Renowned for being the country’s first undersea park, John Pennekamp camping encompasses an impressive 70 nautical square miles. While many visitors view the park’s colorful coral reefs and teeming marine life on a glass-bottom boat tour, one can get a closer look by scuba diving or snorkeling. Not the best not the worst. Totally does the job and has all the amenities. Just not our vibe. Sites were all on grass and after a couple of weeks camping just the south I sure appreciate some gravel or sand. All the things live in grass. Pool.. looked nice but it was locked. Another one where the offices closes at 5.. most seem to be open until 7-8pm my favorite was key west open til 10pm! Just nice to have someone to communicate with - were low maintenance - or some signage describing how to utilize things if the office is closed. Bathrooms clean & with AC, nice park, courts to play sports but not sure if any equipment available. Clubhouse was unlocked we played pool while we waited for an Uber to the baseball game.

This is a very nice campground which is part of the Miami-Dade County park system. It is close to the Encore Everglades park (about 4 miles) so we stayed here after we departed. The campground is divided into pods and each pod has about 15 or so sites. We were in pod 4 site 20 (420 lol). We booked this camp with the intent to stay for a month or longer as my husband had an opportunity to Captain boats in Miami.
The park was very quiet. Most of the campers were retirees, a few families with kids, but we were there in early January. The grounds are nicely maintained with lots of places to walk and open space with trees. They don't allow dogs off-leash and although it is adjacent to the rest of the Larry & Penny park, dogs are not even allowed in the main park, at all. We did however find a few dog parks within four miles or so which were nice.
They have a very nice pool which was open daily Wed- Sunday 11am - 5pm. It was raining and rather dreary during our stay so we didn't use the pool. They have a nice Clubhouse and it looked okay with tables, chairs, books, puzzles, but again very quiet. Not many activities except for a few and we didn't stay long enough to participate. After a week, we decided to make moves back home to Lake Tahoe. It was unseasonably cold, raining so no boat work and not an ideal spot for the dogs. They don't have WiFi and since we were planning a longer stay, purchased the Starlink system since I work remote during the winter. Starlink worked great, but costs $500+ to get started and then $120 or so a month. If you are looking for an affordable long term/monthly stay, it is great. The rates were $850 a month for full hook-ups. They had last minute space available, too.
If you are in the area, check out the Miami Zoo. We were there when they had the "Zoo Lights" a super fun evening event. They have other events at the Zoo and lots to do nearby. You are closer to town than Everglades Encore, but still close to the agricultural area. I recommend but not as fun or as many activities as some other places.
GuideWe stayed thirteen nights at this park. We really enjoyed the stay and recommend. The campsites are mostly nice. There are a lot of seasonal campers and it seems those sites are nicer. The sites closer to the cabin area are closer together. I wouldn't recommend this campsite for actual campsite, but rather the excellent location and fun activities and amenities of the park.
The park has lots to do and while dated, it is kept in good shape. The pool is lovely with lounge chairs, palm trees and a tropical feel. They have a hot tub, too. Everything clean and had a resort-feel. There are an abundance of activities: pickle ball, shuffleboard, a nice mini-golf course, walking trail, clubhouse, fire pits and large open grassy space.
We have two active dogs and they have a huge field where we were able to run our dogs off-leash and chase the frisbee. I am not sure if it is allowed, but there were others as well so seemed okay. This was a real benefit when camping with pets that like to run.
The park is in a beautiful, agricultural area in the town of Redlands. It is very tropical with farms, nurseries and lots of tropical fruit stands and interesting parks. It feels rural but it is close enough to town to go to the Miami beaches or other activities. If you go, check out all the agricultural farms, the Fruit and Spice stand, the 'Robert is Here' fruit stand and the Knaups Berry Farm for world class cinnamon rolls. The lines were too long for us to wait, but we heard they were the best.
This is one of the most friendly parks I have stayed. We were there on Christmas and New Years and had a total blast. They had music, karaoke, dancing and potluck dinners. The staff was nice too, we met Jason who was super helpful. My friend flew in to visit and she rented one of their deluxe cabins. It was really nice, with a fireplace, fenced patio, loft, kitchen. The entire experience at this resort was enjoyable and felt like being at camp. Highly recommend a visit.
ScoutThe good: The campground is very reasonably priced relative to accommodations in the surrounding area. The facilities are clean and functional. The meh: This is a family campground so you may end up with noisy neighbors (and/or their children). The bad: Code Compliance is strict and will lurk until you leave your site and then stick a nasty-gram to your door about whatever rule you violated. Apparently good tape is in short supply - I found my note under my camper by chance. They placed the note after nightfall.

GuideA little confusing getting here if it’s your first time. GPS will tell you to turn left into the campground when it’s a right at the stop sign from 184th/127th. The staff at the front was super helpful, but we never got info on a wifi code and didn’t notice until it was too late. Super clean bathrooms, which was surprising since we generally don’t expect much when staying in a public park setting. Very quiet and great for what we needed. The sites have enough room. Our site backed up to the bathrooms / laundry but there was enough space between to not be disruptive.

ScoutThe resort itself is large and surrounded by fruit trees, pine trees and other shady trees which offer coverage from the hot sun. Activities only December to April - pool is nice and the staff that directs you to your site is amazing. Otherwise no security after hours which allows rif raf to come in and use the pool, laundry facilities, etc which makes the area unsafe.

We arrived to a warm welcome and headed to site #27. To say these sites are tight is an understatement. You're practically touching your neighbors. We have a 4Runner with RTT and weren't thrilled with the prospects. We get to our site and see that it's missing a picnic table and a big white truck is parked in our spot. We let the office know and they didn't seem surprised saying the tables tend to walk away but they'd get us one and would contact the owner of the truck. No big deal, we'll grab lunch and a couple drinks. So we get a call saying they have a table for us and have contacted the owner of the truck which will be moved ASAP. Perfect!
After lunch we head back and find a table had been brought over and the truck moved, but now there's a black KIA in our spots. Seeing as we were already not thrilled with the cramped confines, we said screw it and decided on a hotel. We thanked the office for the table and getting the truck moved but there was now another vehicle in it's place. They seemed genuinely disappointed and offered to contact the owners. When we told them not to bother, we weren't staying, they didn't even offer a refund. This wasn't a surprise since when we made the phone reservation, they said they didn't offer refunds for cancellations. This should've been a red flag.
We would NOT recommend this place to anyone that would spend any time at their site. There simply isn't any space to get comfortable. The office staff was friendly but it seems like the full-timers and extended stayers feel like they run the place.
LegendGeneral: Small campground (47 sites) in a larger state park with many activities you can participate in.
Site Quality: All sites are level and gravel but are pretty close together with little to no foliage separating them.
Bathhouse: Typical of all the other Florida state parks we have stayed in. Clean with good showers.
Activities/Amenities: This is where this park shines! Swimming, boating, snorkeling. You can rent kayaks or SUPS for a reasonable amount. There are also snorkel tours. There is a food truck, marina, and aquarium. Laundry facilities but one of the two dryers was out of order. Two swimming beaches but we have been to better ones in Florida. Note that alcohol is permitted in your campsite but not in the public areas of the park. Note also that the playground was closed due to safety reasons.
We were lucky to snag a one-night reservation 11 months ago so had to decide which activities to partake in. We chose kayaking and SUP but wish we could have also done a snorkel tour!

GuideWe stayed here for two days on our way North from the Keys. It is a great family style campground close to Miami, Key Biscayne, and the Everglades National Forest. We used this as our landing area to enjoy the local beaches, amenities, and natural sites. There was a pickle ball tournament going on which looked like fun. The pool looked nicely appointed and clean, although, we did not use it. I did feel that the bathrooms close to our site were in need of an upgrade. They rated a low 2 stars. There is a walking/Biking path around the campground perimeter which is actively used.

LegendConsidered purely as a campground, this place was a big disappointment. It's basically an RV park, and a mediocre one at that. The spaces are tight and close together. You get a gravel pad with little to no shade or privacy, an old picnic table in one corner, and... that's about it. Full hookup, but not terribly useful to me as a tent camper.
I had much higher expectations for this place, given the reviews. I thought I had lucked out when I showed up without a reservation and they told me there had been a cancellation so yes, there was a site available (so, it was booked almost solid on a Monday night in August). But the fee was sky high for what I got. Haven't been this let down by a campground all summer.
The only redeeming qualities from my perspective were the nice bathrooms and the walking trails. Otherwise, the rest of the park was in sorry shape as well. Bathrooms closed, playground closed, boardwalk closed. Wouldn't recommend this campground unless you're mainly there to go snorkeling or to take a glass bottom boat tour.
ScoutBeautiful park, just make sure you brinG an itinerary of things to do. Within the park you can rent a boat, fish off land or kayak the lagoon. You can goto the quasi-beach and swim or snorkel—but both get busy. Otherwise, plan to spend money going shopping or eating out locally.

Everything here is setup for convenience and comfort. I booked longer then my original reservation because I simply do not want to leave. 5 STARS !!
ScoutThe staff has always been INCREDIBLY RUDE, except for Ferni and Crystal who left due to the toxic environment. Hot tub is broken CONSTANTLY. They almost impounded our travel trailer claiming we abandoned it there, even though they were getting paid $1,000 a month for us to have it there. They took payment from someone who used a credit card of mine who is not an authorized user. They should not have been able to charge me for the last month that we had to pay in full even though we were there only half. Now I have to fight to get that money returned to me and from past experience, this will be ugly. The maintenance man is known to cuss people out and for being drunk. Not worth the money nor the unpleasant atmosphere. Lake Okochobee is more than half of the price and everyone there is so friendly!! I even got a trailer warming gift from my neighbor. Everyone came out to welcome me. Nice!! What a difference!! Thank you Aruba Rv resort for being so friendly and economical and right on the water and having a pool and restaurant.

GuideThis is all about location. The sites themselves are tight and no view. But the park is pretty. We were there when the weather wasn’t good, so we missed out on boat tours and snorkeling, but still enjoyed the park and the views.
GuideWe stayed here for the night on the way to the keys. Park had good power and water pressure. Showers and bathrooms were clean and nice. Roads were fine for large RV'S. I would stay here again.
