TravelerThe campground sites are a bit slanted and there isn’t much privacy at any of the sites. But the location is nice right next to Idyllwild town. All the sites are mostly in shade among the trees and stay cool in the summer. There are large stall gendered bathrooms with showers and sinks. Seems like a good spot for families. Right next to Idylwild Regional Park.
LegendYou'll be on the dirt roads for a long time to get to this one, not a bad spot during hunting season. This campground has tree and shade but the surrounding area was burnt out and that is when the fees to stay disappeared. Gets used often by OHV folk, there are water storage ponds not far away with goldfish if you lucky enough to find them. Really quite and you won't find a lot of folks using this campground most of the time. Just a few miles past Big Pine Flats.
LegendJust a couple of minutes from Running Springs on the road to the Children's Forest and up to the Keller Peak Fire Lookout. Each Yellow post is a good distance from each other but the road is close, easy to get to for quick forest getaway.
LegendYou will earn this spot as the drive from Hwy 38 is long and rocky. The final road to the spot is a single lane and others wanting to camp there will not know if it is occupied so you may get to meet so new friends. It is up on the ridge some lots of solitude and views.
LegendCougar Buttes is the site of a lot activities like 4x4/Rock Crawling, Trials, Desert Riding and most will camp in the draw that cuts the mountain range in half. There are other cover areas around the buttes to camp in for more privacy as the main area can get crazy with big numbers of "neighbor" (if you like that). You can get in off of Powerline Road the easiest although there are backways through the homes along Old Woman Springs but beware as that way tends to be sandier and have pulled a lot of peeps out. Beautiful rocky terrain with tons of single track for bikes and really challenging roads for jeeps, tons of history also in the area.
LegendSoggy has a long and very rocky road getting into the lakebed area. There are many camping spots all along the shoreline that will accommodate any size rig. From there you can reach all that Johnson Valley has to offer, can get busy but not nearly like Cougar Buttes, Anderson, or Means Lakebed.
