    Larry & Penny Thompson Park

Quiet and Peaceful Campground, trees, greenery and option for long term

This is a very nice campground which is part of the Miami-Dade County park system.  It is close to the Encore Everglades park (about 4 miles) so we stayed here after we departed.  The campground is divided into pods and each pod has about 15 or so sites.  We were in pod 4 site 20 (420 lol).  We booked this camp with the intent to stay for a month or longer as my husband had an opportunity to Captain boats in Miami.

The park was very quiet.  Most of the campers were retirees, a few families with kids, but we were there in early January.  The grounds are nicely maintained with lots of places to walk and open space with trees.  They don't allow dogs off-leash and although it is adjacent to the rest of the Larry & Penny park, dogs are not even allowed in the main park, at all.  We did however find a few dog parks within four miles or so which were nice.

They have a very nice pool which was open daily Wed- Sunday 11am - 5pm.  It was raining and rather dreary during our stay so we didn't use the pool.  They have a nice Clubhouse and it looked okay with tables, chairs, books, puzzles, but again very quiet.  Not many activities except for a few and we didn't stay long enough to participate.  After a week, we decided to make moves back home to Lake Tahoe.  It was unseasonably cold, raining so no boat work and not an ideal spot for the dogs.  They don't have WiFi and since we were planning a longer stay, purchased the Starlink system since I work remote during the winter.  Starlink worked great, but costs $500+ to get started and then $120 or so a month.  If you are looking for an affordable long term/monthly stay, it is great.  The rates were $850 a month for full hook-ups.  They had last minute space available, too.

If you are in the area, check out the Miami Zoo.  We were there when they had the "Zoo Lights" a super fun evening event.  They have other events at the Zoo and lots to do nearby.  You are closer to town than Everglades Encore, but still close to the agricultural area.  I recommend but not as fun or as many activities as some other places.

RV Parks have uped their game!

Miami Everglades RV Resort is in the Miami area but it doesn't feel like Miami at all. They have a really nice big pool, shuffleboard, putt putt golf, arcade and walking trail. It's off the beaten path but worth the drive. The front office staff was so helpful. We arrived after an afternoon storm had blown their power. They still checked us in with now problem. We stopped here for 2 nights while exploring The Everglades on our way to Key West. Close to Miami Everglades is a fruit stand called Robert Is Here. Don't miss it!

    Hidden Gem

Worst part first. If your looking for the ultimate location, keep looking. My wife’s mom lives right around the corner otherwise we may not have even considered Aztec.

However, this place spoiled us, it’s one of the nicest RV resorts I’ve ever seen, the lots were spacious and incredibly well maintained. I believe all the lots are privately owned or st least for sale so you are renting someone’s spot. Ours happened to have a massive tiki hut.

In terms of common amenities they are all in one central spot, they had two very nice pools, an area for hanging out under tables and tikis. The gym, library and bar were not open #COVID. They also pick up your trash every morning which is awesome. They “prefer” newer RVs and only allow class A.

If your looking for a place where you are self contained in a beautiful spot, this is worth looking at.

    Just what we needed

Myself, my husband, and our 2 year old son recently started camping as a family. We originally chose Miami Everglades RV Resort as a site to test our new equipment. It is close to home, so we figured if something went wrong, we’d just pack up and come home. Much to our surprise, this site is extremely nice! It is very clean, upkept well, and all staff were extremely helpful. We were originally assigned a campsite right next to another group who was taking up a lot of space so the office staff graciously worked with us and let us choose our own site. Even though this was a “test site” for us, our experience was so good and so relaxing that we will be back!

    The Harbers

The staff has always been INCREDIBLY RUDE, except for Ferni and Crystal who left due to the toxic environment. Hot tub is broken CONSTANTLY. They almost impounded our travel trailer claiming we abandoned it there, even though they were getting paid $1,000 a month for us to have it there. They took payment from someone who used a credit card of mine who is not an authorized user. They should not have been able to charge me for the last month that we had to pay in full even though we were there only half. Now I have to fight to get that money returned to me and from past experience, this will be ugly. The maintenance man is known to cuss people out and for being drunk. Not worth the money nor the unpleasant atmosphere. Lake Okochobee is more than half of the price and everyone there is so friendly!! I even got a trailer warming gift from my neighbor. Everyone came out to welcome me. Nice!! What a difference!! Thank you Aruba Rv resort for being so friendly and economical and right on the water and having a pool and restaurant.

    Not for tent camping

Considered purely as a campground, this place was a big disappointment. It's basically an RV park, and a mediocre one at that. The spaces are tight and close together. You get a gravel pad with little to no shade or privacy, an old picnic table in one corner, and... that's about it. Full hookup, but not terribly useful to me as a tent camper.

I had much higher expectations for this place, given the reviews. I thought I had lucked out when I showed up without a reservation and they told me there had been a cancellation so yes, there was a site available (so, it was booked almost solid on a Monday night in August). But the fee was sky high for what I got. Haven't been this let down by a campground all summer.

The only redeeming qualities from my perspective were the nice bathrooms and the walking trails. Otherwise, the rest of the park was in sorry shape as well. Bathrooms closed, playground closed, boardwalk closed. Wouldn't recommend this campground unless you're mainly there to go snorkeling or to take a glass bottom boat tour.

    Gated for safety

This place has seen better days and the hook ups are not in the best locations. We were there during the pandemic and many of the Canadian regulars were not there. If you get a site along the fence in back, be prepared for neighbors noise that the RV park cannot control. Barking dogs and loud music, etc.

Ok state park sites not on the water

We stay a night here and there to break up the drive before heading south. The campground has tight spots hardly any privacy but has full hook up. Some sites back up to an area when the tide comes in it has a marsh behind the campers which can attract mosquitos and has a marsh smell so we camp on the other side of the street. You can drive to the beach in the park and snorkel out to a canon (a replica) there’s a big anchor and reef fish. Take the snorkel trip out to the reefs they are nice and one has a statue Christ of the deep.
Plenty to do around the park , kayak, swim, glass bottom boat tour and more.

    Embassy RV Park

    Drive-By RV Parking Lot

Look, if you find yourself stuck in southern Florida, fleeing the traffic and mayhem of Miami or crossing the 6 hour mark, having departed Key West, then this layover in Hallandale Beach – which I must admit, has some pretty amazing beachheads with which to plant an umbrella and throw down a few towels to enjoy the best of what southern Florida has to offer – might be a terribly easy spot to rest your weary head. Located conveniently about 2 minutes off of I95, you’ll be able to reach the concrete campground that is Embassy RV Park and which will have a slab of concrete that it will gladly rent you for the night (or a week, month or longer if need be). There’s all the typical hook-ups from water, electric and sewage, a few scattered (albeit, ill-maintained and not terribly clean) bath houses / restrooms. You won’t find much in the way of community amenities like picnic tables or grills, so be sure to bring or unpack your own. While there’s not a lot in and around this concrete jungle variety RV Park apart from strip mall store-front shopping and fast food chains to dine at, you’ll have to head a decent ways to escape the crowds and overall busy traffic of the area. Net-net, if you’re in a fix for the night, then park here late and leave early in order to get to your destination where you can enjoy a great time that is likely the main reason why you are out camping or RV’ing in the first place, right?

    Happy Camping!

Not so much camping as much as a place you can pay to pitch a tent for a night if you need to in a pinch. Basically staying in an RV park near the water.

    Great Value

The staff wears great! Very helpful and quick to fix any issue. Our electric did not work at our site so we moved. They had someone out the next morning to fix it. Very well lit at night with security. The RV park is located in the back of the county park, so there is plenty to do: water park, outdoor gym and regular play areas for kids. This would be a great spot for a family. Everything is paved with a concrete pad with a picnic table and a charcoal grill available per site. Very spacious and I cannot express how clean. Laundry on site always a plus.

    Stuck Without Options!

3 campers and two RVs crammed into overflow. NO full hookups as indicated over the phone. Showers NOT in the “bath house” adjacent to these crummy sites. The dumpsite is between the office and the fence. This requires you to back into position or drive down a narrow path and make 3 tight turns. Florida has NO dump sites at rest or service areas! What????

    RV Park in a Park

Stayed here over a holiday weekend and enjoyed it, roads getting in the RV park are good but watch out for branches with big units outside the park to the north. Train tracks behind it and highway is not far so it's kinda loud at times. Great Park with big lake. Had good power, good water pressure and cable but didn't use it. All paved or concrete. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. Staff was great from the office to the park. Busy walking path nearby so lots to see going on. Was very surprised to have very fast wifi. I would stay here again.

    Larry & Penny Thompson Park

    Surprisingly pretty Park

This is city owned and operated Park/Campground. This fact is significant. It is very pretty with lots of mature shade trees. The RV's are assigned space around several pods. Each pod has its own bathhouse with laundry facilities. There are pull through spots for the big motorhomes and spots reserved for the handicapped. The bathhouses for the RV's were in good shape and well maintained. The bathhouse for the tenters not so much. The bathhouse for the RV's is not very far to walk which I would recommend.

The tent area is off to one side and well shaded by mature trees. It's an area rather than sites. You pick your spot, put up a tent and place a large numbered sign by your area and you've got your spot. While there isn't any electric to plug into at the tent sites, water is provided interspersed throughout the area. Picnic tables and barbecue grills are also provided throughout.

There is a great fire ring with benches for bonfires and a great Beach volleyball court. The pool is clean and guarded by life guards. There is a lounge where you have access to WiFi and plus to charge your phones. The RVs have WiFi around their pods.

Tenters can stay for a Max of 7 nights while RV's can stay for 180. Tenters can only pay for 3 nights at once before returning to re-up. No such rule for RVs. There is a kind of second class feel to the tenters but if you overlook that (I recommend you do) you will have a great time. Staff is very nice and the park is clean.
