pads while others feature gravel or grass sites.

Highway noise: Several campgrounds experience road noise due to proximity to major highways. "The only down fall is the constant ambient sounds of highway traffic which is about 1/2 mile away from route 90," explains Ron R. about Lehmans Lakeside RV Resort.

Limited tent camping: Most facilities near Palatine primarily serve RVs. "No tent camping allowed but pop up trailers on up are welcome," explains Phillip T. about Sycamore RV Resort. Tent campers should call ahead to confirm availability before planning their trip.

    Tips for camping with families

Pool considerations: When planning summer visits to Northwoods RV Resort, contact management in advance about pool heating.
