Managed by the Bureau of Land Management within the campsites near BLM Land — Colorado River Valley Field Office, Lyons Gulch Campground & River Access sits directly along the Colorado River and draws a steady mix of rafters, kayakers, and tent campers looking to base themselves on the water. The site is free, which factors heavily into its appeal. A small walk-in area holds roughly five or six individual campsites, most with picnic tables, and the farthest is only about 30 feet from the parking pulloff. A separate level area along the road accommodates RVs, though those vehicles are not permitted in the main parking spots.
River activity runs high here, even on weekdays. Train tracks run along the opposite bank, and traffic noise is part of the experience. Sites sit on sand close to the water, which means wind can pick up, so tent campers should come prepared to stake down. There is no shade at some sites, making midday heat a real factor in summer. Cell coverage is limited or absent depending on your carrier.
A vault toilet is on-site and has generally been reported as clean and stocked. Bears have been spotted in the area, a likely result of food waste left behind by previous visitors, so proper food storage is essential. "Only a few sites and each offers great seclusion right along the river," notes Isabelle K. Nearby, Colorado River Road Dispersed near Lyons Gulch (BLM) provides additional dispersed options for those who arrive and find the sites taken. Lyons Gulch works best for paddlers and river-focused campers who can travel light and don't mind a no-frills setup.
Description
Lyons Gulch is a free BLM site featuring a boat launch, which includes a toilet and five campsites. Campsite #1 can accommodate larger groups. The restroom is closed November 15th to May 15th. Cat holes are not permitted due to the proximity to the river. Do not camp in this location during heavy rains due to mud slides and flooding.
