Camping near Marble, Colorado offers diverse options at elevations between 7,300 and 10,000 feet, with temperatures often dropping below 40°F at night even in summer. The region sits within White River National Forest and experiences frequent afternoon storms during summer months, typically clearing by evening when temperatures cool rapidly.
What to do
Waterfall hunting: 3-mile trek from Avalanche Campground to scenic cascades. "Two waterfalls can be reached from an unmarked trail near the spillway. Look for a parking area big enough for 3-4 cars on the west side of the creek that is formed by runoff from the spillway," explains a camper who visited Lake Irwin nearby.
Mountain biking: Dyke Trail access directly from Lost Lake Campground. "The Dyke Trailhead was right next to our tent. 13+ mile beautiful mountain biking/hiking trail. Definitely suggest going wildflower season," shares a camper who enjoyed the trail accessibility.
Fly fishing: Crystal River spots within walking distance of campsites. "Nestled at the base of towering mountains along the Crystal River this campground is full of beautiful sites... Lots of hiking and fishing nearby," writes a Bogan Flats visitor. Trout fishing improves in late summer when water levels decrease.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing: Dawn and dusk are prime times for deer, elk, and birds. "We had a doe deer and her boyfriend show up before I even got my tent set up and squirrels and chipmunks were everywhere as were the hummingbirds," notes a camper at McClure Campground.
Stargazing: Clear nights reveal exceptional skies due to minimal light pollution. "Wake up and pick a trail, or point towards a road. It is bound to be beautiful! The Camp Host is a delight... and at night - the stars oh how the twinkle! But you will pay a price for these autumn skies. It is cold at Lake Irwin at night," advises a Lake Irwin visitor.
Dispersed options: Forest roads leading to free sites. "We stayed in this area, did not stay in the lost lake camping sites as everything was full but along the road there are loads of places to pull off and camp! Secluded and really a peaceful place!" shares a camper about areas near Lost Lake.
What you should know
Limited connectivity: No cell service for 20+ miles from most campsites. "No cell service anywhere until you get to Carbondale," reports a camper at Redstone Campground. Download maps and information before arrival.
Cold nights year-round: Elevation means freezing temperatures possible even in July. "It did get coooold during early June, bring a good sleeping bag and warm clothes!!" warns a Bogan Flats visitor. Pack extra layers regardless of season.
Road conditions: High clearance needed for some campgrounds. "The road is a bit rough leading up to the campground, but not a problem if you're in anything other than a sedan," notes a Lake Irwin camper. Many forest roads become impassable after rain.
Tips for camping with families
Shallow water play: River spots with gentle flow areas for kids. "Perfect location to visit Marble and Crystal Mill. Also try and get a creekside spot," recommends a visitor to Bogan Flats Campground.
Bear safety education: Bear boxes available at most established sites. "Each site offers a bear box, picnic table, and campfire rings. The vault toilets are kept clean," explains a Bogan Flats camper, highlighting important safety features for families.
Spacious sites: Room for multiple tents at many locations. "We had site #5 and could hear a stream ~100ft away and see the lake on the other side of me," shares a visitor to Lost Lake, describing the generous spacing that works well for family groups.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Bring extra blocks for uneven terrain. "The sites were a bit close together, about half were exposed, no tree coverage, and the other half were provided ample shade with lots of trees," notes a Bogan Flats visitor who had to adjust their setup.
Length restrictions: 25-foot maximum at many forest campgrounds. "These are excellent secluded sites with nice bathrooms. The river runs right along the park. Not very many trails near by, and starts to get cold early because of the valley," reports a camper at Gothic Campground, where larger rigs struggle with access.
Hookup availability: Limited options throughout the region. "One loop has hookups. One doesn't... Hosts were great. We had site #1. Shared site but spacious with great views," shares a Redstone camper, one of the few locations offering electric connections.
